First you need to get comfortable with it which means you have to set your guns at a range that you like to shoot from and then stick to it. I use 425 yds. Next you need to get your stick setup so your nose doesnt bounce when you move the controls even slightly. Once all thats in order you can start thinking about killing.

Join us sick puppies in the training arena sometime. When we go there we generally work on 1v1 and 2v2 in the P51.

Wrong forum bud but ok,

be aggresive,
keep it fast,
use angles not raw turning when slow,
learn your strengths,
set a good convergence 250-275-300
and learn some serious Sa

I advise against staggering your convergence.  I used to do this in AHI with the pony with good success.
The new gunnery model makes a single convergence point much more effective for the six  .50's.

I fly the 51D almost exclusively and have a ton of fun in it.

The P51 is a beautiful machine that combines the best attributes of two other superb planes in the AH2 inventory, the 110G and La7.  As such you must learn to combine the flying styles best suited to these two planes:  HO everything in sight, then run like heck.

Always works for me!!!  :aok

Controlling nose bounce has more to do with E-managment than stik settings!

bigbob, being a fellow CH, ill be more then happy to help you learn about the p51.  i love flyign the p38, but i realy shine in the p51.  just this past wednesday, i got low and slow with a spit 14 and a typhoon and took them into a rolling scissors, which the spit should have won due to better turnign capabilities and climb, but i was full flaps and missing my rudder.  after it was all said and done, i made both of them auger durign the corse of about 7-8 rolling scissor loops.

evenhaim is right tho, you gotta kepe it fast.  she can handle great at low speeds with flaps, but thats soemthign that takes alot of practice and feelign to do.  the first notch flaps come out at 300 mph.  at full flaps and a little manual trim management, i have actualy gotten the pony to turn with and kill a spit 16 before.  the is a plane that takes feelign to get use to.  she may seem a little but cranky at first, but if you rub her the right way, she'll make your dreams come true.  we have squad night tonight, not sur eif its FSO tonight or what, but when i get on we'll both up ponies and ill give ya soem training in it.

Your speed is your "ace in the hole".  Try and keep a higher E state than the enemy cons. This could be through speed or altitude.  Practice slashing attacks.  The enemy will typically see you coming and break but the good maneuverability typically allows you to get a shot as you "slash" by and keep your E.  I have my convergence set between 250 and 300 so these slashing attacks are typically fatal.

You can drop a notch or two of flaps to force overshoot against certain planes at high speed.  You can also settle in on someones 6 with flaps and turn with most planes for a short period.    You can do a hi yo-yo to bleed off speed.  If you don't get the kill quick against good turning planes at low speed then use your speed to dive away or stick with it for fun.  The flaps will keep you in it and other player may be inexperienced.

I equate flying a P51 to a chess game.  The goal is to position yourself for a good slash attack while watching for cons.   The attack is just the final part of the whole exercise.  The Spiy VIII and equivalent is more of a brawler where you can get low and slow and track a con until you get the shot.

Such a wondeful game to have so many choices!  :aok

Venom

P.S. I have the opposite problem.  I'm used to the P51 and have trouble with the P47s so can understand where you are coming from.

Do your lips hurt from blowing your own horn?   :D

while your 2/1 ratio(is that "shine"?)  in the 51D is fine, you actually do better statistically in the 38L, which is a more difficult plane to bring kills home in the MA environment, IMHO.

Bigbob, this thread has some misleading/incomplete info.  There's some good sticks in the TA who would happily show you some of the nuances of the 51.  I think it would be a good idea to go in there.  You'd really pick up some good info from some very fine trainers.

What is wrong with B n Z?  I do it alot, its a valid tactic and works really well.  Heck if you do it right you can drop down below a target's 6 and hide slightly lower and behind in his blind spot as you close then pop up slightly giving him a free ride to the tower. :aok

So is the HO attack. It doesn't make it heroic or fun. The fun part may be subjective though.

The best part about turn fighting a plane that isnt known as a turn fighter, is the fact that you don't turn too much. You play the acceleration card and the climb card. Flat turns suck in this ride. Break and go straight up, fall down on top of your opponent and light em up.

Only thing I can advise is, piss on the flat turn, keep it nose up/nose down/ deflection....yadda yadda yadda...

blow my own horn?  th eonly reason i do better in the 38L is because i fly it alot more often then the P51D.  I wont lie, im not the best in either plane but when i do fly the pony i fly it well.  Hands down it is the only plane that i can muster my best dogfightign skills in.  the 38L comes close, but it has its drawbacks.  If you have ever seen me in a P51D you'll see what i mean.  i've out turned a ki84, made a typh and a spit14 both auger in a rolling scissors manuver, and out scissored a 109 in my P51D.  i may not be the brightest pony pilot out there, but when i am in my element, i realy do shine.

Best tactic for getting better with the P-51 is to find someone better in it who flies like you do to wing with, feed off their table scraps and figure out what they do that would work for you. Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses, what works for someone else could be incompatible with your flying style. To this end, I've been slowly leeching off Fencers P-51 Mojo for about a year now. :)

Also you have to figure out which setup is better for you, everyone is different there too. I now fly the B almost exclusively, even though I started out in the D and took forever to realise I liked the razorback better. Now the B is probably my favorite plane in AH.

Personally I'm a lousy dogfighter but decent shot, so I usually make fast atacks and try to as much damage as I can as quickly as possible (unfortunately, that means I also get close enough to hit falling planes a lot...) and then look for another target. I get a lot of kills clearing tails and tag-teaming larger flights. I wouldn't really call it BnZ, since I'm usually right in the middle of the furball, but I stay fast, avoid turnfights when I can, and try to take them down as quickly and efficiently as possible.

As Duane Beeson so quaintly put it- "...sneak up close behind and hit 'em in the back of the head with a baseball bat."

Well you'll have to let me ride along some time and show me how it's done. I enjoy learning  new stuff.
I'll send a request next time I get a chance when you are on.  My ingame name is:  Steve
