Title: B-25 Mitchell in Fiction
Post by: Shaky on September 23, 2007, 10:15:54 PM
I've been looking for a reference to this book since the B-25 won the contest :lol Its fiction about the genesis of the B-25 gunships and the man who pushed for the concept.

If you like the solid nosed -25, pick this one up! Written by the same author who c0-wrote "SAMURAI!" with Sakai, among many other military fiction and non-fiction books.

WHIP! by Martin Caidin (http://astore.amazon.com/intercomu2-20/detail/039520707X/)

no guppy its all real. caiden was there in his time machine but then biff stole it and he got stuck in the future.

p38s with dead pilots routinely fly back to base 6 hours after they would have no fuel left it was confirmed by eyewitnesses and an unnamed colonel :D

Heh....regardless....its a decent book. Back when I forst read it, it was my first exposure to the idea of stuffing a LOT of weapons into the nose of a bomber.

Wasn't the B-25 used in Catch-22 as well? :)

Yes it was. In fact thats one of the flight movies Ive been wanting to order. That and 12 Oclock High are missing from my collection.

I like the B-25 in the game, and like flying it. But when your sitting in a gunners position? around a runway? When the 25 starts floating in its like goose hunting big Canadian geese intent on lighting 10' from your blind.

You can find it here: http://stage6.divx.com/COMMANDPILOTS-CHANNEL/video/1568126/Twelve-O%5C'clock-High-(public-domain)

Plenty of old war movies at Stage6 (http://stage6.divx.com), look for the "War movies" channel.

Stunt pilot Frank Tallman said that the mass B-25 takeoff for that film was the most dangerous Hollywood stunt in which he ever participated.  His fear was that one of them - and it would only have taken one - would lose an engine.
