Title: Danger on the high seas (vid)
Post by: crockett on September 26, 2007, 11:17:22 PM
Guess the Japanese and North Koreans really don't like each other. This is video of a gunfight between the Japanese Coast Guard and a  North Korean spy trawler.

It's kind of a shame the Japanese just didn't have a bigger gun.

I thought they just needed to hold the trigger down a little longer.

The 50 cal (or whatever that was) seems to have worked out just fine.

Anyone know when that happened?  Any news or more info?

I'm sure Al Gore will make a movie about the danger the Japanese and North Koreans pose to the environment.

BTW, I noticed this has propagated around the internets as a "spy trawler." Not really. These trawlers carry small landing craft that exit through doors on the stern. They're used to smuggle amphetamines into Japan from North Korea, which is always in need of hard currency. The crews scuttle them if caught and commit suicide. This trawler was raised and was matched to satellite images showing it moored previously at a North Korean naval base to show that the smuggling is state-sponsored.

(Cultural note: Amphetamines are the drug of choice in Japan because sometimes 16-hour work days just aren't enough. The business culture requires that no one leave the office before the boss leaves, who doesn't leave before his boss leaves, ad infinitum. Deciding who gets promoted is simple: the last man stranding gets the job.)

I don't think Koreans north or south are especially fond of the Japanese.

Do you have any more info on this bit? I'm interested in reading more about that.

Cool to know more info on it.

Yea I know NK is state sponsoring the drug trade over there, so it makes sense. NK is one of the worst countries on the planet IMHO and their little dictator should be wiped off the face of this Earth.

Everyone loves to say how bad the German death camps were and all  the "never again" BS. Yet our govt and all the rest just sit by as North Korea does the same thing the Germans did.

North Korea runs death camps "right now" that would put the German's ww2 death camps to shame. Yet we make deals with them and call it politics.

You'd be wrong because S. Korean and Japanese both travel extensively back and forth, share music, TV, food and many cultural things. Oh sure, there are some still holding onto the past, like politicians, but most normal people have caught after several generations that war is over. The US Civil War is over too, just in case you thought southerners are not especially fond of northerners.

It was plastered on TV, newspapers and magazines here for quite a while, but I don't know if there was any detailed (English) news coverage outside of Japan.

Here are two small links:

That's sounds like propaganda or hyperbole to sell Google adsense clicks. No doubt the DPRK is a dark place, but the Dear Leader's son is doing what all tyrants have done since the beginning of time - enjoying the good life for himself and his friends, while instilling fear in the masses about an outside enemy by controlling the media and promoting a cult-like idolatry of himself.
