Some of the older members might enjoy this video; a reminder of what sims used to be. Notice how they claim realistic FM in each title.
Out of those titles, I only had my hands on FS4.0 and A10:tank killer.

I've been under the impression that dressing up in a flight suit to play computer sims was a dorky thing to do. I'm sure glad those cool fellows cleared that up for me! :aok
-
Kick-ass....I use to watch that show a lot.
Chuck Yeager's Air Combat - FTW!
-
I fondly remember my first foray into Air Warrior this same year, 1990. Took me a while before I figured out how to turn on the tracers. Flight simmer since 1982. :aok

My very first puter Flying Sim

Brings back memories.
And did ya dig those jet engine sounds?
I was bout having flashbacks.
And hey. you could get a 486 based computer for UNDER $4,000!
-
1988 was my first year on a joystick that was 2 " long, and literally a stick coming out of a very small pad (http://thumbs.ebaystatic.com/pict/1800718277804040_1.jpg)[/b], playing this game:

Kesmai Air Warrior was next, at something like $5.00 an hour until Wife ack killed that....

I remember shelling out the big bucks to upgrade from 16 color CGA to my first VGA card to play F-19!

Yep, 1992..??... $265 for my AST 13" SVGA monitor to go with my newly purchased Packard Bell 386/25 with 1mg ram and 80mg harddrive and a 1200 baud modem. A few months later spent $250 for my Creative CdRom, single speed, with a sound card... and then played Birds of Prey and Chuck Yeager's Flight Sim

I hope puberty took care of that.. :D

I keep hoping someone will craft a modern version of Chuck Yeager's Air Combat. The Col Tomb dogfight was always a favorite, or flying the Mig-21 to intercept.
The custom mission editor was a lot of fun too. You could put your F-4 (or any plane) up against anything you wanted. It was great fun plinking WW2 planes with missiles from the Phantom.

Actually the Sim I miss the most from those early days was Av8b.
You had control of a amphibious task group and flew harriers through a very sweet campaign.
I got into the game a bit later than a lot of you geeks & freaks.
But it was A10 Cuba over Kali that got me hooked on flying vs PEOPLE instead of AI. After that it was all over but the crying when the bills came. :)
-
A 486 for a mere $4K? Now I know why I didn't own a PC back then. That really brings back memories. 1990 doesn't seem so long ago but how dated it is now. I actually had Falcon AT and ATP which I played on my work PC straight off the floppys. That machine didn't even have a mouse. I didn't actualy buy those games. They were copies given to me by a friend. Software piracy! :t I preferred ATP as I felt it was 'realistic'. I actually used to practice instrument approaches on it and NDB holds. Falcon AT was fun but I could never land the F16. So the trick was to turn on the autopilot and shut down the engine. The F16 would fall vertically to the ground exactly on the intersection of the runways without damage.
The first one I bought was Chuck Yeagers Air Combat. Even though I still didn't own a computer and had to play it in work. Great game.

yep.. liked red baron then went to aces over the pacific and aces over europe.. then dos AW and then Dos WB and then AH.
Worse thing was the around $3 an hour thing. Best thing might have been that too tho... people liked to fight when they paid that kind of money.

Oh yeah baby! I remember playing that game for hours each day.

:rofl True! Nowadays its "Run away until I get a better position then come back..."

Not my first, but spent countless hours on that ... chasing pixels I guess, surely remembered more details than that :lol

countless hours on f119sf - wow the memories!

nice memories!
for me aircombat started with my Atari 400 & Sublogics Flightsim II World War I scenery.
Dogfighting WW1 airplanes around a small map, even with mountains
and a river, and a refuel-stations with new ammo!
For todyas eyes it looks horrible, but you can trust me, playing this in the
early '80 was fun, it was the same fun we have with todays flightsimms.

Those folks worked for the Store. They were dressed up to help sell software. I bet it worked too.

Chuck Yeager AFT was fun for a couple of hours but not much use beyond that. I too spent many hours enjoying Chuck Yeager's Air Combat.
I enjoyed all of the Microprose sims, even Acrojet and a bit later Knights of the Sky. F-15, Gunship and F-119 stole my late youth. ;)
Here's another I just couldn't stop playing though it was very repetitious.

F-19, F-15-II and Gunship, then Aces of the Pacific and Aces over Europe.
Why didn't anyone mention Battle Hawks 1942 / Battle of Britain / Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe?
Among jet sims - we played Falcon on XTs in the Uni, head-to-head via null-modem cable, then there was F-22 Retaliator that allowed to play H2H via modem...
I was dreaming about an opportunity to play AoE against human opponents, and then I discovered WarBirds... Some Russian guys flew CK beta, but the connection was absolutely awful back in 1996.

All great time wasters. No doubt they will be reincarnated when the next stage of computer evolution engulfs us.

Having never flown Warbirds... was that THE Wild Bill?
-
Yes.that was wild bill who managed to run WB intothe ground. Gilman is working for the CIA for the last few years after Falcon 4.0 released. State of the art VGA with 33mhz processeor. Imagine what we condiser cutting edge will look like in 25 years.

I think I got my start on the flight simulator path with the F-19. I was about 10 or so old at the time and we set up a "sim pit" with Sasmox and Panzzer with some blankets and other household stuff to make the experience more realistic. We didn't particularly care for the fact that the F-19 was supposed to be single pilot.
I also distictly remember charring the CIA chip (dunno what that is) of an Amiga 500 when we used our home-made cable to connect two Amigas to run Falcon (version 1) head-to-head... We finally managed to get the cable right, but it would have been cheaper to get the "original" cable.... The H2H experience was good, though. Worth every penny.
I started flying online in 2001, when I had 10mbit connection to the 'net. Unfortunately, about 2 weeks after I found AH, I moved to apartment with no internet..

No, "the" wild bill died in 1876,;)

To think that I wasn't even born in the 1990's and they had flight sims by then. amazing!:O

That's the sim I started on as well. I remembering spending hours flying with those graphics, lol, I'd forgotten just how dated they were. Still have the game too, I can't bring myself to get rid of it. :)

I keep all the old computer emulators and roms for an occasional fix of nostalgia.
-
I don't think you can say that and not break the geekometers, even here Iron :lol

Comeon, don't tell me you've never booted up an Atari ST emulator and run Sundog (http://www.atari.st/view.php?id=1696), Carrier Command (http://www.atari.st/view.php?id=266), or Starglider (http://www.atari.st/view.php?id=1651)?

I thought those were free downloads, they aren't free there any more. I'm sure I can find some free ones.
-
Here's a site that'll get you a running ST emulator: http://ahladnik.free.fr/
Roms shouldn't be too hard to find.
-
It's all french! Where do I click??
-
Click the label on the left emulatuers and download winston 4.
There are some games on that site also under jeux.
A lot more can be found here:
http://www.doperoms.com/roms/Atari_St.html?start=50&abc=
F11 and F12 to switch the mouse in and out and to go full screen.
-
You may find an Amiga emulator easier to use. The best which includes legal os roms can be bought here: http://www.amigaforever.com/
A free emulator can be found here: http://www.winuae.net/
You'll need the amiga kickstart roms though to use the free amiga emulator. Goolge shouldn't have much trouble locating them.
Ah, Bard's Tale on the Amiga, loved that game: http://www.rom-world.com/dl.php?name=Amiga&letter=B

I found this snippet from Wikipedia interesting...
In 1995 he founded Interactive Magic which later became iEntertainment Network. He left in 1999 and was subsequently asked to return as CEO in 2002.
Since his return IENT has redone the WarBirds Software, won settlements on their Internet Gaming patent, and developed a Military Consulting Division.
Thought he tried to stake a claim about HTC a while back?

TRS-80!
Back in 1986 Soviet "Radio" magazine issued blueprints and schemes of how to build an "RK-86" personal computer. A TRS-80. Thousands of people have taken their soldering irons and made it. A first personal computer sold in the USSR for public was a BK-001, it appeared in 1987 and cost a 6 month salary of an engineer. Apple-II clone called "Agat" cost 2 times more.
In 1986 I first saw a PDP-9 clone called DVK-1, and then studied for three years at school to become an IBM/360 operator. At that time we played Startrek.
First IBM/PC machines I saw were Bulgarian PC/3270 clones called ESTL (ES-1839), with 5Mb hard drives and 15" CGA monitors (green-monochrome). It was in the Uni in 1989. Kinda hard to imagine a personal machine with 640kb RAM when we studied on ES-1022 (IBM/360 clone) that had 128kb total and handled 20 terminals, while calculating it's main job, with punch-cards and so on :)

This was my first one too. I played it on a Apple IIe with an add on board that raised the total memory to 128k? Maybe it was 64k. Been too long. I ran it off of 5" floppy disk drives. I couldn't afford a hard drive.

The first sim I can remember playing:

Solo Flight on an Atari 800XL.

Heh, mine had a cassette drive..used it on my Atari 800XL also:rolleyes:

My first flight sim was Solo Flight. Had a cool little mail delivery mission thing. Then I got MS FS II and a bunch or them since. Also the Aces over Pac/Europe, among others.
