Title: Spanish Civil War
Post by: Bino on September 28, 2007, 07:27:58 AM
Has any flightsim ever done the Spanish Civil War?  I think it would be interesting to see the aviation side of the Spanish Civil War.  Technology was in transition, from the legacy of the nimble turnfighters of WWI to the E-fighters of WWII.

The planeset might include cool stuff like the Bf-109D, JU-86, I-16 "Rata", FIAT CR.32, etc.

And my Dad would *finally* be able to say that his son is a Republican.  ;)

:lol  I think you may have mixed up American Civil War and Spanish Civil War :)

I think it would be cool to simulate the Spanish Civil War but it would need to be like a CT.  A Spanish CW MA would be the same as what we have now except La's would be 109's.

Ok now what did I miss, where are those E fighters in the MA he is talking about? Afaik I'm one of very very few using E tactics. 99% are spit/la/nik1 dweebs running around with their face in the dirt refusing to gain alt. Then again, I did see a Il-2 at 15k once...

IL2 can get to 15k without the engine coughing and dieing on you?

The planes first - Ratas could be used on the Eastern front, Fiats on the Mediterranean and so on. But I doubt we would be getting a Spanish Civil War arena, but I'm hoping for the planes to build an AvA setup and several SEA matchups around the Spanish Civil War.

And where's Arlo when you need him? :)

Heh :D

I'm not only glad to see this thread. I'm glad to see most in it giving it serious consideration. I live near HT and company now. Perhaps the time for "Operation Bring Scotch To The Big Guy In Person Frequently" has come. :D

Arlo, let me know if your supply of Lagavulin, Balvenie, or Laphroaig runs low.  I'll make a supply drop in a C-47.  ;)

The problem as I see it is that like WWI, the Spanish Civil war enthusiasts make up a very small percentage of the whole. There just isn't enough of them that would stay to make developing it worthwhile.

AH has the potential to do several such arena's. Including the Spanish Civil War, Korea, etc.

The problem is the amount of dev time required to produce the planes needed.
If the HTC crew can ever find a way to shortcut that process, then it would be a viable alternative.  Also as hard as it is to find good data on WWII planes, it has to be tougher to find good data on those even older birds.

And that's exactly what I mean to discover with posts like this: just how many *are* interested in something different.  Maybe you're right that there are too few of us to warrant the allocation of HTC's scant resources.  But, you might be wrong.  With your indulgence, I'll continue to ask for things we don't already have.

I have a question. Since we’re unlikely to see the actual SCW planeset, what current AH2 planeset could you use in a Spanish Civil War scenario?

Interesting question. I think the answer is none - a few of Aces High's aircraft were in service at the time, but they didn't fight in the Spanish Civil War. There's a dead handy list here:
http://www.zi.ku.dk/personal/drnash/model/spain/did.html

It lists the 109E3. Aces High has a 109E4, which had a different canopy, but was very similar. It's amazing how modern-looking the Douglas DC-2 seems in comparison to all the other planes on that page.

IL-2 has the Fiat G-50, and a couple of models of Il-16. I think it has the Heinkel He-59 and He-115, but they are non-playable. It also has a CR-42 and a couple of other biplanes, so you could theoretically mock up a Mock Spanish Civil War Mock-Up with that.

You are a good person. A really good person. Did I say I think you're a good person, yet (enough)? :D

We have the Emil. Do the Mosca (potential use in other arenas). The JU-52 (Others have asked to have it modeled just to have an historical axis transport). Make a bomber variant of it, as well. You have a short list for an arena to test interest right there. :)
