I was gonna post a simple witty remark as "Well, just land on the ground and not on a carrier! :D" (eheheh, I did it!), then something got my attention.
The Forrestal incident: since when EA-3B had missiles? Rear firing missiles? Was that a flare? Or was it another aircraft that accidentally fired?
-
Wasn't that an A-4 Skyhawk that hit hit with the missle? And wasn't it John McCain's plane?
-
it was a missle
-
I'm not an idiot. I know it was a missile.
I'm saying what did the missile hit? Was it indeed an A4 Skyhawk?
-
what it hit i cant tell
-
Ahh...because on the military channel there was a show about J. McCain when his plane got hit on the deck.
-
it might have been his plane
-
It did say...it said he was in it and he took no damage...miracle I guess
-
is that even possible
-
Not really...but he did it...so I guess now it is...:huh
-
Yes, it was his plane. Yes a Skyhawk.
-
That wasn't McCain's plane though he did fly an A-4 also. That was an unguided rocket that went off on a carrier deck and created a large fire that took a long time to get under control.

The film of the Forrestal fire is one of the Navy's most seen training film due to all the mistakes they made in starting the fire, and getting it under control. In the 4 years I served I must have seen that film about a hundred times. It hit home every time I saw it seeing as I was stationed aboard the aircraft carrier "USS Dwight D, Eisenhower" (CVN69) for two and a half of those 4.
We had a hanger deck fire once. The hanger bays are about 3/4's the size of the flight deck, and are separated into three bays by these huge doors that can close in less than a minute. A deck crew was redoing the deck in the forward bay, forward starboard side, an area about 50'x50'. The paint was in 5 gallon pails and they used a 1/2 inch drill with a 3' shaft with a blade on the end to stir the paint.
At any one time there is 50+ people working in the hangers, and another 50+ just hanging around, or using the hanger to get across to the other side of the ship. One of the crew left the drill standing in the paint pail, it fell over, sparked, and ignited the whole area. A fire ball hit the ceiling (3 stories up), before they could get the main doors closed 30 of us had the fire out. I never saw so many fire extinguishers fired off at the same time!!
Minimal damage, and the guys that cleaned up and repainted everything were MUCH more careful. The training was so good that we had the fire out before you "thought" about what to do.
-
Was a Zuni Rocket after someone parked a ground suppport equipment too close, running exhaust set off rocket which slammed into McCain's droptank.
Forrestal is also know as "the forest fire".

Fire at sea ain't no joke. I still remember fire school, 33 years ago. I think they devote a whole week to everybody crew training to the new guys today. Seabees, I did fleet training 1st, then, like Army Engineers, but with the Marines. We did Disaster Recovery training every year with refreasher schools. After my Navy training I am rather paranoid about fire, still.
I think I saw it on the History Channel, the Forrestal incident. The missle was an infrared, heat seeker. For some reason it fired. Missle safety procedures were changed after that. Go do a Google, you will find more than you want to know, I bet.
Landings :
========
Widewing taught me how to land on cartoon cv's. Thanks WW. Funny to watch guys do landings to AHII either land or sea. I still miss a wire, sometimes. I am ready at my spacebar brakes in case, usually, I can rollout ok.
In Tower, hit F5, then F8 and observe.
I dogfight worse of most here, but I do pretty good at landings as I wish not to look too silly on people's mission tapes.
To me, landing correctly, any plane, is the most fun of the game. Landing all busted up, even more so.
I saw a guy land the other day just one wheel down. Check "Control D" I think it is, for damage assessment before landing. He didn't. He wiped out and went poof.

well......all of what was shown in these clips were NOT landings anyway...........they were arrivals.....or controlled crashes. :D :D
oooo....and what are you trying to say at the end? if you land, one of us might shoot ya on the ground with one of our rockets?:rofl :rofl

Well, what do you think a landing is? :D

When the plane touches the ground. (Anything after the plane making contact does not affect the "landing")
:D

Indeed! A controlled crash into the ground! ;)

"One of the crew left the drill standing in the paint pail, it fell over, sparked, and ignited the whole area."
Did he get a stern talking-to afterwards?
-
I'm surprised they didn't make him eat all the used fire extinguishers we use :D I was ready to give him mine !
-
i had a freind on that boat when it happened he said that was the longest 4 days of his life! he was on deck when it all started
-
i did some research on that while fighting the fire thay forgot thare on a BOAt and wound up dumping 1000s of gallons of water into the ship
