Thanks for the complement. I can't take credit for all of these pics, as Dogg, Mrs. Dogg, and Auger are contributing photographers to this layout.
We had a blast at the show.
The F-22 demonstration flight was absolutly unbelievable.
The 100 or so P-51's were awesome.

All the AKs 4th FG 613th WoT and more that were there, was a blast to meet everyone!

May an unclean yak squat in your hot tub.
Sorry, no Yaks showed up....
But there were scads of other AHers there. Several of the 4th FG (Fencer, Boozer, Hammer, PH, BSwin; wives Fence-ette and Swin-ette); 332nd FG (Simaril, TWolf/ Zip41); Hack9, Wooly, Odee, OGIE, BigAL, LIttle Al, Greyga and a few I can't recall off the top of my head. We ran into BearKats and SHawk, but the alt and zoom made their sightings brief.
There were a number of vets there, though of course always fewer and fewer around. I managed to get a poster autographed by a frail Alex Boudreaux, 477th Composite Air Group of the "Tuskegee Army Air Force" (as he signed his unit). Most exciting for me was listening to Wooley talk with a vet of the 8th AF, who happened to be the pilot of an 8th AF Mustang that happened to be skinned on a plastic model he had happened to buy. That autographed wing will be coated in acrylic clear matte, I imagine. (I'll let him tell the story and name the plane/pilot.)
After Friday and Saturday at the shows, several of us went to Dayton to revisit the AF museum.
Havent gotten my pics -- -some of which are on a low tech medium called "film" -- ready for upload. I'll get them up when I can, including pics of the sim pilots. Always love seeing the faces that go with the voices!
-
I'm still fuming that I got denied those days off even though I dropped the paperwork 3 months in advance.
I was so steamed that I tracked down the guy who did get them and challenged him to Rochambeau for them. He wouldn't go for it, the wimp.

Only downside to the whole event was the promised "51" Mustang flyby was either a joke on the crowd or diminished by something to 20 Mustangs doing the number 51. While it was nice to see that many, more than one pass with them in formation (finger 4) would have been nice. I see that they have modified the "Event Schedule" on the GML website to reflect this "change" in the program for Satuday. IF they flew it on Sunday (which I doubt) I will be doubly unhappy.
They could have flown some 8 plane sorties and did flybys nice and slow but as happened in 1999 they did not. A few more sorties of 8 to 12 Mustangs would have went far into removing the disapointment of the lack of the promised 51 plane flyby. The announcer's failure to point out that Mustangs were taking off also was annoying. First you would know is when it was too late to get the shot.
-
Yeah, the announcers were annoying, but I think that's part of the job description. They also seemed to chatter on top of the sweet, sweet sounds of piston engines....so sound pack potential, and simple enjoyment, were much impared.
There were a few gaffes, my personal favorite being a Friday mention of the P-51s revolutionary laminar flow engine.
But nothing could take away the thrills: seeing the backwash from P-47 startups blow down the snow fence, or hearing the sweet pounding revs from 4 Lancaster Merlins.
-
Agreed Fencer, the 51 formation caught me totally off guard and I had no time to get the camera ready.
On the other hand the rest of the weekend was a BLAST. It was awesome to meet the faces behind the voices like Simaril said. To finish the story that Simaril started...his name is Elmo Sears (Lt. Elmo Sears). He flew with the 479th FG/ 434FS. The coolest thing about it is he came up to us, well Fencer and asked about the shirt he was wearing and it went from there. Elmo would tell you stories as long as you would sit there and listen and I did, like a little boy at story time. I had him sign a P-51 model I bought along with a few other Aces to include Frank Speer, and Clyde East with 13 victories in a PR mustang! Here is Elmo's plane, American Maid.

to all of you I met and see you in the simulated skies soon.

-
Oh I forgot the best "announcer moment"...as the two P-47's were doing the simulated strafing runs, the announcer said "look at that ladies and gentlemen, those are two beautiful jugs" ....classic because I don't think he realized the double entendre.
-
WOW great pics.... We have an airshow here next weekend. I'll be there sunday as I have an appointment with some LW aircraft on Saturday (DGS).
Wings Over Houston (http://www.wingsoverhouston.com/)
-
Lt Sears is probably still around, when many of his comrades have passed on, because of a mishap that occurred at the O'Club. He said
"We ate, drank, and were merry because tomorrow you might end up in the drink. Well, one night I had been putting them away pretty well, and I reached down to put my cigarette back in my mouth...but stuck the wrong end in!"
He maide it sound like there was a fire to put out, but I hope that was understandable exaggeration.
Anyway, he said he never had a desire for another cigarette after that, and would trade his government supplied packs away.

As I understood it, they never intended to fly the 51 Mustangs in formation on Saturday, only Sunday. Not that I felt dissapointed on Saturday. We spent almost all day at the fenceline, and there were only a few times without planes in the sky to watch.
-
Their website until Friday night or Saturday said "51 Mustang Flyby" for Saturday. That's why I stayed an extra day.
Now the question is, did they pull it off on Sunday?

man i just barely missed this, was gonna make a trip to ohio to see this with my roommate but i diched on it because it was me and me girls anniversary.

The schedule I printed from their website on the 25th (Tuesday) had,
for Saturday:
"The # "51" Flight formation"
and for Sunday:
"Flight of 51 P-51s Formation"
It's the same as it is now on their website. I haven't spoken to anyone about Sunday, but I'm guessing it's on the web somewhere. I'll post a picture if I can find it.

This was the guns package on a D model, left side.
OTOH, having seen the F-22 fly, there was no real danger of anything else being able to get a firing solution on it. It was that impressive.

I never thought I'd hear of someone disappointed they saw 20 Mustangs in formation.:huh
The plan all along was for Saturday to have a formation flyby in the form of the number 51. Sunday they were to put up 51 airplanes in one single formation but I'm not sure how many they got up.
I know one of the airplane that was supposed to be in the show had her engine start making metal about 10 days before it was supposed to leave so it was obviously down. OTOH I know the airplane they crated over from Duxford was put back together in less than 4 days and flown to the show from the airport they did the reassembly. Astonishing! :aok
-
Here are some more pics, ones that I posted on our squad BBS. (Sorry -- but I don't feel like repeating all the copy/paste link action.)

Golfer:
Not sure how airshows are usually run, but I'm REALLY disppointed if "that was the plan all along." Simply don't understand why they couldnt have made that plan clear, even with the caveats and "might not work outs." I was able to go all 3 days, and chose the days I went based on what looked like identical schedules prior to leaving; if I had any idea there was going to be a massive formation Sunday, I would have jiggled things around so I would have been there THAT day and gone to the AF Museum Saturday.
I have sympathy for the massive logistics involved, but it seems pretty minor league to keep major information like that secret. Lord knows the announcers filled the air with enough drivel that it wouldnt have cost a thing to say "we're planning a special formation Saturday, and the largest fly by we can get Sunday." I'm thankful to have seen what I did, but VERY VERY disappointed to hear that something even better was pulled off on a day I could have been there.
-
WOW What lens and camera are you using? I only had the 55mm lens for my Rebel XT Canon, but your shots look far better than mine:aok :aok
That's Patty Wagstaff's autograph on AKDogg's pic of the FOLLOW ME girl. Owner of the jeep was staying at our hotel and I spent about 2 hours yakking him up. Seems he was in the 4th Fighter Wing in Korea flying WB-26's for the Intel weenies.

Odee is amazong.
At the show, and at AF Museum, the rest of us would be ambling along, and find Odee had disappeared again -- which invariably meant he was striking up a conversation with some really interesting person or another. Makes me a bit envious to see guys like him, with one of those personality magnets that makes everyone he meets a long lost best friend!

Gotta disagree with you on that. The 51 formation was to be Saturday as well. At some point, they changed that. They even mentioned it on the PA on Saturday that they "hoped" to up 51 Mustangs.
Yeah I was disappointed. I had seen 20 Mustangs before (and they did more than one flyby) back at the OTHER "Last Round Up" in 1999. It was actually 24 or 26.

I was there on Saturday and heard the same announcements you did. Knowing the schedule I never got my hopes up for something that wasn't promised. The closest thing I ever heard was they hoped to get 51 airplanes into the air which was made concurrently with the announcment to have people get the heck out of the way when they're tugging the airplanes around to the ready area. Also having 20 Mustangs taxiing past the crowd and up to the runway was a pretty good indicator that they were going to be flying only 20 airplanes on Saturday which for months now has been the plan. I can't feel sorry for anyone disappointed for the an airshow going as planned.

Mine is a kodak easyshare Z7590. It has a 10X optical zoom lens, f/2.8f/3.7, 38380 mm (35 mm equivalent) with 3.0X continuous advanced zoom, 0.2X increments that starts at 10X optical zoom (LCD display mode) .

Think we have something in common mr Phil B. Golf? :)
I didn't see any of the AH crew there. I made a few trips out to the line of mustangs, the legends area and even got to touch a flyable Lancaster. I took my AH hat with me but did spend most of my time for the airshow activities in the reserved box seats area. Money well spent if you ask me!
I spent my fair share of time in the lemonade line as well...it was a bit toasty for a late September day!

Golfer, I am not going to get into an argument about the 51 formation.
It stated on there website for months until sometime last week that SATURDAY would have a 51 plane formation. Don't fall for revisionist history. The two days were identical. And thanks I too heard the 51 plane announcement. The "20 planes" taxing might have been indicative of the "plan" but we were already there. Little late to indicate something then eh?
Cheers
-
There is no argument to be had about it Fencer. The plan on their website was a #51 formation since at least June 25th when my group bought our box seats. We had our own discussions about which day to go because of the 51 plane formation which was to only happen on Sunday. We settled on Saturday because of the realities of life and travel for those not lucky enough to live nearby leaving Sunday as an option.
There's no argument here because you were either misinformed, misread their website or are simply disappointed because you misheard someone's hearsay.
I'm sorry that happened but there is no great mustang conspiracy and certainly no reason to be disappointed.

Almost all of the flight pictures on the first page were taken with a Cannon Powershot S1, 10x optical zoom. (The present Cannon equivalent offering is the S3 with a 12x optical zoom.) To get the shots, I had to manually set the focus to infinity, set the camera on the action setting, preload the camera's shutter speed and F-stop, then follow the action until I got the shot I wanted, realizing that my shutter speed and F-stop settings might not be quite right by time I actually took the picture.

As I live 20 minutes from Rickenbacker, I'd been following this for about 6 months prior to the show. The only day I had ever known them to be having the flight of 51 Mustangs was Sunday. Having said that, I don't believe they did, as the weather was poor until Friday, so they didn't get the practice they required for the formation.

When I read the website, I remember them promising a 600 plane P51 formation, with 3 262's and an SR71 escort. Also, they were giving away leather bomber jackets and free kisses from the girl that was polishing "Sweet and Lovely." Why else would I fly all the way up there from Pensacola? :D

Dream Child, thanks for the info... Stupid techno-rookie me was using auto focus... :cry I have since gone through the manual and am practicing with the regular old fahion style of focus, f-stop, etc. like my old Canon 35mm has.

Discounting the exagerrations? I think you flew up there on the hopes of nabbing a ride in a pony or other bird.... as well as the photo=op kiss from the 3 Calendar Girls in there Cherries on white dresses :D
There never was to be 51 ponies in the air at one time... you guys are mistaking the formation NUMBER #51 which they did do on Saturday. :aok

For an aerial shoot like this was, you can almost guarantee setting the focus to infinity will work, as the aircraft were never closer than 1000 feet or so, and only rarely that close. As for the shutter speed and F-stop, even if you're off a little, as long as it's not blurry, you can adjust the lighting on the computer, at least to a point. To help keep it not blurry, set the shutter speed high.

Actually, Sunday was supposed to have 51 ponies in the air. One of my coworkers was there Sunday. His recollection was that they said they didn't have enough practice due to the weather conditions earlier in the week and they weren't willing to risk it. Can't say as I blame them, as it was raining much of Thursday before the show. Even with the weather, we still had several ponies fly over where I work on Thursday.

Question for the photo guys among you.
I had a number of shots that I thought would show a very deep blue sky, but they ended up being glared out into white. How would I have better set the limits with the autofocusing, auto exposure 35mm to keep the target plane bright enough to see, but the larger sky dim enough to show the rich blue that was really there?
I tended to take my shots with the sun out of the picture (duh) but between me and the plane -- so the light was shining on the surface of the planes, sometimes giving a visible reflection. I was afraid that with the noon and early afternoon sun's brightness, if I took the picture with the sun above but behind me the planes would be sillouhetted out into just outlines.
The planes looked bright and sharp, but the sky was washed out into white, like I said.

Simaril,
Are you shooting film? If there was still smoke over the airfield, or clouds behind your subject, that will make big a difference. The angle you take the shot from the sun will make a difference, as the blue is polarized light from the atmosphere at 90 degrees from the sun, so the perfect shot would have the sun be at 90 degrees from the subject as you're looking at it.
