I just put 1GB into my HP a305w, and removed my two other sticks (512 and 256).  Would it be ok to add the 512 to the 1 GB by sticking it in the second slot??

yes, as long as it is the same type ie. pc-2700, pc-3200 etc...

Not sure about your comp, my comp needed to have identical memory replaced in pairs. It's an Compaq gaming pc. You can go to the HP website and it will tell you or go to crucial.com and let them analyze your memory for you. It's pretty neat little feature.
