Title: Mmorpg
Post by: Tiger on October 04, 2007, 12:40:27 PM
I'm debating getting back on the addiction that is the MMORPG.

I used to play SWG, I survived their annoying changes, including the combat upgrade, butonce the "New Game Experience" or whatever they called that crap happened, I was done.
I enjoyed crafting (had a Master Armorsmith with a very budding business when I quit), enjoyed gathering with random people to go out, but also liked the fact that I could venture around on my own and still accomplish something.

Was browsing the local GameStop yesterday and saw two titles ont he under $20 rack.
EverQuest2 Classic  (I'm probably one of the 13 people on the planet who has never played this)
Ultima Anniversary

Anyone know anything about these two?
Or maybe can recommend another one?   And for the love of god don't say WoW... Blizzard ranks right up there with EA on my list of companies I hate.

Why do you dislike Blizzard? Have you tried WoW?

It is a good game. The best of its type. EQ2 is lame, I know a ton of people who bought it, and then quit after about a month and went back to EQ1, and EQ1 was a horrid game.

Its an bad moment to invest time in an mmorpg imho. The ones out there are aged even tough they have released some expansion packs for them.

Wait untill after the summer for the good ones that is comming up, Age of Conan for an example, untill then perhaps Warhammer online, but i doubt i personally will play Warhammer.

The Warhammer setup sounds an bit too "boxed" in so to speak, dont sound like alot of freedom to do your own thing.

SWG rocked before the CU, but was still decent afterwards.  The NGE destroyed the game entirely.  I was bothan and, at various times, a master rifleman/weaponsmith/terakasi/enertainer/droid engineer/swordsman....I loved that game and still render it dear to my heart.  I had at least another half dozen years to go before I thought I would have done everything and been everywhere that game had to offer.

What truly pathetic things those devs did to ruin a great virtual experience :cry

Im watching star trek OL (in the far off distance) and fallen earth is looking very promising as well.  Im keeping my ear to the track waiting for something sooner but Im not holding my breath thats for sure and for certain.

There's an MMorpg coming out call Jumpgate: Evolution.  The original is a flight sim pilots dream.  Everything took place using a joystick, from hauling cargo to dogfighting in near zero G space.  Great game, great concept and an mmo truly on par with AH2.  Sign up for the beta  JG:E (http://www.jumpgate-evolution.com/).

Galaxies sucked because instead of X-wing LIKE THE FANS HAVE BEEN DEMANDING SINCE 19-FREAKING-98, they rolled out the Jump to Lightspeed pointy-clicky piece of chit, which SHOULD have been part of the core game in the FIRST place (Star Wars without vehicles, starships and starfighters is NOT Star Wars).

EQ2 has greatly improved since launch and has become a real fun game to play.  I recently came back after Publish 36 from a year and a half break because I had quickly grown bored with the end game after reaching the level 70 cap with my monk.  I'm having a blast now doing end game raids and building up my AA point on my monk and started a new conjurer character to check out the improved pet system.  I think they still have a free trial that lets you play in the newbie zone until you hit level 10.  Should be enough to give you a taste of the game.  If you end up buying it, I recommend passing on the classic version and get the latest one bundled with all the expansion packs.

Jumpgate II is one to look out for too.

WoW is fun but it's just a care bear clone of EQ with Saturday morning cartoon graphics.  PvP is kind of fun but no real risk involved.  Think of it as PvP for the limp wristed crowd.

Lord of the Rings Online is another fun game until you reach the end game portion.  It's a definite WoW and EQ2 clone.  Basic interface, crafting and combat systems are taken from WoW and improved on.  The quest and deed systems are based on EQ2s.  The cool thing is about this game is that the developers release about every 3-4 months what basically amounts to free expansion packs in the form of "Books" that contain new areas, races, etc.  The upcoming Book 11 update will introduce player housing, a new character and a new zone.  Graphics and sound is top notch.  A good game if you're into Tolkien lore.

Stay away from Tabula Rasa for the time being.  It still needs a lot of work and is being rushed out the door too soon.

I am curious about the age of Conan game coming out.(saw some nice screenshots / flyovers)

I am not a typical mmorpg player however... I like to have a few drinks with my friends and slaughter some mobs.

I absolutely cannot stand the treadmill experience!

I'd rather die or barely survive a great fight than dink around for hours farming loot and xp.

A friend of mine and his son play DAOC regularly and every once in awhile I will log in for a month  to seige some keeps.

Wasn't all that impressed with the beta and it still needs work.  PvP sounds interesting but I'm more interested in the Age of Conan, the PvP seems more fleshed out and it has drunken brawling.

Warhammer hasn't seen much popularity in my guild. We're not just a WoW guild. A few of us have been playing Eve Online. It's pretty cool. Free download, $15/mo, and dozens of different ways to play it (trader, farmer, mission runner, pvp, etc, etc). MMOs have been pretty lacking lately though. World in Conflict, Team Fortress 2, and Halo 3 are dominating everybody's time at the moment.

Surprised no one has mentioned Hellgate:London. I've got the beta and been really enjoying it. Some group play but a larger emphasis on solo play.

I'd be a little cautious with Warhammer, the company that is making it (Mythic) also did Dark Ages of Camelot and really mucked it up after the second or third expansion. I played for just over 5 years and finially gave up when they failed to address the many and glaring PvP issues in favor of more PvE. Whacking 100 billion "targets" for hours on end isnt my idea of fun.

Warhammer has potential, but with Mythics track record I dont have many high hopes.

The thing I detest about most MMOs is the leveling grind. Kill 20 billion of these, gain a level, go back and kill 20 billion more. Then you have to do more grinding to get the uber gear. Then still more grinding to get the newest uber gear that comes out with each expansion pack.

In these respsects Aces High has it all over most other MMOs. No leveling, no uber gear needed to compete, just your own skill and understanding. If my cartoon avatar is going to die, I'd rather it be because of my lack of skill rather than some guys uber-dooper magic glass slipper.

Pirates of the Burning Sea - I'm playing the stress test now. Runs great on my 3 year old machine, and sounds like Sid Meier's Pirates online.

I still play Everquest. There are 13 expansions now and another coming in November. The next expansion is going to push the level max to 80 (ugh) so I will have 3 toons to level from 75 to 80.

Many things in EQ have been improved upon. Just recently a patch added new recipes to make two of the worst tradeskills (tailoring and blacksmithing) actually bearable to skill up.

Funny how until the other MMORPGs came out the EQ devs never listened to the player base but now they do.

No one has ever player U(ltima)O(nline)? I know thats my MMORPG choice. It's old but atleast you can play for free on the free severs, which in my opinion are better then the ones ran by EA.

I liked EQ2 ..graphics and team play were a blast.

I am currently in Vanguard on Sedrona server.. just that I dont burn hours and hours of time in it like I did DDO, EQ2, EQ1, UO, LoK, D&D.

Vanguard is akin to 'EQ3' ..another big jump in graphics, all the fun stuff is there.. you can solo or group all the way up in every class (so I hear, I have yet to get my 'main' past 25th lvl.. havin too much fun with 8 or so characters (as usual).

Unlike EQ2, you cant 'be' anything with any race .. wont find any dark elf paladins here :)

You can build boats, houses, guild halls, guild galleons, buncha quests for different stuff (I have still only done a few of the 20's stuff ..some purty cool toys ..bout halfway thru earning a Unicorn for my Dwarf Paladin)

An example of the graphics: My halfling bard carries his crossbow (different graphics for different xbows) and his two short swords.. when he swaps out to drum it shows that too, lotta different armor and bits variations.

The crafting is interlocking ..it takes a combination of characters to build a boat for example. A gem cutter to provide gems for enhancing weapons is kinda cool too :)

..when I am not flyin or cruisin :)

I tried Vanguard in the hope it would be like SWG and you can do whatever the hell you want. Instead it pegs you as a class from the beginning and My guy got to raze a village in the beginning, I am going around running around Pillaging and Slaughtering, leave the training area and it decides I want to have a quest for redemption from a buncha buddhist hippies? no thanks. Gimme a blaster or a gun and something that shoots.
