I'm not sure if I should post this here, but I need some help. I am always interested in learning new things, and I was wondering is someone knew or had a list of what the lettering designations on the side of most of the WWII planes meant. Ex: The VF and the B. I understand what the tail number is. Thanks

The 2 letter combination (VF in this case) is a squadron designation...each squadron has its own individial designation. The single letter (B inthis case) is the individual aircraft identifier within the squadron, so this aircraft is from "VF" squadron, and is aircraft "B" in that squadron.

Jimmy Goodson's P51B of the 336th FS (VF codes) individual aircraft letter "B" from the 4th FG 8th AF, Debden England Post March 13, 1944 when the 4th got their red noses, but prior to May 44 as Goodson had a Malcom hooded NMF 51B at that point. So put it about mid April 44 :)
Go here:

you can enter squadron codes in their search and the database will tell you who used them

He moved back to England. Think he was getting organized again before coming back to the game.
