Title: Heading to the range this Sunday
Post by: Curval on October 11, 2007, 07:52:01 AM
Yes, the liberal, left wing, Amerihater known as Curval is joining the Bda Rifle Club (assuming they accept me).

I will meet the "guys" this Sunday and hopefully someone up there will sponsor me, although because I am a former non-comm in our local regiment the fellow in charge said that it would be a no-brainer to allow me in.

Then they will do a police check on me and once approved I will be able to purchase a rifle and bring it in.

I will be needin advice on what to buy and also some advice on a wee issue I have with my right eye which is not 20/20 like my left eye, which has to compensate for the right eye in my daily life.  Trouble is...I shoot right handed.  I don't want to switch to shooting left handed.

I will post more about this after my meeting on Sunday.

curval what matters more than which eye has better vision is which is your dominant eye

Police check? Ah England right? Canada?

I made the switch to my left eye a long time ago and it worked very well. Building new muscle memory is as easy as dry firing lefty in your living room. The only real downfall in it is there are less lefty rifles and bows available on the market.

The plus side is you will shoot far better and be able to shoot from either side. I dislocated my left shoulder right before an African safari a few years ago and my trip was saved cause I could also shoot righty.

Ive known a hundred guys who switched and each one was glad they did. The real hard part is just doing it the first few times. Good luck.

When using optics (microscopes, telescope, rifle scope) you always use your dominant eye.  So Jim you  are exactly right.  That's all you need to worry bout.  My right eye is my dominant eye but I have the worst vision out of it.  Just thought I'd back Jim up.

Carry on,

So if my right eye is dominant I should use it to shoot even if the target is blurry?

How do I know if it is dominant?  Does it break out ball gags, whips and chains and make this declaration at some point?

Curval, focus on an object through a hole or something that you can gradualy bring closer till it's right next to your face.  Normaly the dominant eye will be the one whose line of sight you bring the aperture/gunsight along.

There's these things they invented a few years back.....they're called spectacles.

Now wouldn't it be just a little bit cool to be able to say, instead of "yeah, I just use them for reading", "Yeah, I just use them when I wanna pop a cap in someone arse."

I'm not sure yet man.  I will find out that stuff on Sunday I guess.

I suspect I will have to do the purchase through the club, but I am not sure I will be interested if it is just .22s that are allowed, for example.

Advice on what to buy is hard to provide until you know what the specifications are for allowable weapons there. Here it would be no big deal and would be limited to what you want and can afford.

As far as the eye issue is concerned, you should figure on glasses. I am assuming you will have a range requirement for safety glasses anyhow so getting a set with your correction in it would be a good way to solve the problem.

You'll need ear protection of some kind. I prefer muffs but others like ear plugs. Whatever feels good and helps you shoot.

What do you need for storage or do they require you leave your firearm at the range instead of your home?

i think I'll take my concealed carry gun down to the police range and pay a few dollars and shoot.

You may well find that if you are using a scope the poor distance vision is not an issue.  Basically, your eye is focusing in just fine close on the scope and seeing the picture of the long distance image.

Have Fun ;) Make sure you get some instruction so you learn how to do things right and safe from the start.

.22s can be fun, but (IMO) mainly if its walking around in th great outdoors and plinking at stuff. I've found 22's get pretty old on the range after a while. Though marksmanship target shooting is likely a different story.

If you are limited to bolt actions, then a nice Enfield would put you in touch with the greatest bolt action battle rifle ever made and the historic staff of British might through two world wars. A Russian Mosin Nagant is probably the only WW2 rifle that still has abundant cheap ammo.

If it even remotely allowed, an M1 Garand would be it, or a Carbine.

If Bermuda is even remotely as cool as France (http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=307335) you could even go with a dreaded AR-15 platform. Easy to shoot, cheapish ammo -- a great civilian range rifle.

I happy fer ya to have the oppurtunity to go shoot. Just seems like an awfull lot of stuff to do and hoops to jump through to just be able to enjoy recreational shooting.

Hope everything works out and you have fun dude.

I actually taught recruits how to shoot from the "ground up" based on British Army weapons classes when I got called up here.

I thought I'd mentioned that before.

Stuff like that gets forgotten in the shine of a good gun thread though.  ;)

The eye thing wasn't an issue back then.

curval.. what do you want me to say?

All I can really say is that I hope you have a good time and...

That while you are shooting that you think about what you are doing.   I see no reason that you should have less or more opportunity to shoot or even own and carry firearms than anyone else.

I have no right to stop.. or even vote on... your right to do so and you have no right to stop or vote on anyone elses right to do so.

I don't want you to saying anything in particular.

my point is that... for you... shooting at the range is sufficient for what you want to do so... you would limit everyone to that level..

Whatever you think is good enough for you is good enough for everyone else.

My opinion is that true freedom is being willing to allow things that you don't agree with.

Oh?   take gays... now I don't really want to think about what they do in their own homes but.. I have no right to tell two consenting adults they can't.

Take organized religion... I have no interest in going to their church but.. not my call on if the can or not.

women voting?  I think it is wrong but... not my call.

what do you have a problem with?   I would have less government not more.

Gun control...not my call.

You seem to have pinned the blame for this squarely on my head.  How EXACTLY am I to blame for this tremendous inequality in my country lazs?

well then.. I guess that we are not so far off... if you truly believe that it is not your right to vote on firearms restrictions.

It is fine to say that you don't think people should have guns.. it is a whole other thing to think you have any say in it.

So absolutely anyone with no criminal record can easily get a sponsor and join the club?

Do you have to be in a club to own a rifle? Club membership is a requirement? What's it cost to join such a club?

Inquiring minds are mildly curious!

mav points out the obvious... it is the fact that gun ownership is somehow something that is dangerous for "those people" but if you can afford it and get in with the "club" then it is ok..  special prviliges for special people...

I don't want to be part of your club... wouldn't want to... would rather shoot at cans at the dump with the other rednecks.

If you want to be a "gun guy" you don't do it by joining a club... you do it by supporting the right to keep and bear arms.

having said all that... I hope you have fun... I also hope you realize that all aspects of the gun sport are just as fun or...even more fun.... handgun shooting at dirt clods from various ranges... reloading your own ammo... firing 10 different handguns at a session... plinking at trash.   All of it at least as fun as putting holes in paper with a high powered rifle.

Won't they let you join even if you don't intend to compete or compete seriously? It seems that you should still be able to enjoy your own shooting even if the other folks in the club are serious competitors.

Swoop is right...I can't hit squat with a handgun.  A rifle is a very different story though.  I have received and given intruction in that.

Mav, I think they probably would let me join but their emphasis is competitive stuff.  There is another club or two I will check out.

Storch, the power of an 8 year old's presentation extends to fellow students, teachers and parents.  No further.

I hope you can find a club suited to the type of shooting you want to do. It can be a lot of fun. I enjoy the reloading, tuning of the gun and ammo I am going to run through it as much or maybe more than the shooting itself.
