Do you think he may be a little sore at being denied a fourth star and being forced to retire because of Abu Ghraib? Perhaps he is being objective in his pessimistic view. I hope he's wrong.

I don't know. He might be po'ed about the star he didn't get. I don't know what his personal politics are either. Regardless, I wholeheatedly agree with his assessment.

Odds are, if he were, he'd be either the lone dissenting general officer voice or no voice, at all. I'm finding it hard to ignore this administration's incompetence and bungling of policy and implementation in the face of multiple experienced sources criticizing it.

He's not the first General to criticize the first couple years of the war...one thing I noticed, was he had somewhat more disgust of the State Dept. than of the Pentagon/Rummy

He doesn't target just the administration, but congress (both sides of the aisle), and other civil servants/appointees. He seems to be a loyal to the troops still ("playing politics while our soldiers die"), which makes me believe he's sincere in his critiques and not just complaining or bitter about not getting a 4th star.
He points out that mistakes have been made, and that the current situation is "intractable"...i.e. We screwed up, but can't run away now.
This either won't get much traction (b/c he blames both sides) or each side will cherry pick the favorable points and keep at the same old ####.

very interesting, Gen. Ricardo Sanchez was the officer in command in Iraq, he was replaced, is he saying he was responsible for the messed up situation and that's why he was replaced?

He would have a lot more credibility if he had not had his career end in a negative manner. In this case it sounds like nothing more than sour grapes and an attempt to get back for the demotion.

Not thinking generals have such a tendency to make public stinks over their careers. Politicians certainly seem to, though. ;)

Well said. Right on the mark.
That's the same view I have of Wesley Clark, who was fired by Defense Secretary William Cohen back in the Clinton years.

His statements should be kept to himself.
All he is doing is giving support to the enemy by telling them to hang in their and kill more Americans and their public will give up yet again.
