Title: Average online lifespan of a AH'r
Post by: 68Raptor on October 14, 2007, 12:08:37 PM
Just wondering how long most people keep their account for Aces High, not counting the 2 week trial period. (I am sure this has been covered several times in the past but I did not see anything when I looked over old posts.)  I seem to have the bad luck of getting totally addicted to a game only to have it change dramatically and diminish in the core player base. I'm sure that most responses will be from those that have been around for awhile but what about those you have flown with. Is there a lot of turnover in the squads/subscriptions? How about from HiTech and what they see as turnover, new subscriptions compared to those over a year old. Keeping an infusion of new blood is paramount to any companies’ success but how many of those new players does the game retain after a year. From what I see it should be excellent. I am hoping AH is around for a good bit longer! As I am totally hooked and have gotten 2 folks to sign up and start flying!

all and thanks for giving virtual pilots like myself somewhere to have fun. :aok

I've given HTC about $1,300. :D

You aren't going to get numbers from Hitech or Pyro but I did recall hearing that subscription #'s increased after the split-up of the MA.

My guess is 33% of the players base has been around 5+ years.
33% hang in for 2-3 years
33% drop out after one year

While I haven't had much fly time recently, I see all kinds of new names Business must be up.

I have been a paying subscriber since November 2001. Was a paying subscriber of AW from 1999 until it's demise in 2001.

I can't see killing the subscription for a while yet. I am an addict I am afraid

cheers,

About the same here with the exception that I started with the closed AOL Betas of AW. And that I never paid a dime for the AOL version of AW. :aok

Y'all make me feel like a newbie.  I've only been playing for 7-8 months (started around early March of this year).  I have met a lot of cool guys that I respect and hope to meet more like them.

I don't plan on busting my account after a year.  As some one else has said...I am addicted and there is no rehabilitation:aok

I moved to AH as soon as EA bought AW, saw the writing on the wall.

Here since beta tour 3 with 3 months off because of work. Flatbar is my second handle because some BB poster idiots bring their politcal crap into the arenas.

Good, rough estimate I know but I figured that there was a large long term players base. If it is at 30% then that should keep the game fun and around for a long time. I did fly in the original Air Warrior years ago (AOL premium game) but did now follow it when it switched away and got sold to another company (don’t remember which one) Real life came up and did not have time to find another replacement for Air Warrior, got distracted by Counterstike, Delta Force and the poor attempt of MS of online flying with Flight Simulator. Lost interest in MS Flight Simulator when I got my private pilot license a few years ago. Just glad that I finally found a replacement for AW and AH has Air Warrior beat to spades from what I remember of it.

With the 6 months at a time deal, (I've bought one so far) looking forward to many more, Just spent another bundle in battery backups yesterday to prevent anymore outages like I had yesterday... and a whole lot more in joysticks, pedals, monitor, headset, TrackiR, large investment.. Hope AH is around along time.

Well, since AW, I have built 5 new systems, 3 just for AH.  Each system probably was about $1-1.5k to build each being close if not top of the line at the time of build.   Joysticks, only 3 but with 2 stick working.  I had to get 3rd for son.  The MS joysticks imop are the most reliable for the price.

If i would own this great game i would pay more attention to the new players, once they get in game  disoriented, advertising cost $$, why lose them ? this game should have at least 4-5 times more players in prime time with a little  "noob management ".
I would make them skip the health insurance and lunch $$ but pay for AH, let them feel welcome, not slaped in face  with answers like" stupid noob go to TA", "press alt+ctr+del", (press enter 3 times"). Who has time for game training arena?  imop split arena destroyed  the medium/large SQDs recruiting new players, that was like "welcome crew" for new players, teaching them the basics and make them feel usefull, and make friends and more fun,
Without those SQDs recruiting and integrating new players, a noob is like Angelina Jolie's new adopted from overseas dumped on Manhatan  streets,in the middle of the night

AH is a better game technically, but AW had a better community spirit.
It was smaller (although AH was pretty small at the start too), and we knew everyone.

I kinda miss AW, but wouldn't go back. I'm hooked here.

Been here since the first beta, missed the first tour of pay for play. Then managed to bring the whole squad over from WB. Been here pretty much ever since.

Took a few months off last year this time, but acct was never closed. (ty HTC & skuzzy! )

Hopefully when that day comes when the big guy upstairs needs another vet . I'll have just finished landing a 3 kill sortie and they will have to pry my joystick out of my hands.  :) I'm hoping to be flying bomber and goon runs in my 70's.

Till then I aim to fly and enjoy AH as long as I can. I'm 55 now and getting older and slower, but still hanging in there. :)

Been playing since beta, if I remember correctly I started late fall 1998 or winter 1999 or something like that.

Ceeray , Yareec , Magyar , Jarsci and such were my callsigns.

As Jarsci I played at least for 6 years.

I play less and less every year. The game seems to keep the same while the world and pc technology anvances whole time.

At least graphics , shooting and damage modelling should be comparable to early IL2 which came more than 5 years ago!

..but they´re not.

The only thing makes me come back is a strong Finnish community playing. without them I would be gone in a heartbeat without regrets.

I've been playing on and off since 2002... A lot's changed since those days, and I'll have to say that it's changed for the better.

Though we never have 750 people in any single arena anymore, the fights are better, the flight modeling is better, the graphics are better, and the sounds are much improved (courtesy of several dedicated AHII players).

It's been a good run, and I hope it'll continue to run for a very long time.

I'm with Sir Bat on this one.

I don't care if I play once a fortnight or every day... the $20 AUD is deserved as they have provided a reliable service which has brought me a great deal of immersion.... good, bad and otherwise.

Maybe not once a year.... haha. I do believe in being a loyal customer though and HTC have earned my loyalty.

They get me as close as I'll ever be to flying a 109 and I've met a great bunch of guys through this game. We just had a Raw Prawns BBQ and got pissed at PommyB's house whilst duelling each other in the DA on a LAN. hahaha.

That was a good night.

You know what's funny is that even when I read ghi's stuff, I hear his voice in my head.

I'm just at a year in AH2.  Flew AW years ago when it was free on AOL.  Real life caught up to me when it went premium.  Now the kids are pretty much grown, a little more money is floating around the house, and I'm addicted.

Title: How long I had an Account with Ah
Post by: Aidoneus on October 16, 2007, 01:13:46 AM
I had an account for nearly 5 years with a short 1 month intermission and a name change. I flew with the 444th AirMafia for about 3-4 yrs. and with the Midwest Mafia for about a year.

I have decided to again take a break because the game was getting rather stale with the same maps and the same whines over and over every day.

I keep checking the bulletine boards to see if there are any changes in the wind but all you see is the same old dirty laundry.

I'll be back when there are some fresh maps or they do away the "ENY".

ENY should never get so high as to ground everything but a Jeep and a C47. I thought the purpose was to balance out not actually cripple a country with ENY.

Reading and waiting...................... ........

Rust, my first AH ID was flying in tour 12.  While it's never been overwhelming hours, it's been a constant part of my time since then and prior to that in AW from 96 on.

My energy goes in cycles for it.  Right now it's caught up in the scenario so getting into the MA seems tougher to do until the scenario is over.  But I'm having as much fun as I've ever had so I guess that means something:aok

But then the bug bites and they are back, ussually under a new name.

I've been a member for a long time, since in AW (I think) planes were just dots and the sky was always blue, mountains had no texture and were always triangles, and it was then the only game in town.

I quit in January, 2006 to get my Master's degree. There was simply no way to do that with this game on my computer :). I graduate December 15th, so I'm contemplating a return.

So much has changed (arenas) and the JB's are even gone. Geesh.

I started flying AH in 1999,  later on I joined the 339th Fg. I flew MA for a few years untill my health when sour and could not aford to pay & play due to doctor bills, so I started flying H2H then that went sour as well. I was ban because of my attitude on the AHBB because of the closing of H2H but thats all in the past now. So now I don't fly at all, only from my own airfield.
I've been building R/C Aircraft and flying them insted, if you want to see them, I have a website, but I not sure if I can post it here or not with out Skuzzy's OK.
I just want to say that I have enjoyed the years of flying with all of you guys/gal's it's been fun, and I wish you all the luck.

I started in tour 24 1/02 in AH.  I had been non-stop in AirWarrior since 2/96 and will be in here until I can't fly anymore due to some unforseen drastic situation.  I do miss the community of AW.  I remember being enticed by AW SVGA Dos version but didn't play online on Genie as I couldn't afford it then and played it offline.  Now as an old fart, I think I've forgotten more than I've learned about combat flying cause I suck for air in AH today.   :cry

Played for a couple years straight after AW folded.  All of 2003 too.

Now, it's 1 or 2 months on, 2 to 3 months off.

The move to small maps and stale maps made things less enjoyable.

Since they started this game in AOL...think 1996...any of you remember when it was $1.99 an hour?  And at the end of the month you get a $300.00 credit card bill. :)....talk about some major wife ack..whew!!
Then went to warbirds...then to AH in '02 I think.
Several times i've not flown for several months at a time...but like bat says...its worth continuing to pay even if u don't fly much.....very fun very cheap hobby!!

Been here since open beta...no interruptions.  I've seen many a name come and go.  I've been divorced and remarried in that time span.  Thank God wife #2 is 100 times more understanding about my AH addiction :aok .

She even bought me the 57" lcd tv for my puter.....what a woman!! :D
(it keeps me out of the bars etc...)

Thank you HT and staff for a great game!

ive been playing about a year i did my two weeks in sept of 2006
could not at the time afford the 15 dollars, so i did hth with a mouse until about june i boutght a saitek 290 stick.
i subscirbed about a week after they killed hth.

its been a love hate relationship.
i play just about everyday for a few hours, when i get tired or bored i go watch tv instead or read a book.
if life ever intervenes ill probably make time to play at least once a week. (preferably on squad nights)

i dont see myself canceling my account as long as i can play the game on my computer. well its my mom;s computer and her internet so at anytime i could cancel my account but im sure id come back.

i rarely play any other game, i own half-life 1&2 call of duty a few dungeon and dragons games neverwinternigths diablo diablo 2 starcraft.
i rarely even buy new games im still trying to finish all of neverwineter nights and i have a full library of  games from my childhood. on a laptop that was given to me.

its a good comunity of mostly helpful people. Sure there is a whole lot of BBS chocolate goodness to deal with, but I want to be here when CT comes out.
If it sucks (which im sure it wont) i will still make time to fly the ma's special events and maybe one day if im good enough become a trainer.

as a squadmate once told me
"the game is great for the first few years. but what really makes me come back is the people and getting to kill them."

oh just to add

its funny i never considered playing world of warcraft or final fantasy online. i love rpg games thats the back ground i came from, AH is my first and probably only flight sim.
But as soon as i was able i gave my money to hitech gotta love the little guy. guess it goes back to my long time dream of flying planes.

I think I must be getting old, because i cannot remember the exact
dates I started either AH or AW.  I know I was flying AH for a while before
I registered for the BBS though.

Nobaddy is a crusty old fart..but he is usually better at dates than I am,
maybe he knows. :)

I started playing Warbird about ver 09 and when the big split came, I beta tested AH. My sqaudron flew in AWIII, now they are all here with me.

After flying AH, I could not go back to WB or AW

Teenage years: subscribed to Motocross action
20's & early 30's: subscribed to Playboy
Late 30's & early 40's: subscribed to Aces High
Been 5 years now, & will most likely be another 5, because I get more out of this subscription than I would ever get out of the other 2 :aok

I've donated $120 since joining in January, but had to close the account at the end of August for various reasons. I plan on resubscribing either in December or January if all goes to plan.
Kind of funny that the day I had to close my account was the same day the B-25 was added. Got maybe 2 hours of play in that day.

Started AW in the early 90s'  Quit.....married and had kids then couldn't afford the hourly bill.  Came back again to AW in the 90s and started playing AW and AH in early 2000.  Left AW before it's demise and played AH only.  Have been here awhile on and off.

Started playing AH in Sept 2002, before that it was AW from 98 till it's death and then FA. That got boring after awhile so started to look around for old AW names and found a bunch here in AH.

My guess is 33% of the players base has been around 5+ years.
33% hang in for 2-3 years
33% drop out after one year

I have always enjoyed numbers/stats and stuff.

I would guess:
20% 5+ years
50% 2-3 years
30% 2 years or less

Who knows, but it is fun to guess. :)
