Post by: Tac on October 15, 2007, 09:11:13 AM
'soon'

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071015/ap_on_hi_te/hitachi_hard_drives;_ylt=AtXWyRj4o0udFSRGnETk.EWs0NUE

"Hitachi Ltd. says its researchers have successfully shrunken a key component in hard drives to a nanoscale that will pave the way for quadrupling today's storage limits to 4 terabytes for desktop computers and 1 terabyte on laptops in 2011."

Can you imagine how long it would take to defrag that thing?  Start on Monday, you might be ready to go by the weekend.

I would think that R&D money would be better spent coming up with bigger and faster solid-state memory to completely replace the spinning hard drive.

Then again the two guys who developed the technology did win the Nobel prize for physics this week suggesting this is the best the world can do for the moment.

Great....  4 TERABYTES.   Just how much crap do you need to keep on your machine?

Go ahead.  Put DVDs, all the music ever recorded and the library of congress on your laptop.  Then go virus scan all that crap (or scandisk it when windows moofs up) and wait while 4 TB of files gets itself sorted out.  Good luck - bring a book.

Well, 4 TB is a 700-900 normal DVDs, so...  no.

Anyhow, 4 TB....  oughta be enough for anybody.  ;)

I remember thinking who would ever need more than 64KB of ram, and later, more than 30MB of drive space?

Didnt Bill Gates once say "No one will ever need more than 640K of memory"?

That's not....  entirely accurate, but I was making fun of it.

It has been reported that he did. I went from a 16k atari to a 64k commodore 64 which seemed extravagant. A few years later in '86 I bought an Atari 1040ST with a meg of ram, felt almost decadent.

I had a Apple IIc and was tired of loading everything everytime I wanted to play something.  Checked out the Apple catalog and I think I could get a 5mg External drive for $600.   Decided to buy a 386 at the BX. It had a 80mg hard drive.  I still remember talking to the sales guy and saying "wow 80megs? I'll never use that up"  I thought I had someting good because all the 286s at work only had 10 and 20meg hard drives.  Within a couple of months I was using Doublespace to get more storage.   1 meg of ram was $105

That's a heck of a lot of porn.  I bet even JB couldn't fill 4 terabytes.

Well,

to be honest... a TB of data is not that much anymore....we have already installed a few systems with a Petabyte of storage and we have many customers with more that a TB of data on line in real time...

The biggest problem with large drives is the access speed and overhead when running in raid configurations (depending of the type of data that is stored). performance will become (in some cases already is) a problem

2-4 Terrabyte are nothing if you work for film or print media,
we installed two external 2 terrabyte drives on one graphics workstation
to help some dude store his increasing data.
And after 3 weeks, both Harddrives broke LOL
ok to be honest it was just consumer quality, and we had it
run 10h/6 days a week to see if this will work out.
