Plan to dig up 350,000 bodies in historic London cemetery for Muslim burial site.
It is a peaceful resting place for 350,000 souls - an historic graveyard which now serves as a nature reserve.
But plans are afoot to dig up the ancient graves at Tower Hamlets Cemetery - and reopen it as a 21st century burial site.
Officially it would be known as a "multi-faith" cemetery but it is likely that it would principally answer calls for a Muslim graveyard in the largely-Asian East London borough.
But the Labour-controlled council's environment spokesman Abdal Ullah appeared to be in no doubt about the feasibility of the plan when he said: "To preserve the respect and dignity for everyone, I think most of the graves would have to be cleared out and we'd start afresh."

They ask for respect and this is the respect we get.

A couple things from the article.
"By law, any graves more than 75 years old can be removed. "
That seems to be something fairly easy to either understand or change if that is the desire of the majority of folks in the area.
"The City of London and Tower Hamlets Cemetery was opened in 1841 by an Act of Parliament. "
and
"Other markers have gone altogether, torn down when the graveyard was deconsecrated as a Church of England cemetery by another Act of Parliament in 1966 when it was deemed to be full.
The intention was to create an open space for the public, which led to two bomb-damaged chapels being demolished and a swathe of graves cleared.
In 1986 ownership passed from the Greater London Council to Tower Hamlets and in 1990 the Friends of the Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park was set up.
Seven years ago the park became the borough's first nature reserve and it is now tended by 1,600 volunteers."
There is ample precedent for the change. It just seems to be an issue now because of the muslim influence in the change proposed. It's pretty obvious that there have been changes in the cemetery's status previously so I doubt there is really any true reason to block the next change. The slant on the story does make for a nice sensational or tabloid effect though.
It will be interesting to see what they do with the remains when they dig up the graves. It seems a shame to see a bit of history go away, but I don't see anything that will prohibit the operation.

Another Daily Mail hysterical headline.
Maverick hit this one on the head. As usual, there's more to a story if you actually dig through the facts.

not to get too far off track but this story kind of exemplifies why I do not believe in getting embalmed and buried. A hundred years (or two) go by, no one remembers or cares and you get dug up and hauled off to some land fill......
Cremation seems so much more appropriate.

so long as they actually cremate you...there was a case in atlanta where they took the money and then tossed the bodies out back. boggles the mind.

The Jewish semetary in Prague would just stash them up. So you have perhaps 30 feet of burial,,,not sure.
Anyway, how about the viking way. Put the coffin afloat and on fire. Somewhere down the Thames it goes KABOOM
(I know I'm bad :D)

I'm leaning towards being put into a lead box and then hauled to a really really deep part of the Atlantic and then dropped overboard when I die.
I figure it's the only way I'll ever get near those really freaky creatures at great depth...you know, with lights on an antenae and stuff.

If you hold your breath long enough on the way down you might even get to see one.

Actually as long as I think Im gonna get vremated thats fine too. Its not like Im going to be aware Im rotting in a landfill as opposed to sitting on the mantle in an urn.

I'm getting buried in our family plot in a tiny little cemetary out in the country overlooking where I was raised.

I prefer to be cremated.
What are the chances of having my ashes sprinkled over Catherine Zeta-Jones?

Cremated and dropped from a plane over a sporting event so I can inspire retard-freakouts in our climate of massive overreaction and hyperventillating panic.

I see her and her hubby every once in a while. I could maybe bump into her "accidentally" and pour them on her or something. I don't know her or anything but they are always out and about here. Of course she'd know and hate me after dumping your ashes on her, so it'll cost ya.

Ya better be nice to the kids or you might find out you'll be used as kitty litter instead of sitting on the mantle.
