I have been without a mic for almost 4 months. I have found it somewhat liberating. Over those months my flying has improved drastically. Coincidence? My squad hates that I dont have a mic, I guess they miss my wonderful renditions of Journey, Earth Wind and Fire, and Aaron Neville:rofl
My question is whether a mic matters that much? Please go into vivid detail about some instances where a mic has either saved or hurt you. Please try and keep the opinions balanced. If the posts lean a certain way, feel free to play the devils advocate. Please no trolling unless authorized.

99% of the time I always try to give a fellow pilot a "check-6" call. The other 1% is when I hit the "Power" key instead of F-12.
-
I use one occationaly and end up having to set it up each time. To me they are a pain in the derriere. I never was saved by one and always use my check six button to warn others. I don't have to remember which button to push for squad or area.

Flying for two years now without using mic. I don't speak English, and if I would start, I'm afraid people will begin to talk much more to me. Which is a problem because
- I don't really understand most what people are saying anyway
- I'm actually afk most of the time (yes, even deep in enemy territory, with enemy cons around me)
There is only one thing I miss with written text, and that is a local text channel.

range? its chnl 3

Text channel 3 only transmits to those who spawned from the same field. A player 10 yards from you won't see your ch3 if they launched from another field.

Yup. Especially notable when I fly air cover over a own vehicle base - only way to relay messages to the guys on ground is to use country text channel.
But if I write "B24s high" on channel 3, pilots all over the map will start looking for them - if they upped from the same field than me. Regardless of actual distance.

Well, Lusche, I have the same problem, especially when it comes to understand what the others say, but, being hardheaded and masochistic, I keep using a mic. :)
With time, you get used to the different voices of squaddies and learn to know the other people... now I understand almost everything Rocky says, even though Wrag is a desperate case... :D
And there aren't only mother tongue guys around, you'll find you can chat pretty well with foreigners, like the Finnish, Germ...(oops! No, you'd speak your own language with them!), Dutch people and so on! Yeah, even with Freezman! :D
Besides, most of the essential combat terms are easy to understand and use. So, why not having a mic? It's a way to improve your English!
Twenty, on topic: well, mic is very useful when you wing with someone, I use it a lot, you can tell your bud what you're doing, warn him about bandits and give him instructions if need be.
-
I've never used a mic.
There are serious advantages to using them though. Communicating with your wingie in the middle of a fight against multiple cons for example. Whenever I start flying again, I will get a mic going first. :aok

Well sir, one night a long time ago, a few of us were playing, (duh), i had just gotten a kill and was flying in circles over an airbase, saying my goodnights b4 logging, while this was going on "Jawbone" was being ganged by 4 fighters just out of my sight, "Jaws" has a mic, but doesn't like useing it for whatever reason and types everything, while i'm flying looptie loops he is "screaming his fingers to the bone" in the text buffer for help, unfortunitly by the time i noticed the text buffer he was back in the tower.

For the other reasons I pointed out. People will start to "chat" with me much more. I'm very happy they don't do it much right now. I really hate all that blabbering on local range, and if I could .squelch all, I would certainly do it. ;)

I've got a squaddie who never uses his mike even though he has one. It's because either his wife is sleeping in the next room or he'll get wife ack if she's not.
It's a pain in the a@@ when wer'e winged up to communicate by typing while fighting someone.
-
I have been flying without one for almost a year.
Last week I finally got a mic.
I feel that it adds to the situational awareness , and has answered a few game questions I have had.

I had used one from day one and my mic went dead for a week. i tried to play but it was to frustrating trying to type in a fight and tell people enemy positions and what not.

What the???
I don't use a mic, never have, but i always recall coming from totally different base and talking with people on range.Or so i thought?
-
I can only wish... "some" Squeakers were mic-less! Then I wouldn't hear mindless chatter and HELLLLLLLLPPPPP theres eeeeennnnneeeemmmmyyy behind meeeee!!!!!!!! at 4 octaves above middle C (right before the get squelched!):rofl

You only thought. Different bases = no communication on channel 3
But you can read people 200miles away if they upped from same field.
The "Room" (not "Range"!!) channel is one of the most misunderstood features in AH.

I'm not a squaddie; I fly solo. I tried a couple difrnt squads. Vox chatter too much, I usually turned it down a notch. I prefer to type unless heat of battle needs vox input. My mic is always ready to go; I just don't usually use it. The other thing I don't like about squads is stoopid assignments gets one killed too much.

Sweet shades account.
