Still PM, still in IT, but with another organization. I'd been with the org I am working with for 9 years, it was time to move on. The project they stuck me with 9 weeks ago had no definition, no concrete requirements, too many "chefs in the kitchen" and my temporary manager who I was on loan to kept changing my roles and responsibilities on a weekly basis. I HATE that!
So, I applied for some internal jobs in IT (All PM related) and landed an interview yesterday, and today they said that I fit their requirements best of the interviewees and that the job offer was in HR process!
Woo hoo! I'm kind of excited, and kind of scared! :aok
-
Congrats.
Good luck with the new job.
-
WTG Rip!
PM?

WTG Rip, a little change will do ya good, or as one of my old bosses used to call it "Expanding your comfort zone"
Mark, In my old job PM meant Preventive Maintenance, Im thinking in the IT world PM means Program Management... just swag though...

Well, that is better than Purposely Moping.

I guess you didn't mention 22758 (+ 15000) of forum posts on work time :D
-
So does this mean the 787 will be on time or delayed?
-
Congrats Rip!
So have you gone to work for EADS?

Dunno but I imagine their internet usage will drop by a bout a third. :)
-
WTG Rip.
Pay rise?
Does this mean the carpeting in the garage will be replaced by gold plated tiles now? :)

COOL! WTG!
Now you can carpet the doghouse and driveway too ;)
-
Rip,
I feel your pain. For 8 years I was crapped on working IT. Never enough money, people and management that would drive you up a wall. I have had customers screaming at me in the hall way because a switch failed. Not that I turned it off, but it just failed. I have never hit a women before, but if it were not for one of the agents stopping me that woman would be missing some teeth and I would be in jail.
So I walked. Now I am the CIO of a company here in Michigan. Not large yet, but we are publicly traded and will be doubling in size here in Michigan. No more working in Detroit either. I don’t have to carry a gun to work anymore.
It IS a bit worrisome when you change your job (any job), but I have a life now, I’m even doing some game programming. Good luck in your new job.
(and I took a 15K pay cut to get this job)

What ... you don't work at Boeing anymore Rip?

OUCH!

WTG RIP
Just did the same move for the same reason, +40% later and half the responsibilities. 10 years at same company leaves you at a salary rate equal to the new hires, it doesn't pay to stay in most cases, better to move on every couple of years. Im just pissed I didn't leave sooner.

Thanks fella!
rpm:
still delayed...probably even worse now that 787 will be one of my customers! Ironically, a first line supervisor I had worked for 12 years ago has been named the the Vice president and General manager of the 787.
Mark:
PM=Project manager
Swoop,
no pay raise. Straight across.
Dred,
my head has first priority on any future carpeting. ;)
Phaser,
sounded like an uphill battle. Glad you're happy where you're at now!

Nah, I won't. I'm vain, but not THAT vain!

Congrats Rip. A change of scenery every now and again is good for the soul.

Thanks. The beauty is, I am controlling my own destiny this time. 10 weeks ago my immediate manager controlled it for me by saying "you're assigned to this project" (which is a very high profile, stressful job that I hate!). Now I'm back in the drivers seat. I went from the frying pan to the fire, and now I'm going from one fire to another, but at least the fire I'm going to now is a smaller fire, not as many chefs burning it, and its a new group that is up and coming (hiring more people in the future) :aok

Congrats Rip :aok
Is it in interior design in general, or just basic carpet laying duty at the Boeing plant?
-
Congrats,
It's better to be working somewhere you feel comfortable than dreading going to work every day.

Actually carpet munching. :p
I accepted the formal offer. I'm just waiting now for a start date, which is determined by how long my current manager holds onto me, he could hang onto me for 30 days if he wants, but I think he's going to ask the new manager of how soon they need me first.
-
Anybodies companies looking to hire more IT guys? I need to get out of the education business. There is no room for advancement in my current job, and well the money sucks here!
Anyways, congrats on getting a new job Rip!
-
Good deal Rip.
Nine years was the longest duration I have had with any one assignment.
Although I do know of some inbred leads over in commercial that have been with the same first level manager for nearly twenty years. Those people disgusted me with their perverse cronyism.

Congrats Rip
I made a similar job change in July.
The bank has promised our IT dept a lot...they said we'd get raises, fund our Microsoft Certs and more. Last December, with their bottom line hurt from the drop in mortgages, they "warned us" that they may not be able to keep those promises. Sure enough, come January of 2007, they put off raises until June and added more to our workload for less. When June rolled along, they were still waffling. By then, I'd been interviewing for jobs all spring.
Now I'm working for a local hospital in their IT dept. The con of the whole thing is its nights. But I've applied for a daytime role in the same dept which looks promising. The Pros: they health pay insurance 100%, additional $ for night, evening and weekend shift (differentials) and its 3 miles from home. The bank job was 39 miles away, so just not paying the gas money I was is a huge savings. Not paying insurance, even bigger. And its more base pay than I made before.
I know some people stay at the same job for 20+ years and love it. I dont know if I could be like that. As my interests change, so does my desire for where I'd *like* to be.

Congrats Rip. Hope it works out for ya.

I think I'm going to use this the next time a PM tells me that I'm behind schedule. :D

Well done. Change is good. I quit a job in July. Hated it with the same kind passion some of you guys feel for the Democrats.;) Haven't worked since because I'm pursuing a long held ambition. Taking longer than expected but getting there gradually. It was terrifying at first, but no regrets yet. Like Rip, I was messed about in the last couple of jobs I had. Except that I was much lower down the food chain and paid a lot less too. Decided enough was enough. The catalyst was the birth of my son. I realised that I have a responsibility to give him the best I can. I also realised that when he grew up and compared my wife's career and my lack of a career. He would probably come to despise me as a loser, quite correctly. Not to mention what my wife might think of me eventually if she has to continue to subsidise me.
So I took a deep breath and dived in the deep end. I may yet drown but life's a gamble. I do occasionally wake up at night thinking 'Aaaaaggh, this is the stupidest thing I ever tried'.
But it's worth the effort!

Good luck with your venture! What is it that you're venturing in? You're doing the right thing by determining your future rather than letting someone else determine it for you. One must be their own master of their destiny rather than waiting for life to happen! :aok

Don't want to say what it is just yet. It's nothing too exciting though. In the past, I would confidently announce my plans to all and sundry. Only to look like a clown when it all turned to dust. So this time, I'm just getting on with it. Not that it matters if I explained on this forum. It is an anonymous forum after all. I'm just being consistent and disciplined this time in not discussing it beyond my wife and a few others. All will be revealed in due course, hopefully.
-
Good luck
Having re-located back home to Scotland I landed a job a few weeks ago at a local company.
Same as I was doing in the U.S. (sys/network admin), but gone from the 'lone' guy supporting 20-ish people, to the lone guy supporting 160+ people spread over 5 buildings.
Good thing is I'm kept busy and the days really fly by.

Well Rip, resurrecting your thread. I can now reveal what my 'secret' plan has paid off. Yesterday the phone rang and it was the boss of a skydiving school I had been in touch with previously. He flat out offered me a salaried job flying his new jump plane. A GA8 Airvan, it's a bushplane, a sort of mini Cessna Caravan or a big Cessna 206. The CAP uses in the US.
My first flying job in my mid forties:cool: I don't quite believe it. To be honest I was all set to go to my fall back plan and the boring but well paid office job.
For once being a bit older has paid off. Mainly because he knows I'm less likely to disappear off to the airlines like most young pilots. I like it too because I'm in early and there are plans to acquire turbine aircraft and twins and I could end up well placed in the organisation.
On top of that I am guaranteed work as an instructor at a flying school as soon as I get the rating.
What was it George Peppard used to say in the A-team. 'I love it when a plan comes together.'
-
Sounds like fun CPX, just remember they are jumping out of your perfectly good airplane :D
-
Congratulations Cpxxx! :)

Yes indeed, it's the only flying job where your passengers make their own way back to the ground.
-
How fun! :)
Congrats!

Here you go. I'm not sure how many are in service.
Thanks for the replies guys.
