Title: An Idea on the AVA
Post by: Dichotomy on October 16, 2007, 10:41:37 PM
I'll be the first to say that if it's not broken then don't fix it.  In my opinion there's nothing wrong with the AVA.  The setups are interesting, the regulars are good sticks, and the general standards of conduct are what I joined this game for excepting FSO's, Snapshots, and Scenarios.

So I'd like to try an experiment for the next 8 weeks.

After talking it over with the She Devil I will make a commitment to being online in the AVA starting around 8:00 CST and ending around 10:00 CST on Mondays and Wednesdays.  Starting this coming Wednesday.  I will also invite my squad to participate in this endeavor.  I fully admit that there may be some of these days that life just 'happens' and I will not be able to make it for more than a peep in, say 'hi', and jump out.  But, for the most part, I will bend every effort to make it.

If that means I up a set of bombers to go de ack a field while I'm waiting for someone on the opfor to show up then so be it.  Come shoot me down and I'll grab a fighter and we can go at it.

I will ask this from the AVA team.

A) Reduce or eliminate the ack from carriers and bases
B) Make base captures impossible
C) Put in the MOTD what two airfields are closest to each other, which country is the planeset for each, and which country is left out.

I will ask this from the people who choose to play
A) Be polite.. a little smack talking is funny.  Drama is stupid.  If it goes beyond a nice fight or you should have done x, y, z, and I'd have been screwed, take it to PM's (I think it's funny that we have to take anything to PMS.. WE ARE MANLY MEN.. we don't get PMS)
B) 2 V 1 is cool.  After that it's gang banging
C) No HO's on merge 1.  After that it's game on (I'd prefer no HO's but that's me)
D) No vulching.. if you're close to an enemy field then let the guy get co alt before engaging
E) If someone on your side is 1v1 then leave them to their own devices and skills.  Watch around for enemies or hover over the fight then, if your guy dies, reset with the victor.  If the enemy dies wait until he ups.
F) Take the new guys under your wing and explain the culture and the code of conduct.   If they accept and play in the manner that is acceptable treat them as a squad mate.  If they don't feel free to hang them out to dry.
G) Switch sides to balance the sides.  Shooting your squad mates is FUN.  Not that I've ever done it but I'd like to.
H) HAVE FREAKIN FUN!!!!  So what you lost.. your monthly bill didn't go up and you're still alive.  I can't speak for Oldman and Fork but I had a good time tonight and didn't land a thing.
I) No bringing your whining to the boards.  It's a CARTOON AIRPLANE and you're still alive.  YOU screwed up.  Deal with it.  Learn or laugh.. but don't whine.

Just an idea.. anybody in?

If that was the reality (and it hasnt been for years) then the AvA would have 25-60 people (IMO) every night. I keep looking and see headcount of zero or close to it. I ended up in the DA and then the TA last Sat. before heading over to the LWA late. Had some fun fights with Domin, Jaxxo and a few others before a couple of truely great matchups (spatula {p-51}) and (MiamiAce {la-7}).

Both fights probably went 10 minutes or more, Spat was a true 1 vs 1 while Ace came in to the furball a bit late {so did I} and locked on after I'd been rumbling around abit...

Overall gameplay in the MA is getting better all the time. Sure its a gangbang at times but overall quality of the fights keeps creeping up. Historically in the CT {at the end} my fight with Spatula would never have happened since 85% of the player base would have run to help or picked it. In fact if you want a definition of what the CT started out as that fight is it. Clips are up from both sides in the training section.

I hope the AvA takes off, it should represent the best of AH...

Ahhhh, yeah, I agree with you on that.  I was just saying that those are pretty match the unwritten rules now.  That does not mean that anyone follows them :rofl

In nearly all of our setups the ack has been reduced to a quarter of its MA effectiveness.  The current setting seems to be just enough to ward off most of the vulchers, while not really providing much cover for an ackrunner.

Base capture is something that's being debated.  There are quite a number of people who think that the lack of a war-winning goal is keeping arena numbers down.  For the time being, anyway, no one seems to be trying to take bases.

The MOTD suggestions are good ones.  I'll put them into Friday's setup (if I don't forget them all by then....)

Thanks for the effort to be the first in the arena.  Most times the presence of one of us for a few minutes will bring others in.  As always, it will be good to see you there.

It's like this Dich,

Your either a dweeblameluzer or your not a dweeblameluzer. The rules are silly and just cause arguments.

If you fly in the MAs like a dweeblameluzer but don't in the AvA like a dweeblameluzer your still a dweeblameluzer and your dweeblameluzeriness will eventually shine through.

If you don't fly like a dweeblameluzer until someone does something to you which you consider dweeblameluzerly then begin flying like a dweeblameluzer, you are a dweeblameluzer.

If you say "Sorry for being a dweeblameluzer, but I thought you were someone else, they did something dweeblameluzerly to me." you are a dweeblameluzer.

If you act like a dweeblameluzer because "everybodyelse" is acting like a dweeblameluzer you are a dweeblameluzer.

What can be done? Nothing. Vast majority people are dweeblameluzers-- just the way it is.

Now, I'm not sure where I fall on the dweeblameluzer continuum, but I play the same way wherever I play. It's simpler that way, I'm old,  and it's less to keep up with.

I can think of a few things but I don't type them on the board or in the buffer :D

Good one Kong

I believe he was just trying to list out the so called 'gentlemen's agreement' that everyone likes to hear.

Noob perspective:

There have been nights when AvA is very close to what Dichotomy proposed.
On those nights I stay, take my beatings and learn something while I have a lot of fun.

When the dweeblameluzery starts, I leave.
If I see those with a penchant for dweeblameluzery present when I join, I leave.

Sorry Kong, the term was too good not to plagiarize.

Am I stupid or is the arena jacked up?   I go knights and I'm stuck in a tiny corner of the map.  Logged and relogged and it's the same..

I express no opinion on the first part of your question, but you are correct about the second part.  The arena was jacked up.  Possibly there was an arena reset when the "Did you know?" feature was added today.  All is now well again.

I've flown in AvA a few times.  It was great for the first few nights and very much like Dichotomy's envisioned style of play.  I figured I would be in there often.

Then it turned sour a few nights and I haven't been back.  I'll pop in some more and give it a try.

Title: Something to Remember:

Dichotomy,

I agree that it sounds like the arena setup is good to go:aok   Salute AvA staff for listening to our concerns and keeping this important arena available to us:aok

As far as the name calling (buzz kill-- I think u called it "dweeblameluzery") may go, it might be a good thing to remember that not all history buffs are 20 or 30 something.  The amazing thing is that there are some that are not through high school yet.  I can list a few that have great interests in the history and specs, represented in AH2.  I love to listen to this kind of kid, and I believe they look up to the kind of folks that I have seen posting here.

I only bring this up in hopes that it might help buffer the amount of acusations of poor sportsmanship, if we (myself, included) remember that not all sticks have the tools yet to do what is expected of them.  (BTW, these same teenagers often are some of the better sticks).

Cant disagree Chili

Monday and Tuesday this week had good turnout and relatively low whining on 200 or the boards.  I'll be there tonight as promised
