Well since HTC has removed the H2H arena, new players really cant get a feel (or addiction) for the game unless they start their 2 week free trial....
I think 2 weeks free in the MA is in sufficient time for rookies to get use to the game...after 2 weeks most rookies have died so much they are frustrated, then if they want to continue playing they have to pay...
I feel an additional 2 weeks will allow them to start landing kills, and really get hungry for more kills.
I see HTC is spending money on advertising/commercials, so i can safely assume they are looking to grow the community and i feel this will help
I know when i started playing Air Warrior Beta on AOL, i was killed over and over, but i kept playing because it was free....If i had to pay after just 2 weeks i would have dropped out and gone to play Aliens Online, or Legends of Kesmai instead. (Which i eventually played anyway but thats besides the point)
Thoughts?
-
I didn't subscribe after my first two weeks... No way was I going to pay $15 a month to get my oscar handed to me. After spending a few months in H2H, though, I decided to subscribe.
I think the free H2H will make a comeback sooner or later.
-
they got to play for free for how long already? and you wanna give them MORE free time?
-
I got hooked on this game after my first day! Had so much fun that it seemed the 2 weeks wouldn't end, but it did. Payed the day my free trial ended because of how fun the game is. Unfortunatly, alot of new players don't see the game like some of us others do. They see it as real life, and they must live every fight and get all frustrated and just quit. I play for fun. :)
-
I subscribed because I wanted a game I enjoyed (even though I sucked at it) to succeed. But now, we're supposed to pick up the tab for a bunch of noobs who aren't going to pay to play a game because it's difficult?
Don't kid yourselves- nothing in this game is free- it's only around because the subscribers paid for it. Wasting that money on people who won't pay because they can't pwn everyone and everything within 2 weeks is foolish at best.
-
I did my trial, and a month later, did another, then paid.
-
I downloaded the game and practiced off-line for two months before I madeup an account to go online. I expected online it would be more like how the military aviation community really is and not just one big free-for-all. So, with this in mind, I wanted at least to be able to fly fairly well. I could fly and land and takeoff off-autopilot. Fight? I still can't fight.
I was signed up, just one day and I was hooked and submitted credit card info the next day.
Die? I still die too much in here. I used to think score mattered. It doesn't. I just play for fun. This is the only multi-player online game I ever tried. Like active duty military, I love it and at the same time I hate it. If I get too bored with same o' same o' or I get po'd too much, I take a few days off. Game could use a few improvements and everybody here has their opinion, but AHII is just fine the way it is. Active duty militay, you don't like it, too bad, wait 6 years until enlistment is up, then a period of insanity when you reup another 6.
Air Warrior was free? I never played it, but knew about it late 1980's. It was hosted by Genie, then, not free and a long distance node was too rich for me.
-
2 weeks is plenty.
But I have an idea . . .
If you think they need more time maybe you can get with HT and setup some type of Pilot Fund. Then you could submit cash to HT to mentor so many pilots through 2 extra weeks each for free. Each paying customer would have the option to pay into the fund so much extra a month to support the fund.
I'd pass on it... but DVDA I'm sure you'd be glad to pony up cause you really care about those that do not want to pay for themselves.
No need for HT to throw money at it as it will be completely and totally supported financially by DVDA and the volunteers he forms up.

I agree that some alternative option is needed just because it is difficult for a completely newcomer to online gaming. I played 2 week trial then H2H then MA. I also don't feel HTC needs to worry about H2H being hacked, which it has been atleast 3 times.
H2H became too much of a problem but maybe eventually something will work out beneficial for everyone.
2 Week MA trial followed by 2 month h2h trial. Paying subscribers have unlimited access to MA and H2H.

That is a pretty ******* like comment. There are a lot of good people on here that would not be able to play this game if the price was that much. I am sure you would be crying to high heaven if HTC changed the price to 40$ a month. So save the self righteous, I'm better than everyone else, raise the price because only the financially privileged should be allowed to share the same skies with me, comments to yourself.

Thats the ticket. Rather than man up and admit that he said something ignorant, he should just pretend he was "fishing".

the beer and popcorn was a dead give away..
-
If you want to feel good about the monthly price...
Back when Air Warrior was hosted on GEnie, you had to pay by the hour to play. At $6 an hour, it didn't take much to rack up a staggering bill.
-
few min back i payed 13.25$ for a pack of Benson&Hedges , here in Calgary,AB . imop comparing with the cigarettes price in Canada,AH is cheap price for an adiction

I can't see the name DVDA without thinking of an annabel chong movie I once saw.

I was bad at it when I started and I'm still bad at it. Some minor improvements in my augering skills has been achieved. Perhaps a 4 year free trial?

that's usually how business works....you provide a product or service that people want and you charge them for it.
if you can't decide after two weeks that this game is worth $15.00/month
move along sonny nothing to see here.
for pete's sake it 's 15 bucks a month.
come up with the dough or hit the road.
-
it takes more then a month to be any good at this game. join find a buddy in the TA or DA and you will be good in no time. pay for it.

You know, 15$ is not a lot of money. If they don't have it, they are not going to subscribe anyway. Two weeks is more than enough to find out if you like a game with WWII equipment.
-
Although 40 bucks is a tad steep, I think it would be a good idea to have a basic subscription, and a premium one. The basic one would allow access to the TA,DA and an MA arena. The premium would allow all these and the SEA, plus a separate MA.
Im not arrogant, but I do prefer to play with people over a certain age. Most parents would see the basic subscription as a bargain and chose that one to subscribe to for their kid. I dont think $22.50 would be too much to ask for the fun we get out of the game but thats about as high as Id like to see it.
If it allowed HTC to hire someone tohelp speed up some additions to the game it would be a good thing.
-
Just as long as no one suggests a seperate "limited" arena for limited account users. Been there, saw that done, and it was almost as bad a mistake as having 2 seperate flight modes to begin with.
Perhaps HTC should consider making the EW arena free to expired trial account holders for a grace period of 3 months? This would give ample opportunity to prospective players to continue to evaluate the game, without being too onerous, or giving up the whole enchilada as a freebie. And because it's not a "special" arena, it shouldn't end up being an "entirely seperate community" which is something to avoid at all costs.

HOLY SMOKES ghi! Unbelievable!!! Your post made my day because it's a GREAT day to be an American in California where Marlboros are $3.65 a pack. Besides that we aren't getting ready for snow here in NOCAL unless there's an ice age forcast for the next century!
The original AH DID have a month free... My first go round was a month... the day my free time expired I ponied up and paid. Three game ids later, Here I am again. My wife tolerates AH2 'cause it keeps me home at night!
Extend the 2 weeks... NAW, if your hooked you'll pay. another two weeks will allow squeekers that don't have a credit card to linger here two weeks longer. They can't or won't pay so why punish us with HHHHEEEEELLLLP THEEEERRRREEES AAAAAN EEEENNNNEEEEEMMMYYYY BBEEEHHIIIIIIINNDD MEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!! for two more weeks.
By the way do new players automatically fly bish by default? Please say it aint so! :rofl
-
....ah excuse me...but when I joined this game it was $29.99 a month!! ...please don't expect me to feel sorry for folks having to pay $14 ...dont be so damn cheap

Elitist drivel pure and simple:O
And yes you are arrogent
Have you lost your mind? NEVER tell a business that you are willing to pay more for there service... They WILL raise their prices as market forces dictate. Why hasten that process? If you're so eager to pay more, send me the extra 8 buck a month and I'll invest it for you. :lol

Whats with this free this free that more free of this more free of that. This is not a new drug that we need to go through clinical trials for a few years before we approve it. You either like WWII equipment and fighting with it or you don't. What HT should really do is up the price and use the money to better market the product. I was looking for a game like this for months before someone at work mentioned it. Google was coming up with garbage every time I did a search for games like this one.
-
Well now kiddies there was a time when we paid on a per HOUR basis
Back in the day for Air Warrior....
Anyone know anybody else that paid over $100 a month???

My opinion, for what it's worth, is you can get the game and play offline for free for as long as you want. I don't know a lot of games that are just given to someone for absolutely nothing. That's all the free you need.
The two week trial is really nice but, after two weeks, if you're undecided go kill drones.
-
I think I started playing when they were doing a special 1 month free for a limited time. I probally would of quit after the two weeks but i stuck with it because it was free.

There was also a time when we played for free... back in the days of Air Warrior on AOL.
Anybody else know where you can play to your hearts content absolutely free?
BaldEagl <<<<<
Seriously, I started when it was free on AOL. I can't remember how long it took me to get hooked but it wasn't long at all. When they moved it off of AOL to GameStorm and strated charging I gladly ponied up.
I don't think a month free would be out of line. I would think for a total noob it would take that long just to get up to speed and try all the various aspects of the game.
It really doesn't cost HT anything. Server space is about it and maintaining the free account for an extra 2 weeks. If it converts a few more people then it's worthwhile.
On the other hand, why are we debating this on the BBs when HT probably has hard data supporting conversion rates based on the length of the free trial?

AOL Air Warrior 1, 2 and 3 Were free, then one day it wasnt, they started charging per hour on AOL or $9.99 on gamestorm. Gamestorm included other games like Aliens Online, Godzilla Online, Magestorm, Legends of Kesmai, Silent Death + 20 or so more games. Hmmm $9.99 for over 30 games and you guys want to charge $40 for 1? Gamestorm also offered 1 Month free with access to all their games. 2 weeks from HTC is pretty weak

Really? Cause every source I've found seems to say that DosAW was quite expensive :( Cause if it had been free I would have been a squeaker back in 98' (though, I don't think we had mics back then for flight sims. So cept' for bad spelling, I doubt you would have been able to tell.) Maybe even before that, as I owned a copy of DosAW, and I proudly own a copy now, it cost me a whole $5 along with 4 other games that came with the "Flight Squadron" CD Pack.
And I still play offline on it (Windows XP may be a beast, but it can be tamed into the realm of DOS!), and try to get the H2H to work for it with me and my crazy friends, I doubt I'll ever manage to get it to work, but hey, I can try.
Edit: I lost the subject of this thread, and I think that two weeks is more than enough. By the time most people find Aces High they know they like WW2 Equipment. I wish my two weeks in the summer of 06 had been longer, but you know what? I'll live.

Gamestorm SUCKED! They RUINED AW, put ZERO $ into software development (The ONE upgrade they tried ruined the dar/pop-up map, and they wouldn't pay whoever they contracted to even FIX it), planes looked like flying sticks, as did bases. You want free, pay 20-30 bucks for IL2, see how it goes. AH isn't the government, they are in this to make MONEY

It was expensive at one point in time. By the time I started in '96 it was a free game on AOL, then went to a subscription service on GameStorm.

Isn't H2H still available via LAN?

I think HT is astute enough to determine if he has the correct business model or not.

After my first week I was hooked!
Trial was up... I couldn't reach for my wallet fast enough! Paid for a month... then about three weeks later I was so frustrated I ALMOST didn't renew.
But something told me to do so... so I did.. and I gradually got better.. at least good enough to not be so frustrated anymore.
Two years later... well I still got my derriere handed to me on a regular basis.. but much better than before (especially after my hardware upgrade last April).
I haven't played in four months though... money got tight.. ended up closing the bank account and filing bankruptcy. Got to where I had to use my $15 for gas rather than for a money order for HiTech... but we're about through all that.. and I have a big fat check sitting right here waiting to go into the mail first thing Monday morning! YESSSS
Looks like wife ack will be on my case once again real soon!!!

For me....2 weeks was not enough. After my 2 week trail, i spent an additional 3 years in the H2H arenas before i finally subscribed. If it hadnt been for the H2H, i would not have stuck around. Would not have been a member of the 31st Bomberbarons, 71 squad RAF, 66th Hellcats, and started VF-31 Tomcatters which i am now CO of. I wouldnt not have made such good friends that i do today!! So yeah, i think more then 2 weeks is necessary now that H2H is no longer with us!
