Title: Simple Tweaks for NEWBS
Post by: WaRLoCkL on October 17, 2007, 12:42:26 PM
Hi guys, Im posting this forum to help the new guys out on some things that will improve their situation awarness in the game and are common tweaks that alot of new people wont know about.

GAME SOUNDS - start by going to options, preferences, then game sounds on your clipboard. I will give u the list of GAME sounds u need to pay attenttion to.

1. ENGINE - the normal engine noise during powered flight, drop this setting in the LOW 20s

2. Engine start - explanatory Low 20s also

3. Engine off - engine off noise.  Low 20s also

3. Stall HORN - 50 is good here

4. TIRE - noise if tire in wheeled vehicles - turn down to about 50

6. Stress - stress noise on plane during hard manuvers, turn down to 50

7. WIND - wind on plane, turn down to 30

8. Vehicle Engine - your engine noise in GVs not needed turn down to 15

9. Vehicle ENG starr/stop - turn these down to 20

10. Tread - noise tread makes - turn down to 10

11. Jet engine - turn down to 30

12. External engine - turn up to 100 this will allow u to hear enemy planes farther away this has saved my butt a few times.

This tweaks will help u while by being able to hear whats going on around u, this is very important while u are flying now lets move on to changing your views so u can see better.

PLANE VIEWS

If u notice while u hit your hat switch you can turn your head to certain directions. this allows u to keep eye on your enemy or targets u may want to bomb.

start by moving your hat switch to all your views and then using the PAGE UP, PAGE DOWN, and ARROW KEYS to move the pilots head to the desired position in designated view and then when u have found what u like hit F10 and it will save that position.  use this for every single plane  that u fly.

now on to the next tweak

STALL LIMITER

go back to your options then preferences, select FLIGHT, then uncheck the box labeled STALL LIMITER.

Think of this as having training wheels for a bike, although  it will keep the bike rolling strait and true it will seriously damage its ability to perfom cool manuvers and hard turns.

U WILL CRASH ALOT AFTER U TAKE THIS OFF!!!!!! however stick with it once u learn to REALLY fly your plane u will be a much better pilot.

I hope this thread helps out some of the new guys in the game, this are very common tweaks alot of aces use, but never really tell people about, and since there is no real manual on the game u have to learn alot of things for yourself, enjoy your new game experience;)

true a lot of people use these kinds of settings i remember a thread about FX1 mentioning sounds being down. and a long discusion after that.

not trolling or trying to flame but i did that automaticaly on my own for my own comfort level not to get and advantage. later i realized that it is an advantage.

i 'm color blind to certin colors and my hearing has been damaged some. so i tweek the game so i can still enjoy it i really have problems when people are in dark or green planes and get low to the ocean but over grass or above me its no problem. plus my computer sucks to start with so i have to tweeki it to just be able to play lol

reason my shooting position is zoomed all the way in.

Stall buzzer should be set to 100% if you plan on turn fighting.

I just keep all my sounds at default level and keep looking around the skies for enemies. I never really liked turning the sounds down/

No stall buzzer for me.

I wouldn't post that warlock, everyone is going to call you a cheater..

Attention all newbs dont listen to us vets. We are all gamers and will spoil you rotten with a tricks and cheats. HT allows us to control our setting but the true AH GODS will hackle you to death if you turn to the dark side.

AH GODS begin our bashing

I keep "wind" at 70% and use it for air speed and aceleration indication. When you only fly a few planes, it works well when you get used to it for each plane.

I'm probably in the minority in that I fly better with the sounds. I have my engine sound turned down to about 40% (as per wifeacks request otherwise the house "rumbles"...

I downloaded one of the soundpacks once and fubared my whole feel. I fly furballs almost entirely locked into the surroundings so the various sounds tell me an awful lot about how fast I am if I'm slowing down, speeding up on the edge...

I personally can't stand the stall buzzer, and probably would have quit AH if I couldn't get rid of it.  Extremely annoying.  So annoying as a matter of fact that I'm annoyed by seeing it referred to in this thread, and even more annoyed that I'm typing about it now.

I switched over to the "buffeting wind" sound file for the stall rather than the buzzer.  Realistic?  Doubt it, but I like it.

I also turned my flap sounds all the way up so I can hear when they move during a fight.  ( I hear lots of flapping at my house...)

I turned my wind all the way up too.  (My wife seems to think that has somehow affected the way it sounds when I "break" wind too, but that's a seperate subject...).  I use the wind to tell me what speed I'm at.  She uses it to alert the kids of a need to evacuate.

Realism?  Real pilots use headsets to keep sounds OUT!  We use them to pump sounds IN!  Real pilots use headsets to LESSEN the sound of engines and all other external sounds.  We use them to pump those sounds DIRECTLY INTO OUR NOGGINS!!!

For realism we should be turning down or eliminating ALL sounds except vox (and maybe that should be subject to random failure, un-intelligible squeals, and static) and a basic background drone, right?

We also use sounds to help us get a better understanding of our game-world, where in real life we would use our other senses as well.  I don't see adjusting sounds as a "crutch", "cheat", or "handicap" any more than using Auto Trim, zoom views, icon types and distance, 30 second reloads, RTBing while pilot wounded without being subject to extreme pain, and fear of never seeing our friends and family again, etc, etc, etc...

Well said mtnman, I think some people forget that this is still just a game and u cant make it all real. I turn my sounds down simply because i dont like my ears to hurt, and u ever tried talking over vox when u got a -4 wepped up?? also when i try to talk if im near other planes the plane noise will feedback out of my headphones into my mic and people cant hear me.

The wind just got to annoying for me as well as stall buzzer, i like things pretty quit while im in the air, so that i can concentrate, i only turn my external engines up so that i can hear when someone cuts theirs out to force a overshoot LOL.

A little eccentric???  That's just because I toned it down a bit, hehe!

Lady's product?  I guess to me it more closely resembles my neighbor running over a large rock with his lawnmower.  At least what it used to sound like.  Where I live now I don't have any (can't get any!?!?) neighbors close enough that I can hear their lawnmowers, and my wife is careful not to run over any rocks...

I have all sounds down to about 50 so i can hear music should i decide to fly along to music with windows media player in the background.  It does make it tricky to hear vox with music on though, whether thats a good thing or a bad thing you decide.;)

how many "aces" do fly with sounds on?  I only play music when i'm having a few beers, otherwise i like to try and be immersed in flying a ww2 fighter.  Am i the only one who enjoys hearing the loud roar of your planes engine, especially when engaging WEP.  The guys who make sounds packs for AH provide a fantastic service to the AH communty.

I fly with sounds at default...except that annoying base under attack thing.
If you are relying on hearing the enemies plane, you have bigger issues.

i had a custom sound pack in i couldnt stand it and it was eating my memory so i got rid of it pluss there was no difference in f4u- all of em's
regular engine noise and wep. (i dont like to look at my main pressure all the time to see if i still have wep on) :D
\
course i could have just changed it to a jimi hendricks guitar lick but im lazy like that.

I fly with all my sounds pretty much at default although I did turn my engine sound down to ~90% so I could hear the wind better.

I'm not willing to give up the immersion for some edge in gameplay.  After all, WWII pilots probably couldn't turn their engine sounds down so they could hear bandits better.  Seems to me like a crutch for weak SA.

U forget the part where they wore earmuffs?

I turn my sounds down for that sole purpose alone so i dont have constant roaring in my ears since they are sensitive(one has permenant damage)

It makes it alot easier to hear my radio and mellows the flight out for me so i can stay calm and cool and not get exited or ill.

The more relaxed u are when u fly the quicker u think and the less mistakes u will make.

Oh please, stop kidding yourself.  You turn it down to hear the engines of other planes.

they weren't earmuffs.......they were the headset for the radio......and yes, they did reduce the sounds of the engine a bit.......:noid :noid

Maybe its time HTC tied external sounds volume to internal sounds volume.
E.g. own engine @ 10%, external engines @ 10% also.:t

:O :p

well since i got a crappy headset and mic external engine noise will actually feed back into my mic and makes it sound like im talking threw a lawnmower.

I do keep external sounds at normal though so that I can hear enemy planes.

I still remember the part where it is a game, and I like to watermelon chat, go over stratagy and generally TALK TO MUCH while im in the air near a combat zone.

I get caught sleeping alot befor I get ready to enter a fight by a high cherry picker waiting for the incoming enemys.

I dont really mind so much but my main point is if my internal engine noise was normal then i would not be able to talk at all without causing distortion.

I have the weirdest problem with my MIC, i have to mute and unmute it approx. 3 times  in the sound properties each time i boot up to get it to work.

I just like my stuff to work right, and if it dont work right then i made do with what i got. I have to pretty much turn down any CONSTANT sound while im playing. for example, STALL, Engine, tread, wake, wind.

All of them play havoc with my ears and my mic. so they got to go.
