Any Bow Hunters out there?? Going out in the am, wish me luck
:aok
-
Yep, bout 41 years of it behind me. My old man was a big bowhunter and I was raised with it. Good luck in the a.m.
-
Can't wait to introduce my new Matthews to the rut next week.
Good luck.

How do you hunt bows

Good luck bow hunting in the morning.
I'm taking my 13 yr old son out duck hunting if the weather and waves aren't to rough. Lake Erie can be a Biotch.

i make my own english longbows from hazel or yew.
the last one i made shot an arrow, tipped with a hardwood i obtained from Peruvian jungle indians, straight through a solid plywood door. i had to cut the arrow off on each side as there was no chance of extracting it in one piece.
i think my best distance so far with a light plastic fibre arrow was around 120 yrds. This is only about half of the range of the medieval longbows.
rough estimates from a friend who knows was that my latest bow has a draw weight of about 90-100lbs. shoot it with your right arm for a week and your triceps look deformed...
not much to shoot at in england, so i settle on paper targets or trees.
have a good hunt!

They always get POed at me when I start sitting up a tree stand in the strip joint.
How you get by with that?

I think he's talking White tails..not split tails. Although I've often found that the runway that leads to the bathroom or the bar usually produces.

If theres a type of hunting I haven't done then I would have to think about it. Rifle, handgun, slug-gun, but my main love is the Bow. Ive taken so many critters, in so many places, I just dont much care if I kill anymore but I do love sitting out in the quiet woods with my bow.
I used to run dogs for upland but after I lost my vizsla I lost the heart to hunt without him. I have thousands of duck and goose decoys and have probably spent years looking up at blue skies for every one day of the "perfect storm" of waterfowl action. But...lol...thats what waterfowling is. Ive been to Africa several times, a trip every hunter should make. Most of all if you shoot bow.
Since I got hurt on the job many years ago I bow hunt exclusively from the ground. Trying to figure out that wise old dominant buck from ground level is a thrill nothing else can match.
I hope we can save hunting but Ive really been worried about it lately.

You buddy up to a deer in a bar, go wandering thru the brush with him and he'll do the hunting.

Im taking my spear out for seal puppy poking tomorrow and then later i might go blue whale stabbing :aok
-
Just got back from the ranch. First morning two bucks and six doe This morning i had one buck and five doe. No pigs and it was really quiet in the stand. Not one gun shot, that's strange for our area.

Here's what I would do. Buy a cheap Biro and disassemble it. Make a slot each end and bore a hole in the middle. Attach an elastic band in the end slots then through the hole insert the ball point ink tube........a bow.
Now drive down to the super market and go to the meat section and fire ya little bow at as many packs of meat as you like.
OK...sorry man. I don't really mean to put a downer on ya fun time and it's nothing personal but to me it ain't right.
I'll readily agree bow hunting is probably more skillful than telescopic rifles and blowing brains out all over the wilderness but there really isn't much need for it in the western world. Yer.....OK there was a time. There were large families and binding poverty. Extra meat on the table and all that but if you ain't got the "need" why do it. Pest control is all I can think of.
I won't even get into the facts of bad shots wounded prey etc.
In our western world we over produce food to the extend of destroying some of it. We don't even give it to the third world. Then we have artificial prising through quoter's and what not. Oh .....blah blah the list goes on.
Guess I'm just trying to say there's plenty already producing without actually whacking.......... Bamby.:cry
Oh. P.S There's only one real bow...the long bow. Compounds are for girls :p

here in the us there is a need to control the population of certain wild animals. ie.deer . hunting is one of the tools used to control overpopulation.

First, big game hunters generally dont go for head shots -- the head is small and moves around. Second, a bow cant do 600 yards :). Third, have you ever tried hitting a 6 inch target at 600 yards with a 30 caliber rifle? With or without optics, it takes considerable skill.
-
The biggest deer ive ever killed was with a bow. 13 points..lacked 3.8 points in score from being a non-typical whitetail. It ook me 3 days to actually find it...with my arrow still in him

Lynx apparently you dont get it. You dont understand conservation, the need to control animal herds, or the fact that if it wasnt for sporthunters there wouldnt be any wildlife surviving in this world or any land for it to survive on.
Hunter/sportsmen and woman in America saved the deer, the turkey, the waterfowl, the Elk, the bear, upland game, the list is endless. The Bambi crowd is always keen to judge us but if it was up to them there'd be nothing left. Their high morals end when it comes to schilling out their $$. And they forget these same morals when it comes to walking into McDonald's for cheeseburgers.
If you want to see somthing truly disgusting go down to your local slaughterhouse and see how that hamburger you had for dinner last night died. It just aint right to me.
But I wont judge you Lynx, you seem like a great guy. I guess you just dont know any different. And was never educated on conservation.
-
Have you ever seen a cattle farm or the like? Specifically for mass culling/production? I'd rather eat free-range game off my plate any day.
My favorites are moose t-bone & roast, deer chops and game pie (rabbit, duck and pheasant).
Good luck to all hunters!!

lynx
Hunters play a big part in conservation in the states. Tell you the truth the deer population has increased sense i was a kid. We have so much land that the only way we can keep nature in check is to hunt.

O'Club ?

I leave for 12 days of Bowhunting in NW Wisconson on the 2nd of Nov! Go Rut Fun!
To all the Antis....there's room for all of God's creatures....
....right next to the mashed potatoes on my plate:D

I was a diehard bowhunter until a few years ago. Now I'm a diehard bowhunter on temporary leave. I'll get back into it for sure, but I want to switch from right-handed to left, and don't want to shoot anymore until I get new equipment.
My prefered method of hunting is with my birds (falconry), followed by muzzleloading (.54 flintlock fullstock), followed by archery (longbows and recurves). I hunt with a .270 too, but that's just "grocery shopping" in my eyes.
I've built a few bows, both self-bows and laminated bows. I prefer the self-bows, but have better luck with the laminated bows. I lose patience tillering the self-bows and usually wreck them. I've been making my own arrows and other equipment for as long as I remember. I even knap stone arrowheads (still can't compete with a caveman though...). I've built several muzzleloaders from basic parts and plans.
if you ain't got the "need" why do it.
Does that apply to everything? Do you need to post here? Need to play AH? Watch TV? Heat or cool your house? Make as much money as you do?
Is it ok to do anything without there being a need?
Fact is, you're responsible for countless animal deaths just by being alive. Even if you don't eat meat. Animals don't die of old age in the wild. Death is a fact. Not good, not bad, just a fact. Death under normal circumstances is FAR from what we humans view as kind or humane in our idealistic bubble worlds. For that matter, death is not even a requirement for an animal to be eaten. It's often just a side-effect. Not that it will change your opinion of course. Some people want to hunt, and are fortunate enough to have that freedom. Some want to, but can't. Some prefer to pay others to do their killing.

i remember the breaking news on CNN,about Wisconsin's hunters controling humans overpopulation also

Just got back from Nebraska bowhunting whitetails. I didn't punch a tag but my I had blast helping my brother get his first.
I've been flinging arrows for many years all over North America. Started with a recurve, dabbled with compounds in the late 80's and went back to traditional after a couple years.
Major addiction to say the least. I work in the archery industry as well, so I'm a lost cause!

You're so silly!!
That was a murderer controlling the human population.
They normally do that in more populated areas, but hey, crime knows no bounds, right?
I just wish city folk could keep a tighter hold on their scoundrels!

Isn't it interesting how city folks have put their survival and hunting instincts to sleep, and want to do the same for the rest of us.
There is an instinctual 'need' to hunt. Our ancestors have been hunters from the instant they crawled down out of the trees and started to walk upright.
Don't believe me? Then tell me why the first reaction a human has when they spot a wild animal is to get closer. Trust me, petting something is not a survival instinct. It'll get you killed.
Hunting is natural. Hunting by humans is no more evil than that done by the great cats, wolves, and other premiere predators of the wild.

Great thread :aok

still a little warm here the rut has not started yet, I did see some good sign, but did not see anything,i'll be out again ,I have 3 stands up need to take some more time off work and get in the trees :D

To be honest, I never saw the attraction in bow hunting. Give me a rifle any day of the week.
If you want to play the "it's the primative way to hunt" card, why aren't you out there with a stick and a rock?

If we (archers) have to explain you wouldnt understand. There is something to be said for being able to get an animal within 30 yards or less (ranges differ according to surroundings), holding full draw for that quartering away shot, and then letting the arrow fly.
To each his own though. RPM just keep in mind that if you gave archery a good serious fair shake, you may end up selling alot of your hunting rifles or at least not being in such a rush to dust them off when the season hits.

There are only two proper ways to hunt any game.
Bow or spear.
The gun stuff is for girly men with little peni:p

Hehe, I like hunting too. No bows though. No reason to make an animal suffer for days because I am a bad shot.
However, I don't make lame excuses for it. I don't like hunting because I want to save the animals :rofl

An interesting point. Studies have shown that animals shot with bows experience less pain and emotional trauma than those shot with guns. The arrow passes through the hole made by a razor sharp broadhead. Ever cut yourself shaving? Excruciating pain? Or do you notice the blood before you even realize you're cut? The noise of the bow, and of the arrow hitting the ground after it passes through cause more menatl trauma than actually being hit.
A doctor will tell you that cuts made with sharp blades heal faster than those made with dull blades. Animals that don't immediately succumb to the shot are more likely to heal (due to misplaced hits).
On the other hand, the sound of a firearm discharging is more traumatic to the animal than the sound of the bow. Animals that don't immediately succumb are destined to die later, due to infection from the bullet wound. A few days or weeks of suffering, compared to a few days or weeks of healing.
It should be noted that bowhunting has not been shown to result in a drastically higher rate of wounding loss than firearms. It may appear that that's the case though as firearm seasons generally follow bow seasons, allowing some of those animals wounded from bowhunting to be found.
Still, both are probably less traumatic than being pursued and ripped apart by wolves, or dying a lingering death due to malnourishment, or having your habitat destroyed so a housing development or a shopping mall can be built.
On a seperate note-
Any idea how many animals die, or are wounded and left to die a slow death due to automobile hits?
Or the death toll caused by stray housecats?
If your goal is to save animals, it would be better to get people to stop running them over, or stop killing them by destroying their habitat. More animals are affected by that than by hunting. At least hunters utilize the animal after they kill it.

I've been bowhunting several times. Just doesn't do anything for me. Just think how exillerating it would be to get an animal within 5 yards and whack it with a rock.
But like you said, "to each his own".:)
