Title: Went from 512M to 2Gig RAM & AH Hangs
Post by: rauchen on October 24, 2007, 10:25:11 PM
I just changed from 512M DDR to 2Gig DDR2 RAM and Aces High won't run for any length of time.

If the game is running full screen I the computer hangs (does not Alt-Tab or Alt-F4-Delete).

If It's minimized it says AH II has encountered a problem...

Anyone seen this?

First thing that strikes me fella, is you've gone from ddr to ddr2 ram.........an upgrade to a larger ram size shouldnt cause any problems - should just make your pc quicker. Mind, i'm no whiz with memory etc......I'd suggest a full reinstall of the game, making sure you take a backup of your settings folder first.......

Yeah - I'm thinking I may need to do that.  Or at least re-do the video cache gig.

I have an AGP card that will use the RAM and AH may not be able to do it without re-caching the textures or whatever it does when we get a new version.

What IS it doing that takes sooooo long when it's caching the first time?

knitting a blanket I think   :D

I'd check the bios to make sure the memory is being read right. Deleting the video8.cfg file in the Aces High folder will force the game to rebuild the cache.

The saga continues.

It turns out that any 3d game hangs.  I believe my video card is overheating.

If I minimize the 3d game and the video is displaying my 2d desktop it will run indefinitely.

If I run a game when the video card is cool it will run for up to 3 minutes. If I immediately reboot & fire up the game it will go for a few seconds, if at all.

When I set the BIOS RAM speed from Auto to 200mHz I can fly AHII indefinitely (I think).

My next step is to step up the RAM speed in the BIOS until it starts hanging again.

I installed Catalyst Radeon Package and had to uninstall it - I couldn't get the right .Net Framework dll's apparently.  I am not alone.  I had to settle for the updated driver instead.

I'd like to figure out how to monitor my vid card temp & cpu temp. How do I do this?

I have a Radeon AGP 9600 with 128 meg of ram and I just added 2 Gig of 800mHz DDR2 system ram.  I think the video card is straining to keep up.

I'd be happy to hear any opinions or suggestions - I don't want  a new vid card, tho as that means PCIe , new MOBO etc, that I don't have $$ for, unless it's in the $50-$75 range...

First question:  You went from DDR to DDR2?  If so, it is most likely that your pc is not compatible with the DDR2 due to DDR being older than DDR2 and is having a conflict during heavy use.  If your pc is compatible with DDR2, then try removing and reseating the RAM, if not fixed then remove the RAM and swap spots.  Look at the RAM and make sure they are not a mix match set.  A mix match set will sometimes make a pc do weird things.  If all else fails, find someone that has a RAM load tester and run a full load test.  It is possible to get a new stick with a bad or weak chip.

The only DDR/DDR2 motherboards I know of only support DDR-400 and DDR2-667 or DDR-400 and DDR2-533.

So if that's the case, DDR2-800 is probably not compatable with your motherboard.

It would help greatly if you posted which motherboard you have. Otherwise everyone is just guessing.

Sorry - Mobo is ECS P4M800Pro-M.

It accepts 2 sticks of DDR or 2 Sticks DDR2 up to 2 Gig.  There are 4 slots.

You can NOT mix DDR and DDR2 - only one or the other.

I got it working now - I tried setting the speed of the memory and at 400MHZ all is stable.

I downloaded SpeedFan & noticed that when the temp went over 45C the machine locked up. Not sure but I think it's the temp of the CPU.

Thanks for the help everyone!

backing down the speed of the memory will help with the over heating of the video card. if you want full speed of the memory you going to have to upgrade your video card to handle that amount of speed. you said you have 128mb try the 256mb. and they still make video cards for your system. dont know how much one will run you tho.

i could be wrong but from my own problems this is what i have done to fix my problems

There's a good reason why it works at 400Mhz... That's the one it supports, it does not support DDR2 800...

Support DDR400/333 DDR SDRAM or DDR2 533/400 DDR2 SDRAM

Anyway, glad to hear you've got it working.

I upgraded from the 9800 pro, to an ATI X850XT Its an AGP card too (no need to get a new mother board) and I get solid FRs in the game. If you hunt around, you can find them used for $100-$150

I figure I'm good till the next big update in eye candy that comes along  :)

....a very small step. Sure it would be better as the 9800 is a great card, but it wouldn't be much better.
