I guess the Piaggio factory is the most famous landmark in Pontedera, where I live:
This is an old picture of it:
During the war, Piaggio built engine for Italian planes and designed bomber and transport for the Regia Aeronautica, like the P-108:
After the war, it begin production of scooter and bike, the most famous of which is the Vespa (here's one the 80's models):
The Vespa was designed in 1946 by Corradino D'Ascanio, an aeronautical engineer who designed one of the first modern helicopter, in 1930, with a coaxial rotor.
No wonder I grew intoxicated by aircrafts and motorbikes. :D

Cape Henry Lighthouse is located at Cape Henry, a cape on the Atlantic shore of Virginia. Cape Henry is the southern boundary of the entrance to Chesapeake Bay, and is one of the Virginia Capes (along with Cape Charles).
The Cape Henry Lighthouse has long been important for the large amount of ocean-going shipping traffic for the harbors, its rivers, and shipping headed to ports on the Chesapeake Bay. It was the first lighthouse authorized by the U.S. government, dating from 1792. It was also the first federal construction project under the Constitution, for an original contract amount of $15,200 (an additional $2,500 was required to finish the lighthouse).
A newer structure stands nearby, so there are actually two lighthouses at Cape Henry. The older lighthouse was acquired in 1930 by the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (Now APVA Preservation Virginia). A brick lining and an iron stairway have been added to the interior. The lighthouse is open to the public and a fine view can be enjoyed from its observation platform. It was designated a National Historic Landmark on January 29, 1964. In 2002 the American Society of Civil Engineers designated the lighthouse a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
The lighthouses are located in the city of Virginia Beach within the boundaries of Fort Story, an Army base. The Cape Henry Memorial is adjacent to the lighthouses.
While I was assigned to the Electronic Support Detachment in Portsmouth my unit was responsible for the electronic controls and communication equipment at this light house. I've been up inside the thing a bunch of time working on gear. I have also been part of 3 color guards for retirement ceremonies that have taken place at the foot of the light house.

Also have the Cheaspeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.
The Bridge-Tunnel project is a four-lane 20-mile-long vehicular toll crossing of the lower Chesapeake Bay. The facility carries US 13, the main north-south highway on Virginia's Eastern Shore, and provides the only direct link between Virginia's Eastern Shore and south Hampton Roads, Virginia. The crossing consists of a series of low-level trestles interrupted by two approximately one-mile-long tunnels beneath Thimble Shoals and Chesapeake navigation channels. The manmade islands, each approximately 5.25 acres in size, are located at each end of the two tunnels. There are also high level bridges over two other navigation channels: North Channel Bridge and Fisherman Inlet Bridge. Finally, between North Channel and Fisherman Inlet, the facility crosses at-grade over Fisherman Island, a barrier island which includes the Fisherman Island National Wildlife Refuge administered by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Toll collection facilities are located at each end of the facility.
*American Society of Civil Engineers 1965 award for "Outstanding Engineering Achievement"
*Designated "One of Seven Engineering Wonders of the Modern World" in 1965
There are a bunch more I could list but these 2 I have delt with the most.

Well I'm from North Dakota, so the picking is pretty slim.
Lets see you have the "Bend in the road" State Park. Real pretty there with that nice graceful curve.
We have "The Tree" Park, yep, its a tree, and a dandy!
Red River of the North, well if your not into catfish's or rolling around in the mud and muck not much to miss there. Great Catfish river though. Ok to Kayak down, but not much need to do it twice.
Itasca State Park is a couple hours from here over on the Minnesota side. Headwaters of the Mighty Mississippi and all that. Still not too exciting.
I guess nothing much to see, might as well go back to flying AH, LOTS of time to do that up here!

George Bartholemew is celebrated as the man who brought cement and concrete to the Midwest. Called "artificial stone" in the 19th century, the newfangled mixture called concrete hadn't yet been used to pave streets. George convinced the Bellefontaine City Council to try it in 1891 on Court Avenue, around the Logan County Court House. He posted a bond guaranteeing the pavement would last at least five years.
Over one hundred years later, George's concrete street was still there, or at least a city block's worth (the rest had been replaced by more modern paving materials). It's now known as the "World's Oldest Concrete Street" -- signs near the courthouse and along the street proudly make the claim.
In 1991, they erected a statue of George Bartholemew (also the inventor of Portland Cement) in the center of the concrete street, since motor traffic is no longer permitted. So that byway may last a few more centuries....
A plaque points out: "Here started the better roads movement."
The other odd claim to fame: McKinley Street -- named for the President -- is only 15 ft. long, making it the World's Shortest Street. There's a little sign on a pole so you won't miss it.

Midway Airport about a 25 minute walk from my house which is just slightly in the air path of departing and arriving planes. Sometimes prop planes will come by and scare me while playing the game.
I live just North of where the plane is. Your looking east toward the lake in this picture. Central ave. is the first main street you see with all the hangers for some of the richest in Chicago.
The N/W corner is where the Boeing 737 skidded off the runway during a bad snow storm and ended up on central killing a 6 year old boy in a car with his family. The accident occurred the same day as a deadly crash at Midway 33 years ago, when a plane coming in for a landing struck several homes before plowing into one. Forty-five people -- 43 passengers and two in the house -- were killed.
All the Green areas you see are either city parks or schools. To the right or south is a small factory area.
If you were to try and take in and comprehend all that was going on in the area of this picture in the millisecond that it took to take it your head would explode.

I live between heaven and hell, figuratively speaking.
Heaven would be represented by the Sierra Nevada. I would be able to see the highest mountain in the continental US, Mount Whitney (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Mount_Whitney_2003-03-25.jpg), from the window behind my monitor if it weren't for another 14,000+ ft mountain in the way (Langley).
From the same window I can also see Death Valley National Park. My house is 15 miles from the Trona Pinnacles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:01-2007-TronaPinnacles-01.jpg), an area that many movie directors have used to represent hell (example: Star Trek V: The Final Frontier).
And yes, it gets very hot here. Parking lots must have special concrete areas for motorcycles; otherwise their kick stands sink into the melting asphalt and the bikes fall over.

Motherland, I've been to the Gettysburg area twice. The first time was on my honeymoon (I know it sounds wierd but the wife picked the area, not me!) The ghost walk was pretty cool. I don't believe in that sort of stuff, but if you're in town, do as the tourists do. It was a nice night and was fun.
The first time we stayed at the Sheppard Mansion in Hanover (Snyder Pretzels). That was a great little town. Klingers bar was awesome! 300 different beers in stock! The Altland House (Eisenhower's favorite watering hole). There is so much to do in the area, the wife and I had a blast!
We also went back this year for our 5th anniversary. This time we stayed in Liditz. That was another nice little town. It was a little further away from Gettysburg, but the area is very nice to visit. (kids drive like they are in the Daytona 500 though.)
I would highly recommend to anyone that has the chance to visit Gettysburg to do so. The people are friendly, great food, and the area is loaded with history!

At the time it was completed (1927) the the American Insurance Union Citadel (now the LeVeque Tower) was the 5th tallest building in the world, and the tallest between New York and Chicago. It was purposely designed to be 1 foot taller than the Washington Monument, but using modern measuring methods it was determined it is only 3/8 of an inch taller.

Near me one of the most exciting Nov 5th (anniversary of the Stopping the plot to blow up the houses of parliment by Guy Fawks) in UK
http://www.otterytarbarrels.co.uk/gallery.html
An old old tradition hundreds of years old, it attracts 20,000 people and they pack into a tiny devon village and each pub sponsers a Barrel which has been prepared with coal tar inside.
At a set time they set fire to a barrel and leg it up and down the street until the barrel has burned away and they cant hold it anymore.
Is the only place in uk left they do this and quite a spectacle.

Also down 20 miles down the road it may not be a cool mountain or volcano but a massive part of your history:

also locally we have the beach 'Slapton Sands' - it played an important part in the D-Day landings and over 900 US servicemen lost thier lives there during the training exercise 'Operation Tiger' :-(
