I have a CH Flightstick Pro and a CH Throttle Pro both USB. I also have the pedals but most likely will not use them.
I first set these up and used them with IL-2 and had much difficulty doing so. The HAT functions were backwards for one.
Anyway I have been reading here and want to give "Aces High" a try, I think it might be fun. I have just begun to read here and there is much data to absorb. Too much........... :O
Sorry for the rookie question but is it best to install the throttle and joystick with XP first and then try to set them up with the game (single player)?
I don't want to experience the PITA I had when getting these controls to work with IL-2.
Thanks up front.

Yes, actually it is a must. The game only recongnizes the controllers that were installed when the game is loaded up.
This may help: Setting up your controllers (http://trainers.hitechcreations.com/controllers/controllers.htm)
You will likely find you'll need those pedals hooked up also. You'll see what I mean the first time you try to manually take-off.

OK
So install all 3 with Windows Xp then install the game and set them up.

AH will recognise any controllers which are installed in the OS when it starts up. It doesnt matter whether they were installed when you installed AH.
You can map any button to any function in AH, you can reverse the hat functions and so on. It's very versatile.

First of all welcome to AH2. :)
If you want to spend a half hour we can get together and set up your CH controllers. I use the same setup.
Im usually available after 5pm CT and purty much during the weekends.

Ren
That is very kind of you thanks. :)
Let me get the game installed and the controls installed and then I will contact you from here.
It will not be tomorrow hopefully Thursday.
Wanted to mention this is not my first FS experience, but the controls seem a lot more complex then they were back when I played MS CFS online.

You will find the controls will become quite natural even if you do have 19,000 buttons and 8 hats to work with! :) I find setup actually takes approximately 45 minutes as it is a teaching process.
The flying part will be somewhat similar but you will immediately notice improved views as HTC has allowed folks to "shift" their head positions to look around things like headrests and canopy framework. Just like in a real plane you can have a somewhat unrestricted view of the bandit throughout the whole fight. Having unrestrictive view makes a fight a lot more enjoyable as you can actually watch mistakes as they happen and capitolize on them.
As mentioned above you can set views to your liking which is great! However, you must do it for each aircraft you plan to fly. The good news is you only have to do it once. Even with updates to the game the settings remain in place. My suggestion is you pick a plane you'd like to begin with, and we can set up the views and controls. Then as your aircraft choice changes you can spend 5 minutes and setup views for your new ride. After you've adjusted your views on a plane or two doing new planes goes pretty fast.
Controls are a little different. With your new CH gear you can actually take the keyboard out of the flying equation and move to a complete HOTAS setup. Gear, flaps, WEP (War Emergency Power or Firewalling her), airbrakes, ground brakes (differential braking, too!). Mic/radio's, damage report, map controllers, zoom view, guns, bombs(eggs), rockets (rocs), the 3 different type auto pilots, to name a few will be at your fingertips.
Along with push buttons you can also control the sensitivity of your joystick/rudder inputs to suit your individual requirements. We can go so far as to adjust your pitch sensitivity so black out will never be an issue. Rudders can be adjusted to allow additional aiming capabilities. In other words, you don't to have your nose spot on when all you need do is step on a little rudder. Barrel roll offence and defence becomes a simple affair.
All of this can be accomplished in 45 minutes.
Thursday is also a better day for me seein as how we expect lotsa lil ones running up to the door this afternoon and into the evening. I have someone coming over to pick up a day bed Thursday evening. I'm not quite sure when so we may take a 5 minute break somewhere during the setup period. It's already paid for so it just needs to be carried out of the house to his truck. I'd suggest anytime after 5:30 pm CT if that works for you.

Welcome to Aces High Sparx!! [It's about time] :D
Have you seen the profile (http://www.ch-hangar.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4911) I uploaded over at the CH Hangar? That might get you up and going quickly. I put a lot of documentation there to guide you through. Others have told me it was helpful.
Good to see you here my friend!

I just got a CH Fighterstick today. Will you be around the TA this evening and avaiable to help configure it? I am printing out the link you provided earlier of Hammer's tutorial, but it would be nice to have someone knowledgable of the product to help if needed.

Sure was :)

Thanks Ren! Setting up this stick, far more complicated than anything I have had previously, was sure intimidating. Even worse, I have added more fuel to the fire that I am an idiot in that I didn't even snap this wasn't a twisty stick. I either have to take another several months learning how to fly again without a rudder.....or spring for the pedals. My wife, or pedals?
Decisions, decisions......

An interim idea is to use racing pedals as a cheap solution to rudder control until you're ready to spring for flight pedals. I did this for over a year with a $25 pc wheel/pedal controler from wal-mart before I got Ch Pro Pedals.
-
Stoliman,
I went the CH route ~ 8 months back - but did it in two steps. Bought the stick and throttle and programmed the mini-joystick on the throttle as rudder ( Aces High controller mapper "sees" the mini-joystick - just set it to rudder). Flew that way for a couple months 'til I could afford the rudder pedals ( a whole 'nother learning experience). I've had the full CH setup now for ~ 6-months and so far am loving it! You're right though - the twisty-stick is almost intuitive - was the easiest way to get the basics down. The individual rudder pedals (even the mini-joystick), because they are independent of the main joystick will give you much better control ( no cross-talk/inadvertent rudder input) during maneuvering.
Regards,
Optiker

Decisions? Not even a difficult choice...pedals, of course....:) I mean, come on...you've been flying 1.5 years now...wife ack should be rolling off yer back by now....
Seriously, did you fall on yer sword, tell her you made a mistake and you have to get the peds because now you can't fly without them? Also, it's too late to return the stick which is useless without pedals? Huh? Huh?
What about dinner...I tole ya to offer her a meal, too! Bribe the heck outa her... Whatever she wants...kids? Any? Does she want more? The more ya got the better the tax write off! Til college....Suggest kids and sneak out and get vasectomy...:)
Ok, either way come on over to the TA and lets do some work on no pedal fights....
Hope this helps.

ORRRR
he could send her to http://www.maccosmetics.com and let her spend the same amount of money that he does on the pedals. It worked for me :D

About that mini stick.
I use the Ch hotas as well but not sure what I can do with the mini stick . I have recently set it to turn combat trim on and off and use the micro stick trim the plane but it does not stay where i set it. The plane seems to want to climb when off combat trim. Do i have it set wrong and what other applications can I use this stick for?
-
I have the mini stick set to views-move up and down (in place of page up/down) and views-move left and right (in place of arrows). It gives a quick head position change for looking over the nose, or seeing around obsticals.

Stoliman,
When did you wanna meet? This evening?
I will be up prolly around 6:30 or so in the TA for a hour or two then I may migrate over to the MA for an hour or so. We can do it like the last time. Catch me in either arena and I'll come and help you out.
