If I understand right bombs have to drop 1000 before they will explode. Yet I have a video of lancasters at a range of 200 M from my ostwind and the bombs exploding. Is this a bug or what?

Bombs must travel 1000' thats in both the vertical and horizontal planes.

Also I think speed might be a factor?

D200 if directly above means they would be 600 feet above ground, dropping the bombs if they even fell at close to a 45 degree angle would travel close to 1000 feet easily...
you have to remember things dropped at speed travel forward and down.

This is that geometry that they taught you in school and said you'd be using in real life :D

what if you havent had geomitry in school not saying i havent but what if you hadnt
-
You still die from the bomb. :)

Then geomitry doesn't exist. Don't worry about it.

If the alt was 600' and the bombs fell at a 45 DEG angle they would only travel 849'. There fore they would not arm.
I was just wondering how I could be between 2 vehicle hangers when a flight of lancasters flew over, took out both VH's and with me in between and the range to bombers is 200M.
The math is not right.

Bombs do not fall at a 45° angle. They have a parabolic trajectory. The actual flight time and legth of their path is depending on initial altitude & speed of aircraft at drop. 600' altitude may be sufficient if the plane was fast enough. If it is too slow, their trajectory will get steeper, thus too short for the bombs to arm before impact.

They wouldn't fall at a 45 deg angle from the point where they were cut loose to impact. It would start out at 0 deg and start falling away at an ever increasing angle.
I am comfortable with the math, but if you aren't at least you know it's the same for everyone :)

I know that, I did say close... but I didn't want to bother with the math of a parabolic arch as Lusche states below, I figured you would understand that.

exactly, and I don't think anyone in this thread knows enough physics and math combined to calculate the actual numbers of the proposed situation.
there is another fact we are missing here also. in AH icon ranges for enemies are not absolute. they work in stages, and an icon range of D200 could be anywhere from 100 yards to 299 yards from my understanding. 300-499 yards shows as D400... and so on. The bomber in question could have been as much as 897 feet above ground.

I do, as do many others. The formulae are very simple. Off the top of my head i can think of a few formulas that would govern this, but there are a few, relatively minor, variables that would need to be taken into account.
1) Altitude of the aircraft
2) Speed at time of drop
3) angle of attack of aircraft (nose up, the bomb goes farther then level or nose down.)
4) Air density at altitude of drop and density at point of impact
5) Total weight of projectile
6) Drag coefficient of projectile
7) acceleration due to gravity
with those variables, even close approximations, you could get a very good number in terms of total distance traveled. Even without 4, 5 and 6 you could get very close.

:huh
Or you can just LanStuka the place :D
