This is a picture (not original, sorry) of a "Laika" cigarettes pack. 25 kopeykas, paper filter.

She was launched 50 years ago this day.

What makes me uncomfortable: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1920200/posts?page=4#4

"I had heard they the commies sent this dog into space, but what I didn’t know was that they knowingly sacrificed the poor animal to get a leg up on the space race of last century.

Typical Soviet Union mentality."

I'd say - mental midgets. :(

We all know that Laika sacrificed her life to further the knowledge of her loving masters.

She didn't, she _was_ sacrificed.

I don't know, but Laika name appears on a list of dogs who flew "geophisical rockets" in 56-57 at least two times, going up to 100km. Probably she was a real space veteran.

Heres a few interesting facts.  The U.S. space program actually trained chimpanzees to push buttons and pull levers in the space capsules.  When a certain color or light flashed, the chimpanzee was to pull the corresponding lever.  If the chimpanzee did not do what it was supposed to do, it got an electric shock.

Well on the actual space flight of the first chimp in space, the chimp did everything it was supposed to do.  However, something went wrong.  The mechanism that gave electric shocks malfunctioned, and it kept shocking the chimp no matter what it did.  Fortunately the space flight wasn't very long, either 15 or 45 minutes.  When the capsule and chimp were finally recovered, the recovery crews said the chimp was extremely agitated and on the verge of going bezerk.

Now you know I've never been a big Communist supporter (to put it mildly)
but,
C'mon man consider the source.
Look at where you got that

Ya...nice cherry picking that. look at the date that poster joined Free Republic (new poster), then look at various responses to that post.....

It was impossible to do everything in such a short time. No one in either the Soviet Union or America wanted to risk human beings on such an unknown venture. So if they had to use a living thing to test the final frontier - a dog turned out to be the perfect candidate

Whereas the people in this link, are mental giants???http://www.tvdata.ru/catalog.php?dir=11&did=365&lang=eng

If the American SPCA saw this, they would hijack a B-52 loaded with cruise missles, and go to town on every population center in Russia-just to kill that guy. Splicing a puppy onto a dog? Good god, man, you complain about what we did by loading a chimp in a rocket? You guys' had your own Dr. Mengele.
