get a little out of hand? Was paying the insurance and fees and taxes and taxes on fees and such on 4 vehicles... 3 cars and a motorcycle.. seems every month a new bill from some agency or another..
A Lincoln town car.. great for picking up the grand daughter and lending to people and used it yesterday to take the girlfriend to jack london state park... very relaxed.
Austin Healey.. rarely used.. drove it tho.. best taken in small doses.. 331 small block built old school radical... short wheelbase.. 400 hp range... hang on.. worth every penny.
BMW r75.. ride it once in a while... maybe 2 or 3 thousand miles worth of just getting some air.. helmet laws spoil most of the experiance tho.. nice out today.. maybe take a little ride out in the country.
69 El Camino 468 big block.. fairly mild.. 6 speed.. lots of fun.. even has air conditioning.. drive it almost every day.. forget it is fast I drive it so much.
Guns.. a crapload.. shoot one every day in the house... the rest.. maybe get out once or twice a month to shoot.. no time.
reloading.. no time really...
work on the house.. no time really.
After looking at everything I do.. I have decieded that the real problem is work... it gets in the way of my life.
I went in last week and told em I was gonna retire within the year.
I think that will solve a lot of the problem. If.. I don't get too many democrats breathing down my neck.

I wish i could get away with that kind of money Rip :)
Cost of keeping two boats is staggering even without factoring in purchase cost and spreading it out over many many years.

Congrats lazs. If I ever make it to your age I hope I can too. :p

Hole in water...pour cash in. I must admit, my boat costs me 1 can of fogging oil in the fall, and outdrive and engine oil change in the spring+gas, that's it. :aok

Insurance is minimal at my age. SOmething like $200 a year. Of course, I can't sleep overnight on my boat like you can yours! I had gas in my original post, buckeroo! ;) The Suzi 140 uses about 3 gph at 3000 rpm.

Ah sorry, missed that.
I have 2 boats that count (40 and 19 foot) plus a kayak, canoe and a small 12 foot boat with a 4hp engine :) I do not want to count the costs :D
-
Congrats, Laz. A key factor in happy retirement is a lot of interests, and you seem to have plenty. Keep mind and body exercised. And careful with the budget so debt doesn't rear its ugly head.
-
well i used to have a few toys.
i had 4 classic english cars a couple restored and a couple working on.
trouble was the place they were in caught fire and i lost everything, the insurance didnt cover where they were so were null and void.
anyway 18 years of collecting parts and tools and the cars worked out about 30k to replace.
now the hobbies are Ah and computer 3d work.
Enjoy your hobbies why you can cos you never know when craps going to happen
-
I wish I had money with which to have my hobby. I can't wait til I graduate.
-
Is this a "look at all my neat toys and envy me" thread? :D

This little saying is so true...
The two best things about owning a boat are the feeling the day you bought it and the feeling on the day you sell it.
Sold mine 3 years ago, gives me more time to ride. :P
-
Cant live without them. :)
Well... i could get rid of the 3 smaller, but never the other two :D
-
I cross-stitch. It never gets out of hand ~ unless it's intentional.
In fact, I'm fixing to give it up. It strains my eyes now-a-days.
-
I collect Manga
-
What hobbies? I go to school, go to work, or fix one of my friend's cars. You guys need to work more.
-
My new hobby: upskirt cam shots!
-
I save all my CD musics in my 500gb external hard drive, all in .WAV format.
I collect industry-standard headphones... Sony PRO MDR 7506. Next on my list is the SONY PRO MDR 7509 or a high-end Sennheiser.
-
And I write the people i don't like on my Death Note:)
-
Well mine robot project is at the very expensive stage. Motors, batteries, motor controllers, servo-usb controllers and the extensive amount of programming I've been doing...with no end in sight :)
But ah heck, it's a good time.
Here's an older pic..more recent stuff in the link on my sig.

There is a time honored tradition for owners of Boats, RVs or really anything that is more or less a pit - that if you have to ask how much it costs to keep - you cannot afford it. The plane has flown around 450 hours this year, had a Cylinder R&R and a exhaust valve go bad, nothing major otherwise, roughly $14,000 in maintenance that I can account for with Quicken. Insurance, $11,000 give or take a few hundred and the financing part - slightly less then the insurance. ITs actually quite depressing now that I'm thinking about it. Although, I have found a way to keep the cost of doing business down.

I outsource it to my wife! Leeme tell ya - she's a great degrease'r! I've never seen an engine cowling that clean in my life. Next I have to get her to clean the engine compartment. Video is directed below

If I was married to her .... my primary hobby wouldn't involve an engine of any kind. :D

What year SR22 is that?
I've been reading a great deal of good about those lately.
I'm also curious how you like the control stick...I didnt realize they were configured the way they were.
-
Its a SR-20, year 2000 model. The side stick works out pretty good. It has a pretty snappy roll rate of around 60 degrees per second with light control forces of around 5 lbs. Flew it nonstop from the Bay Area up to Seattle in about 3.5 hours using 7 gallons per hour at around 12k and 140 knots true.
Can do San Francisco to Los Angeles in under 2 hours. Its a pretty good and reliable ship.
-
The LifeFlight guys are one door down from me at the hospital. One of the helicopter pilots is an A&P Mechanic and we were chatting about what's fun to fly these days. He told me of friends he has who swear by these planes. Well built, great avionics setup and of course the ballastic parachute just in case.
Darn expensive toy...hope to get to that point someday!
-
It pays its way right now from rentals and isn't being beaten up as a trainer. So roughly $30 per hour maintenance reserve for misc crap has worked out pretty good so far. A lot better then the Seminole or Dutchess the club has online.

Hobbies ARRRG.....

Again Arrgh....
One of these days I'll be retired and then I might have enough time to sleep

Kevin or Gunns or somebody

Gunns,
Question on that steam powered rig. Was it avgas powered, then the steam cycle kicked in or how was it rigged? Reason i'm asking - our engines run hot as it is, CHTs in the high 300s most of the time. So say, instead of a 4 cycle - add an extra cycle and throw some water in there - flash it to steam and recover some of that energy from the cylinders heat. Run the engine a little bit cooler.
Imagine the only problem would be condensation inside the crankcase - and some power settings you wouldn't want to do it at, particularly when 65% or less where the heat isn't as much.
-
I used to have toys and a few hobbies. Then I got married.:(
Obie
-
Actually it is a pure steam engine. The engine has a high pressure cylinder and a low pressure cylinder, steam is supplied from a Doble style generator.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doble_Steam_Car
the aircraft ran on vaporized fuel oil burning at 3000 degrees that was blown through a coil of water. the heated coil flashed the water to steam powered the cylinders and then was condensed and re used.
In my case I am planing on using two 40 HP engines each with a shrouded prop, and will probably need to run at around 500 to 700 psi. Just for Grins my envelope will be "disk" shaped and be around 60 feet in diameter and 20 feet high. (This will need special burners)
Hot air systems are composed of the top end (envelope) and the bottom end (Basket and burners). The plan is to finish the bottom end first, and so have a better idea of how much the top end needs in cubic feet.
for some one who is currently operating an experimental airship, try this link.
http://www.personalblimp.com/
they are currently flying.
Regards,
Kevin

i don't think it can be counted as hobby expenses, since you earn income from this...........
-
Lets see:
car is soaking up costs in tunings
RO is safely keeping me from spending money on PC games then along came FIFA 07 and M&B but they are $30 combined
Then comes 1/6th scale WW2 guys, Mostly eastern front as WW2 American army have boring as heck uniforms.
And in the spring I am buying a 22ftish sailboat. That will also drink the money up.
And Meatwad why do you have Hentai tentacle pr0n involving small boys?:huh
-
arlo... most of the stuff I have.. I have had it for three decades or more... it was cheap back then. I could probly not replace half of it. A lot of hot rod parts and guns were really cheap used back then. surplus guns came in the mail.. stores had em stacked like cordwood and you bought ammo by the pound.
You don't have to spend a lot of money to have hobbies that eat up your time and.. your hobbies don't have to be expensive to eat up your disposable income. AH costs me very little but eats up 15 or so hours every month for instance.
I would think you would know that unless you have no hobbies.
I think that most of us spend most of our time just working tho. I will be very glad to get out. I just have to decide if there is still room in kalifornia to hide from your ilk and live out my life.

Well, let me see...There's my woodworking: currently rebuilding an old oak dining room table, turning new legs on the lathe and working on inlays for the top.
Then there's my music: several thousand dollars worth of guitars, recording studio costs, copyright fees, song-writing contest entry fees, mics. other equipment to support live performances. This last month alone I probably spent $800. Next month, I expect to spend another $1000. And my wife (bless her heart) thought she was doing me a favor when she bought me my first guitar Christmas before last. Seriously though, I am enjoying it nonetheless.
Between the two of them, there's not a lot left in my "fun budget". The wife and four kids tend to soak up the rest of my income pretty effectively.
BTW, if you like country music, check out the new songs posted on my web page: http://www.myspace.com/richowen61 .

Kinda sorta...I pay for my hobby by using my hobby as additional income. It's great when your hobby pays for itself!

Yes! I keep maticulous records, receipts, etc. I get to write off a certain sq. footage of my home, along with a percentage of my vehicle mileage. Marketing, free "photo ops" (charitable donations for BSA) etc. Since we lose our Child tax deductible due to AMT, we make it up with these write offs.

Neubob, thanks, I never even saw those other options up there on the top bar.
Nope, I think I'm not even going to venture a guess on the accent.

My wife's young and russian too, and I've heard that more times than I can count.
After a while, you start to realize that the joke's really on the person telling it.

This kid who used to work for my husband (way back when he was in the Army) was married to the most beautiful Russian lady. I don't think I've ever seen any Russian women that weren't total knock-outs (except for maybe the fake Russian lady in my favorite Wendy's commercial from the early 80s).

Reading and computing -- enjoy all life's thrills vicariously. Throw in a couple good films too. I've been everywhere and done everything, all at a very reasonable cost and in perfect safety, thank you.

I agree unless their parents named them Olga or Ludmilla. Every Russian girl I know named those 95% of them are very big and homely. So if you are of a Russky persuasion do not name your daughters those two names.
