Post by: Redlegs on November 10, 2007, 08:53:09 AM: I did a search and couldn't find any posts concerning this so I figured I'd bring it up. Why does the Sbd-5 only carry a 1000lb and the 2 100lbs when it can carry a 1600lb plus 2 100lb bombs. It would get more usage for this plane, which I have yet to see anyone fly.

Note:725kg = 1600lbs and 45kg = 100lbs

Post by: Saxman on November 10, 2007, 11:48:15 AM: I don't think that bomb load will help it much, except for in scenarios and maybe the Early-War arena. Virtually all the LW American iron STILL carries a heavier ordinance load, at much superior performance.

Post by: MjTalon on November 11, 2007, 12:29:21 AM: I'm a Dive Bomber jock, seeing the SBD with a 1600 pound bomb would boost it's usage more. I currently use the Stuka with either the 1000kg belly bomb and x250kg on the wings.

I use the 1800kg for cv sinking :D .

The SBD-5 could only carry 1200lbs.

The specs they quote are at least partially for the SBD-6.

Here's (http://pwencycl.kgbudge.com/S/b/SBD_Dauntless.htm) a site saying that the SBD-3 could carry a 1600lb bomb.

Post by: Baumer on November 14, 2007, 10:37:05 PM: According to Swaborough & Bowers, in "United States Naval Aircraft since 1911" which is published by the Naval Institute Press, the SBD-5 with the Wright R-1820-60 is capable of carrying up to 1,600 lb under the fuselage and two 325 lb bombs under each wing. An important thing to remember is that bomb weights and bomb "named" weights are different, for example the Mk84 bomb was refered to as a 2000 pounder but could range from 1,972 lb to 2,083 lb depending on configuration.
