Is it legal to hunt and kill deer by spear?
-
It depends where you live, but I doubt it is legal.

Ask Walter!

Many states have primitive weapons seasons that coincide with the bow season times as well. There are no bag or gender limits if I remember correctly for the primitive weapon seasons. Here is the statement of the season times and types of weapons you can use in Alabama.

You can hunt hogs with a spear. They do it with a knife.

I wonder how many hunters are going to try spear hunting, now that it's legal and all. I guess spear hunting is specifically mentioned in the hunting regulations because someone out there is proficient at spear hunting, and to be legal it must be included.
I can't imagine killing a deer that way, but in the woods they do get close, often within 20 yards. Even then, it's hard enough hunting them with a rifle. Deer aren't defenseless at all...in fact they have formidable defenses of hearing, smell and speed. During hunting season, if they smell you, see you or hear you... they're outta there. They must know when hunting season starts, because they become more cautious during that time. Hats off to anyone who can bag one with a spear.

See thats the thing.
Now Im not a hunter.
Never even been hunting.
But Im doing a job where I am seeing ALOT of deer.
Which in and of itself isnt all that odd.
But an event last week got me to thinking.
One day as I get off my ladder and turn around I see a nice buck standing there about 30 feet away.
Call it primal instinct. but my first thought was I wanted to kill and eat it.
And I wanted not to shoot at it with a gun or arrow, but to throw a spear at it and kill it and eat it.
Dont know why. I've seen pleanty of deer before and never gave it any thought or had any similar thoughts before.
But it is the thoughts I've had since.
So I thought I'd ask.

My suggestion is befriend a monkey first.... lol
Interesting question.. other than bow hunting and black powder season I have never checked. But I will soon.

Funny you should mention this trick. A friend *just* showed me how to do it this weekend. I was amazed how well it works.

Yep. I go all out in that area. Works like a charm if you do it right.

Use self rising baking soda only in mating season though.
