Two British traffic patrol officers from North Berwick were involved in an unusual incident while checking for speeding motorists on the A1 Great North Road. One of the officers used a hand-held radar device to check the speed of a vehicle approaching over the crest of a hill, and was surprised when the speed was recorded at over 300 mph.
Their radar suddenly stopped working and the officers were not able to reset it. Just then a deafening roar over the treetops revealed that the radar had in fact latched on to a NATO Tornado fighter jet which was engaged in a low-flying exercise over the Border district, approaching from the North Sea.
Back at police headquarters the chief constable fired off a stiff complaint to the RAF Liaison office.
Back came the reply in true laconic RAF style:
"Thank you for your message, which allows us to complete the file on this incident. You may be interested to know that the tactical computer in the Tornado had detected the presence of, and subsequently locked onto, your hostile radar equipment and automatically sent a jamming signal back to it.
Furthermore, an air-to-ground missile aboard the fully-armed aircraft had also automatically locked onto your equipment. Fortunately the pilot flying the Tornado recognized the situation for what it was, quickly responded to the missile systems alert status, and was able to override the automated defence system before the missile was launched and your hostile radar installation was destroyed."
"hostile radar equipment" lol :lol

First time i ever saw a speed camera some clever person had made it point straight up .
Cant imagine what was said at Oxfordshire police hq when they loked at the pictures , the camera was on a road that followed the Brize Norton approach so all the cops got was VC 10'S and Tri Stars on approach to land :)

Snopes says NOOOOOOOO!

It's a funny joke, but any military pilot would recognize that it's just a joke, not real. The wording in the letter just doesn't make sense.
On the other hand, I've seen fast moving cars show up on my air to air radar before... :)

:lol That's funny, wish I could have seen the look on the officer's face.

hey eagl, would f-15 radar show up on your standard run of the mill fuzz buster?
there has been a few times that i can remember where mines chirped off in strange places and soonafter i've seen one of the -15As out of Otis ahead of me.. coincidence?

Unlikely. I don't think the wavelengths are the same and even if the pure amount of power overloaded the radar detector, it's very unlikely the radar would be pointed right at your car for long enough.
Then again, who knows. A decent electronic countermeasures set will broadcast in a lot of bands and there may be some crossover or harmonic interference. I'm not an EW expert but it seems possible.
That said, in my experience my radar detector only beeps for no reason whenever I drive past cellphone towers or when my cellphone loses it's signal for long enough to go into high power search mode. That makes my radar detector beep every time.

ECM gear receives, analyses, responds automagically if the pilot or EWO has it setup that way.
There's a whole bag of tricks ECM can do.
Point gun at plane, gun stops working ..you wouldnt see a speed indicated, nada .. zip.. the poor gun would just be hosed and would need repair to work again.
That's just one possible result.
There are a lot of others.
Useda be an ex-ECM guy makin stuff outta radio shack bits that would 'do' a number on police speed detection gear.
It's never about how much power the dish puts out ..it's about what the sensor/receiver/analyser will put up with :)
