and to get ahead of the question that likey will follow from SOMEONE --
Ther is a reason we don't have rear view mirrors in AH, and its a practical one. HT has previously said that the 3D calculations for the reversed cone of vision in the mirror would slow the program down Far, Far, Far more than that little bit of eye candy would be worth. Conceptually, it would be like needing to draw 3D graphics for the views of a two headed monster, instead of the 1 headed monsters currently populating the MA.
-
Mirrors weren't invented back then.
-
Almost all fighters had mirrors.
Air Warrior had mirrors and that didn't slow the game down.
IL-2 has mirrors, and that doesn't slow the game down. (There is an IL-2 film out that shows the use of mirrors on a P47)
If Aces High can have 3 dimensional external views on bombers, I don't understand why mirrors would be such a big deal. And I don't understand how Air Warrior could do it, and how IL-2 can do it, but our graphics guys, who have to be better than the others, can't get it done.

I swear certain corsairs had mirrors too.

what were they for? when you were backing up?:noid
-
They don't put mirrors in AH machines because some of us are sooo ugly.... I should not have posted my pic...

Geez Murdr - now you've done it!!
Every time you do that, the whole thread dissolves into an argument....

Mirrors are the devil!:t

No it doesn't!
-
Actually, it's not always as easy as the example I posted. Often times I have to remember how hitech mispelled the keywords to come up with the post I'm looking for :)
-
Thanks for the "search" advice, murdr. I had forgotten how many times I have been around this hoop. I wasted even more time on it when I played Warbirds. There is no point in this thread, obviously, so I am done with it.
Besides, now that I am (a lot) older, I tend to avoid mirrors anway, so getting one in AH is no longer a priority for me. What I really need now is a cane to get to my plane, and some salve for my shingles when I strap in.

I do believe all the "persuit" (p) series planes had them
I know p38, p47's, and p51's had em.
I think corsairs did
but they weren't on the side, they were on the top of the cockpit so it would overlook the pilots back.

I am by no means a computer guru so take this comment with a grain of salt and a ; however, I suggest you go back and compare the graphic detail of old Air Warrior to Aces High. I think that may explain why AW could put a rear view mirror in the cockpit but not in here. Huge difference in graphic resources required to run Aces High.
But, that is just my guess. I could be wrong. I was wrong once before... I thought I had made a mistake, but I was wrong. LOL :D

Im prettysure almost all the allied planes in the pacific had mirrors.

I'm up for a fight.. you fly what ever Spitfire you want and I'll fly my Huri 1. That is assuming your not one of those gay do nothing but BnZ all day types. Those guys put me to sleep. If you turn fight, I'll fight anything with a huri 1.

AW had a mirror on the spitfire but it was only used when selecting the rear view, when what you saw was an enlarged version of the mirror as the whole view. AH has a rear view too ;)

I think mirrors would be a fine addition so players could freshen their makeup after their little purse fights on ch200… :D
-
bubble-top F4Us had a total of three: One hanging from the top and one on each side of the windscreen's support frame.
I DO think mirrors would be nice for times where you have to focus up-front and switching views could be hazardous to your health (like weaving through trees with a bad guy on your six and you're trying to throw off his aim JUST enough to survive while giving your buddy time to scrape him off) but it probably won't happen.

Guyver,
You CAN move your rear view and set it to a less obstructed position....

It's not an issue of whether its possible, it's a matter of tradeoffs. Yes the above games do have mirrored views but they do suffer a performance penalty for that. The degree of that penalty from a programming perspective is a matter of optimization. Optimization is one of those concepts that can take significant time and has diminishing returns.
So the tradeoffs are basically spend time writing code to add the mirrors. Take the performance hit as a result. Spend more time optimizing code to minimize the performance hit...
Are mirrors worth the time investment that could be used elsewhere? HTC has to date thought no.

from the often expressed "purist" point of view, when ya think about it NOT having mirrors on planes that IRL had them is actually just as bad as not getting the FM or performance right..
I use TIR and ironically instead of it being an advantage it is quite the opposite when having to check my 6.. so of course im ALL for adding them..
as for the "performance hit" I dont want to come across as being crass, rude or not understanding..
BUT
AH is far far from what one would considering a "demanding" game as far as what is required to run it at acceptable levels.. if your in a situation where your barely able to run the game at a mid resolution (1024x768) it is TIME TO UPGRADE.. for gods sake your pumping $15 a month into this game for How long now? might aswell run it in all its glory..
here.. drink a few beers, whip out that credit card and go here..

you may wak up regretting what you did last night when you were drunk.. but if your like me.. it wont be the first time

Mirrors won't make any difference when a good pilot is on your 6... :D

AW's graphic detail in the 3D version was considerable, given the computer processors and vid. cards available 7 years ago. Aces High doesn't require that many resources to run, given today's processors and the incredibly fast graphics cards (with plenty of memory) that go into them.
I see no evidence of a performance hit in IL-2 while using the same machine that I play Aces High with. Both games are smooth as silk.
But all of this is moot anyway. There is no way that we will get a mirror view in Aces High. Too bad. It would REALLY add to the immersion experience.
