Title: Catholic Church and 2008

The Catholic Church is urging Catholics in the US to vote on candidates not using their individual preferences or personal morals, but by religious and church doctrine.

Ironically it's not even realistically POSSIBLE, (of the Church's supported positions, the Reps and Dems are split them roughly 50/50 on whether they agree with the Church) but it's a bit disturbing to see the Church try to override the individual choice and conscience of their members to push their own agenda in our government.

Catholicism was not based on individuality to begin with...

Yup.  Are you really that surprised that a religion would wish to have that kind of influence over its members?

Pat Robertson, et al, and their flocks have been doing it for years. The Catholic Church must be playing catch up.

disturbing, yes.  surprising, no.  I say strip 'em of their tax-exempt status, that'll learn 'em.

Most Catholics will vote for which ever candidate they want. They are not as "whacky" as the Evangelicals.

I'm Catholic. I don't care what religion they are, I like their ideas I'll vote for them.

doubt this will influence many.

Doesn't seem any crazier than voting straight down a party line, which plenty of folks here do, if I recall correctly.  Seems pretty reasonable, my only concern would be if their tax free status was used to power a campaigning platform.  Seems like a conflict of interest that way.  Same if federal funds (ala, 'faith based initiative' money) were used.

But as community centers of like minded people...    Why should they be restricted?  This doesn't look like direct church control of government, just looks like awareness and use of the democratic system, the same thing anyone can do.

I, too, am a Catholic.

When they punish their pedophile priests with the same zeal as the Spanish Inquisition, only then might I lend them my ear to their "wishes".

Catholics will have hard time when voting for prez.

They want someone who will help the poor, and improve the state of health care.  (Democratic position)

At the same time, they want to put an end to abortion and ghey marriage (republican position)

Every sperm is sacred,
Every sperm is great.
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate.

Telling people to vote based on what they value is fine, I would expect nothing less. That includes defining those values. Telling them specifically who to vote for is crossing the line.

I don’t see what the problem is; people who want to vote with their church in mind, can.  If Greenpeace, a union, a gay group or even Paris Hilton want to recommend how to vote I wouldn’t care either.

I've never been able to put the catholic view on any political party.  Interesting points tho.  I think you'll find other religons out there that are more rigid in their political view than us.
