I dont think its so much the salt water but the air and temperature. Lots of things have been found in the ocean after alot longer than 65 years and some of it looks ok. Probably wont be rebuildable to flying condition

This was posted on the S.A.P.P not to long ago. Pretty cool that it is actualy a P-38F.

Pretty cool story and nice find.
I know its a bit off topic but..
The Imperial War Museum Duxford and the Royal Air Force Museum are among the institutions expressing interest.
The difficult part is to keep such a dramatic discovery secret. Looting of historic wrecks, aircraft or ships, is a major problem, in Britain as it is worldwide," Gillespie said.
Now I like and respect museums and understand what they are trying to do. But their arrogance and statements like this sometimes annoys me.
Why is it whenever it seems something historical is found that they seem to automatically think it belongs to them? And they call anyone that might try to get it instead of them "looters"?
I've seen similar statements on other finds. some of them on private property, where the property owners took some things for themselves and the site was referred to as being "looted"
There is one story in particular that comes to mind (though I forget the exact when and where) in America with some dinosaur fossels where some fossels were taken by the landowner.
They seem to act as though they are the only ones who should be allowed to touch, hold, look at, or more importantly possess such things.
That one in particular irks me because its not like they dont have plenty of their own.
think about it.
when you go to a museum. for every item you see and find interesting, there are propobly 100 other items locked away in a drawer or on some shelf that would be just as interesting to look at.
Its this arrogance that leads me to think that if I ever found something.. like say a skul;l of a dino. they'd be lucky if I even told them about it let alone look at or have it.."on loan"

The story is from Fox News. I refuse to read it and it must be utter rubbish.

Yea but soon as they take it out of that environment, that's when it will start the deterioration process and it will happen pretty fast. It's the reason why they put cannons and other aritfacts recovered from salt water in salt water tanks after they are first recovered.
It takes a while to reverse the process.. Gold is the only thing that is not affected from saltwater. It will be pretty hard to restore a plane like that that was in salt water.

it takes you to the forum but doesnt allow the link

This reminds me of the P-38 squadron that was found buried under 268ft of ice in Greenland after making an emergency landing while going from the U.S to England via a route from Canada to Greenland, to Iceland, and on to England. Very interesting story, I saw a documentary on T.V about it, here's a website with info on it.
Another interesting fact is they actually got the one they recovered back in flying condition after being buried under ice for all those years.

"Glacier Girl" was the name of the 38, they tried the same flight after she was restored and developed engine trouble, IIRC, not sure if they finished the fight finally.

I hope they restore that p38 bomber to musem condition atleast. Canada should be proud to have designed and buildt such a pretty bomber and its Rolls Royce engines sounds fantastic. Some say its the granddaughter of the F16 Eagle, but as the P38 is twin engined id say its the grandson of the F15 Fighting Falcon or maybe the F-4 Tomcat.
They are ofcourse all copies of russian designs.
