Title: Microphone input went dead...
Post by: oboe on November 17, 2007, 11:45:17 AM
Hi all,

The mic input on my onboard sound card went dead recently.   I have a Asus P4P800 motherboard - been running this computer for a few years without problems.

I tried a different microphone and have reinstalled the audio drivers but it makes no difference.   Audio output is fine.

A month ago I installed a new video card and added another gig of RAM, but the mike input just went out in the last week or so.

Can anyone suggest a next step for troubleshooting, or have some idea what the problem might be?

btw, I get two short beeps on POST boot up now, but the Asus manual doesn't describe any beep codes.   I think I noticed these beeps before the mike input went dead, but ignored them because everything seemed to be working OK.

Thanks for you help.

For the beep codes: http://www.helpwithpcs.com/upgrading/post-beep-codes.htm

Seems as though your RAM isn't seated correctly or is going bad.

As for the input jack, it sounds like a simple hardware failure. If it's onboard sound, you can't expect much from a (literally) $.02 piece of PCB that steals your system RAM and CPU. Sound cards aren't very expensive and have their own onboard RAM and CPU, meaning less drain on your system.

Thanks for your reply, Ooz.   After poking around a bit more, I found a couple posts on a board that indicate on older BIOS, the beeps tell the number of USB devices hooked up at boot time.   2 beeps would match correctly.

Is there another way I can check the memory?    Does DOS emulation support an memory check utility?

Well, I said that because of the beep code, but you figured that out. :) If you want to check your RAM and run it through some tests, do a search for MemTest86+.

Go here and download the bootable ISO for Memtest86 (http://www.memtest86.com/)

The program runs automatically by itself on boot.  If you get even one error, replace the memory.

Now, I wouldn't say that. I got four errors on an overnight run with this memory and since I've run the test, I've never had an issue.
