Title: Elementary education for squeakers
Post by: Neubob on November 18, 2007, 12:14:18 AM
I've noticed that the newest batch of teenagers doesn't just lack basic spelling skills, but has completely turned its collective back on punctuation too. I won't even start on grammar, because that ship has evidently sailed and sunk years ago.

I blame this problem mostly on modern communication trends, namely the current obsession with text and instant messaging--two things I use on a daily basis myself but never had available as a child.

My wish is that AH somehow fixes this. Make the squeakers less ignorant... please? Teach them to use letters to make proper words, and words to create readable, recognizable human speech. If necessary, make them sound it out.

And do teach them that those funny dots found at the ends sentences are only their to help. Teach them that commas are not to be feared! Teach them that they will NOT get more women, or automatically be handed a career in hip hop just because they sound like they learned English in prison, or worse, on AIM.

For the love of god, please please please....

Don't group as all together. It never seemed to be a problem for me and I'm only 16. Then again I blame cellphones, no means of typing should be done with just thumbs. :rofl

I found this interesting.

When you dial a telephone, do you use your index finger, or your thumb?

If you are 35-40yrs old or older, you probably use your index finger.

If you are 30-35yrs old or younger, you probably use your thumb.

I've never seen anybody use their index finger to dial on a cellphone, nor have I see anybody do it on a cordless. It's impractical because it uses both hands.

I can still remember actually "dialling" the telephone number.
Having said that I use my thumb these days.:aok

Raider, think of it this way.

In order for anyone else, to truly understand what it is you think, believe, etc.
You must be able to communicate with them intelligently. That is to use the same STANDARD of communication. Same with 2 computers communicating.

Without a minimum basic standard for comprehension, there is no communication.

Without basic spelling, punctuation, sentence structure no one is going to understand what you have to say.

You could be Einstein, and no one would care or listen to what you have to say.
If you want to be heard, and understood you need to follow the rules.

Math is the language of sciences, and language is paramount to any success in any work you would do in the sciences, for the reasons Ghost points out. Math is the last place you want to make syntaxical or spelling errors. The more languages you learn, the easier science and math get.  Just take English Grammar as a good cheap little practice to ace before you start with the real thing.
Saying something is boring is one of the worst things you could say about yourself.

Yeah, pretty shameful... But I will explain the anatomy of the mistake.

The original sentence was: 'and please do teach them that those funny dots at the ends of sentences are their friends, and not to be feared.'

Then I edited the sentence to read as it does now, but being as drunk as I was, let it slip past.

Still no excuse. I will administer self-lashings as prescribed by the official Grammar Nazi's handbook.

Lol..

As young as I am, I've come to acknowledge that even though grammar and spelling are two very basic and important facets of expression, not being good at either, in most cases, only means people around you may get a little chuckle because of you; but that you can still go ahead and lead a very productive life with many achievements.

Whether that's owning and operating your own business, being a manager of a large company or even head of a corporation.

Again, with the people around you knowing that you are only human, taking both your weakness's and strengths into consideration.

Do, at least, achieve the basics in grammar. Leave the rest to spell-check and your wife ;)

That's very poetic, tattered.

However, I don't know how much reality there is in your optimism. There may well be some CEOs out there who don't know enough not to use a double negative in their formal writings, but I bet they are in the minority... As are managers and business owners who cannot string together a proper paragraph. Business plans that are written in poor english won't get the attention of venture capitalists, and for good reason. Managers that can't put together a decently-written quarterly report will get replaced--unless of course their bosses are equally ignorant.

Proper language is very basic, as you said. Failure to master such a basic thing speaks volumes about a person's overall aptitude and work ethic. In a world where competition is as intense as it is, why bother going with the guy who is competent but can't speak or write well, when you can get a guy who is both capable and coherent? It's much like personal hygiene, actually--not necessarily essential to the business at hand, but without it, you generally wouldn't get in the door... If that little chuckle you mentioned occurred during the interview, I doubt it would be much of a laughing matter for the person seeking the position.

For a native English speaker, I just don't see an excuse--especially when so many foreign-born Americans have mastery of our language.

Amen!

One thing I've seen demonstrated many times during the 20+ years I've spent in IT is that folks who cannot express themselves well in a "natural" language (e.g., English) generally do not do very well at expressing themselves in a computer language.

Not just for the sake of a counterpoint, but because it's actualy a common trait... I'm employed right now by a construction tycoon who got there by being autodidact and armed with nothing but ambition and self-reliance.  No fancy diplomas, just a beater car with a cement spinner on the back and years of effort.  Now he can afford to tour the world every few weeks, he's gone everywhere but the poles and knows some places e.g. cambodia like the back of his hand.
And he still makes spelling mistakes.. Like HiTech.

Bino, I've also noticed that people who easily learn new languages, or at least speak a few different ones, will learn new disciplines muc more efficiently, especialy those like chemistry and programing that rely on nomenclature a lot.  It might seem like common sense, but from what I've seen it's a definite corelation.

Moot, while a certain resentment for the conventions of proper grammar may be exhibited by some self-made mavericks of the business world, I don't think that it is, nor should it be, a rule for the masses. If I were hiring an employee for a job with any more responsibility than those of a janitor, I would NOT make my decision based on mastery of the English language (unless I was hiring a lawyer). However, given a choice between two otherwise equally qualified candidates, I would choose the one who can write properly. Nothing fancy, just nothing atrocious.

Most Americans do not speak a second language. They should at the very least master their own--both in written as well as in spoken form. I learned English as a second language. I do not see why those born here cannot do the same. There is no way it can hurt... At the same time, there is no way that the inability to communicate properly can help.

Even in the world of Hip Hop, where little if any premium is placed on good grammar you will note that the richest, most successful figures (Sean Combs, Jay Z, Russell Simmons, LA Reid) KNOW how to communicate according to the laws of the language. Being 'down' and 'hip' and 'keeping it real' is something they all do, but when business comes to business, they are still the most coherent of the bunch.

Yup, A' reckon we agree on the finer points here bob! :D
I wasn't apologizing for the masses' illiterate tendencies so much as pointing out the only pertinent counter-example I could think of...

There's a diametrical opposition between birdbrain intellectual couch potatoes and people who had to skip from sophisticated superfluities to brass tacks... The difference is always very obvious.  The latter's lucid and the former is not.

I understand, moot.

As somebody with a bit of the entrepreneurial mindset, I was always quick to shun the establishment in favor of the creative spirit. Nevertheless, society is society, and if there's something that must be done, I figure it might as well be done well and with pride, or at least with competence.

Your writing, by the way, is a pleasure to read. Somewhat of a rarity on these boards.

If English is your first language you need to rethink your priorities.  Myself, I never use periods when I instant message and hardly ever capitalize.  That being said, I always do both when e mailing/writing on the BBS or other more formal places in which I have time to do such things (yes, periods and capitalization take too long:rolleyes: ).

Strangely, my mom writes letters to me, handwritten letters, using text messaging shorthand.  It's like a whole other language.

Actually, I think that you're what's commonly termed as 'functionally illiterate'. Sure, you can get by, but you're about as proficient at written english as a registered nurse would be at brainsurgery--somewhat but still not significantly better than somebody who is completely without skill.

I'm not saying that you need to be Shakespeare or anything like that, but unless you learn that sometimes you need to master skills you don't like, you'll end up pumping gas.

To the point, I was taking honors English credits in college and there were a number of post-secondary students in the class as well.  I was horrified at the quality, or lack there of, of the work that these students presented.  Presumably to be in the PSEO program you are achieving above high school level to enter; if they were the cream of the crop, so to speak, then I am worried.

That's how I type; I say 'wut' instead of 'what' and lol. That took me all of 3 minutes, it would have probably taken me less time but I had to decode what you actually said. It isn't really that hard to type properly.
I don't really mind the lack of apostrophies (sp?) and minor grammatical/spelling errors, but when people don't even try, it gets annoying.

There is a simple reason to use proper grammar and spelling. Since we all play Aces High I'll use it as an example. How many times to you see a thread that is plagued with misspellings, improper grammar and the works get taken seriously? Chances are they never are because if you can't display your idea in an organized, clean fashion, it's going to find its way to the drain pretty fast.

I'm just not as smart as most people in english. The reason is because I don't try as hard as I should. I'm better with numbers then with grammar. The reason could be that i started to drink A little when I was 12. I only drink on New Years, and 4th of July. But I don't like to ask teachers for help becuase then it feels like people will laugh. That could be my problem that i don't look for help or ask. I'm not really sure what it is with grammar and me. When i try i'll actually do much better. I don't try often but when I do I get a good grade on the subject, i just don't have restrictions and punishments. Also no parental vision at home so I do what I please. I'm slowly getting more responsible but I'm 14 so it may take a couple years. I only try in the classes that i want to do good in, which should be all my classes but only classes I try in are Team Sports(gym), Math, Science, and Spanish.

If your passing english at all, you should be able to form a coherent sentence. Which you dont, most of the time.
I honestly dont try in any of my classes, but I still ace all of them (well, not this quarter, didnt do enough homework. I usually do just enough homework to get by, then ace tests... but I only got like 85's on my tests... so... yeah...) but thats just me. Learning has come naturally and easy for me, mainly because I always enjoy broadening my knowledge on various subjects (which has brought me to war/history, which is by far most interesting, and ultimately to Aces High). So there you go. If your passing 8th grade or highschool english, you have no excuse to not be able to form coherent sentences.

Typing like a complete tard on the internet is like showering once a month and dressing like a hobo in real life. People will not look beyond it and why should they? If you don't care enough about yourself and what you have to say to present it in a fairly decent manner, we won't care about you or what you have to say.

we are not asking for perfect English. Just be coherent, and firefox has a built in spell checker...use it.

I have a hard time sitting here while a teenager acts flippant about his education, especially when it revolves around his lack of desire to communicate on an intelligent level.  Writing is so easy when compared to the rest of the topics you will cover in your education.  Poor grammar is inexcusable, but add to that the excuses and the weak justifications and all it does is demonstrate just how foolish you are.  Don't you dare try and pass your poor English skills off on anything but your own academic laziness.  You seem like a smart kid who is just acting stupid.

While I do agree that spelling and punctuation can be important and I believe they have taken a real down turn in todays world, I don't think that they are the do all and end all...

Take my dad as an example. He holds 3 degrees, 1 in weather that being his job in the Air Force. One in Geology and was in that field for over 20 years and has graduated at the top of his class a couple years ago in nursing and now has a job with the state.  Now to some of you I'll bet a degree in nursing dosn't sound like much but have seen the work he had to do in those classes most of it I couldn't possibly understand and to come in top of his class at 57 years old I think was a great show of his intelligence.

How ever he has to be one of the worst users of spelling, punctuation and grammar that I know, me coming in a close second :).  He's constantly asking my mom how to spell things and we keep correcting his constant use of the word them, as in "Them things" :)

If employers base to much of their decision to hire someone on the fact that they arn't great at spelling, punctuation or grammar I think they could be missing out on some of the most intellegent and well quallified people for the position being offered.

Another point I have is when I read a book or what have you I totally ignor all the punctuation in the thing. I don't need a . at the end of a scentance to tell me that is the end of what someone is saying or an ! to tell me someone in the story is excited or yelling or the ? to tell me they are asking a question. To tell the truth I don't even see them when I read. It's kinda like listening to someone speak, when people talk they don't say period, exclamation point and question mark after everything they say.   For me it's just common scence to know these things when I read. Though I do belive that others seem to rely on these to tell them things that I understand without them. I think it's just a difference in the way people think.

Well these are my thoughts on the matter and mind you I'm in no way saying that these things shouldn't be tought...   You may now poke fun at my spelling, punctuation and grammar. :)

As evidenced by your own hand, grammar is very difficult to master. (See highlighted text in your quote, it should say "there")

I look at it this way.  I bet these folks don’t really write like that, they are just lazy.  My wish would be to figure out a way to get kids to understand working for something is a success of its own and any cheap way to success isn’t a success.

Yeah, I think I provided an acknowledgment of that mistake earlier on in this thread. It was the result of a poorly proofread edit, and not intentional.

Language should be second nature--like walking. People who can't walk right are considered handicapped. The only difference here is that a person can always fix their problem through practice.

Yea, i hear i you, but i wouldn't say teenagers as a group. A lot of people that cant spell anything are adults, and the biggest portion are the 5-10 year old squeakers. I don't, well at least i don't think, I spell anything wrong. Sometimes people just abbreviate words so they will fit in the small radio box AH gives us.

Oh yea, the comma thing in that paragraph would fall under that grammar ship that sunk. I don't ever see people use commas in their sentences on AH. A lot of the time not on the forum either. Mainly, because they are complicated to use and there are so many that can go all over the place. I'm willing to bet that I have misplaced some of my commas.

And remember Cmustard's famous quote, " Spelinge dos not mattar, its wats inside."

It is one thing to 'act' stupid and have people laugh with you.  I, for one, am not only a fan of such behavior but have perfected the art.

That said when I converse with Subway, Oogly, and Latrobe, I do not consider them my mental inferior and actually give credence to their point of view.  Not only because they spell correctly and make attempts to punctuate their posts but because of the way they comport themselves in a mixed environment.  In fact the first time I had a pm conversation with Latrobe I had no idea he was so young.  I could have been talking to people I associate with in the business world every day.  That says a lot about not only these young men but about their parents as well at least in my eyes.

Bottom line is if you want to be taken seriously by anybody other than the people in  your age range / demographic it is imperative that you attempt to express yourself in a manner that shows you have not only intelligence but the social skills to express yourself in an acceptable form.

It is one thing to abbreviate words for the sake of convenience when text messaging someone on a cell phone (which I abhor but will not discuss further here) and on a written communique with a full functioning keyboard especially if English is your first language.

Lastly describing yourself as 'class clown' and 'lazy' does not bode well for your future young man.  I hope you have some manual labor skills when you graduate or you may be setting yourself up for some hard times in the future.

Today's class clown will become tomorrow's village idiot

I been around my share of class clowns. To me, they look and act just like mentally retarded individuals that forgot to take their daily medication.

And if they claim they dont want to do *insert task here* because they are lazy, then I hate to see what their parents are like. He has a bright future ahead of him of mooching off welfare because he is too lazy to go out and get a job

Here's a real world example for the 12-25 yrd old folks here:

In my last job I had to interview people to fill in a couple of entry-level positions. No experience was necessary, only minimal computer skills needed (aka you know how to open a program in windows and you had to be familiar with Outlook and MS Word) and a high school diploma.

I received 30 something applications for the positions. All applicants were between 18 and 25.

I'm not the type to interview people to ask them questions that I can be lied to about.. i'm a practical person. My interviews gave the applicant a hypothetical scenario and asked them to get on the computer/phone and show me or guide me through the steps he/she would take to try and deal with the issue.

As I worked for a travel agency, the scenario I used for that batch was a simple problem of a client being overseas and the hotel he had booked through our company could not find his reservation and the hotel claimed that our company had never made a reservation for this client. After giving the scenario to the applicant I told them that our system received e-mail confirmations from the hotel itself on a daily basis and that he could find a copy of that email on the outlook program and that usually what we did was send a copy of that email to the hotel manager to get this resolved.

note: spell check was disabled on the system.

And that is when I could really see the applicant's true skills at work.

Out of the 30 something applicants, 4 couldn't use Outlook (but claimed they could in their resume), about 12 of them simply attached a copy of the hotel's confirmation email, typed in the subject 'here's the confirmation email' and clicked 'send' (out of those 12 only a few bothered to put anything in the body of the email).

Those 16 people I immediately dropped from my list.

The remaining 14 people put in a decent subject 'title' on the email, attached the file and wrote a short letter to the hotel manager. Which is exactly what I was looking for.

However, we only had 3 positions open. Out of those 14 I gave the jobs to the 3 that had the best spelling and grammar (some of those had horrible spelling and some sentences made no sense).

Instant messaging / text messaging spelling and grammar does not work in a business environment. You may think that you can 'switch' to professional way of writing when you need it but it is not true. Once instant messaging -type spelling becomes a habit it will become the way you write and express yourself.

I cannot tell you how many emails from travel agencies and clients around the world I would receive on a daily basis that had 'lol' and :) signs all over the place .. and this was on legally binding BUSINESS agreements over email.

I fail to see the point of usuing grammer on chat programs or AH due to the fact I dont have a lot of time to type something that someone can read just as fast minus a few letters, granted I have bad grammer and I dial with two hands, But forums/e-mails/written letters ect. yes grammer and punctuation is needed so it's not a huge big a** sentance.

EDIT - holy crap didn't notice this was 3 pages long.... my god we must be a bored crowd.

i'm the same way...though since its getting cold out, a nice warm indoor job is looking real nice.

sure, but why be lazy and do poorly at school when with a minimal improvement in effort you can do a heckuva lot better, and keep other options open?

its like framing a wall with all the studs close enough, when you can have it perfect with a few minutes of work.

and, spelling is a lot like framing walls in that its actually faster and easier, and makes you look better, if you get in the habit of doing it right.

Yeah, I'd have to concur with Clerick.

You're a jock now, and you work out all the time and grunt and make all sorts of manly sounds while you bang helmets and shower with your buddies. Now flash forward 10 years...

Your athletic abilities weren't enough to get you into college, to say nothing of the Pros, and since you spent no time investing in your brain, and have a ripening drinking habit, you body is gradually turning into a bag of water and fat.

You have no skills, no ambition, no drive to do anything but put back a case of beer every weekend. You're invisible to the girls, who are now old enough to know that they want a guy with a future, as well as invisible to most employers. Your options include work at a diner, or on the lawn of man who owns a nice house and property--stuff you'll never have for yourself.

Then one day you run into that man with the lawn and somehow, through the thick jungle of cobwebs that your mind has turned into, you realize exactly who and what he is.

"I played football in highschool." You say with pride, pointing out the old jersey that you're still wearing.

"I was too skinny to play football." The man replied with a nod. "Spent most of my time messing around with computers."

If this scenario doesn't worry you at all, it's all the more inevitable that it or something close to it becomes reality.

Don't worry Raider, it's only the junior and senior year that colleges actually care about...:lol .  Seriously though, do you know what happens to kids in my school district who screwed around and thought they had "3 years"?  They go to a very special school in their senior year or second semester of their senior year because they didn't have the brains to think that 3 years goes by in a flash.  Think back to elementary, it seems like it was just yesterday that I was in 5th grade running around on the playground.  Now I'm in my senior year, I need 2 credits to graduate (done at semester) and I'll ship off to boot camp in 61 days.

I didn't have a plan until the 3rd quarter of my junior year so don't let that get you down, just understand that school should be your priority before football, girls, and especially drinking.  Actually, kill the drinking completely right now and don't even think about starting to puff on anything with a lit tip.

Then again it's your life, do with it what you will.

EDIT: Subway, put those fingers down or go to the 'hood and see what they make of your hand gestures.  Same applies to you as Raider.

Raider,

Your G/F looks like a cheap tramp. Men with receding hairlines will be trying to pick her up in their Porsches a decade from now. They'll succeed too. On a regular basis. God forbid she ever meets a guy with a Ferrari.

The closest you're gonna get to a ferrari is maybe waxing one down at the local hand-wash.

As for everything else--you'll be life's ***** before you know it. Your generation has it's work cut out for it, and guys like you aren't helping. Leave the cheap potatos for later. If you have a job, and a life, they'll come around soon enough. Otherwise, buddy, count these years as the best of your life. They'll be over before you know it.

I have observed that many people who learn English as a second language at a later age will often speak and write in a manner that is generally more correct than those who learnt it as a child and have grown to become complacent with it.

That is obvious.
Don't you think you owe it to yourself to do your best? If your parents are as bad as you say, then get revenge.
The best form of revenge is SUCCESS. Pull your socks up and get cracking, work hard and later in life you will be able to extend your successful wealthy middle finger in their direction rather than just chuckling your empties at them.

Use an Agenda/planer/something to write down your homework. It helps.

BTW: how long are your school's classes?

EDIT: And welcome to High School, and you think your freshman years are hard homework wise. Wait till you get in your upper class years!/College

Highschool is hard? Are you kidding me?

It's hard if you're braindead, or if you're chronically truant. If you come to school regularly and do a reasonable job of doing your work, it's just a 4 year vacation with reading breaks.

And if it wasn't for the free access to drugs, alcohol, and the lax approach to attendance, college would just be an extension of that vacation.

You want hard? Go to Medical School or, to a lesser degree, Law School.

If you can't handle 9th grade, be it due to ADD, lack of discipline, or plain and simple stupidity, you're in bad shape.

So what's the plan for when you graduate from this career center?

Do you go to college with real work experience or is the idea to go straight into a job?

Well, that's probably more serious than most college curricula--since you're actually being prepared for something. Either way, I somehow doubt that the situation Raider is complaining about has much in common with yours.

Firefox will not slow down your machine, per se...

Get in the habit of shutting down unneeded processes to conserve RAM.

I don't plan to stay back in highschool so i'm going to try my hardest in every class and try to work on doing my Homework after school before i do anything. Also i'm going to do 1 sport a season so i stay out of trouble last year in 8th grade i just did footbal and got in lots of trouble out of school afte the season, and my grades went down after the season.

YOU KNOW YOU'RE GETTING 'MARVELOUSLY MATURE' WHEN.............

1. You and your teeth don't sleep together.
2. Your try to straighten out the wrinkles in your socks and discover you aren't wearing any.
3. At the breakfast table you hear snap, crackle, pop and you're not eating cereal.
4. Your back goes out but you stay home.
5. When you wake up looking like your driver's license picture.
6. It takes two tries to get up from the couch.
7. When your idea of a night out is sitting on the patio.
8. When happy hour is a nap.
9. When you're on vacation and your energy runs out before your money does..
10. When you say something to your kids that your mother said to you and you always hated it.
11. When all you want for your birthday is to not be reminded of your age.
12. When you step off a curb and look down one more time to make sure the street is still there.
13. Your idea of weight lifting is standing up.
14. It takes longer to rest than it did to get tired.
15. Your memory is shorter and your complaining lasts longer.
16. Your address book has mostly names that start with Dr.
17. You sit in a rocking chair and can't get it going.
18. The pharmacist has become your new best friend.
19. Getting "lucky" means you found your car in the parking lot.
20. The twinkle in your eye is merely a reflection from the sun on your bifocals.
21. It takes twice as long - to look half as good.
22. Everything hurts, and what doesn't hurt - doesn't work.
23. You look for your glasses for half an hour and they were on your head the whole time.
24. You sink your teeth into a steak - and they stay there.
25. You give up all your bad habits and still don't feel good.
26. You have more patience, but it is actually that you just don't care anymore.
27. You finally get your head together and your body starts falling apart.
28. You wonder how you could be over the hill when you don't even remember being on top of it

I have been reading this thread and laughing a lot. Maybe i can add something, and not detract from what has already been said.

When i was in school, way back in the 90's english and litterature were about the easiest classes form me to pass. I have always had a more creative than analytical mind, and math; man i just could not understand
algebra two. Now i am actualy trying to write this right but the internet has courrupted me.
Spelling is very easy for me, hitting the right keys on the keyboard with only six fingers is very very frustrating.
So yes i have adopted chat speak, because it does not make my wrist and hands hurt.
Well anyway back to school, i was one of those very inteligent but not trying kids. i was very depresed throughout high school so bad that it got to the point i wanted to die.

I now realized that i settled for F#%&ing my future.
My junior year was the worst, i was trying to work two jobs, and go to school. That's no excuse though; because i was also trying to get laid, smoked up on some good weed, drunk and anything else teenagers do.
So anyway they worked it so that i was not held back. iI just went into easy classes like senior math and home ec. I had two classes that I had to pass, even with a full schedule. So I stupidly went home everyday after second period and managed to kill what little gpa i had.

i "graduated" in 1999, got a girl pregnant (who eventualy lost the child) and just this year went back into school. I still don't know what i want to do but at least I'm doing something. I'm 27 now and still live with my mom, all I do is work, school and play on the computer; I've not spoken with a female in six months, I just do not have the time to waste.

I know that you younger people know everything already, i did.
I'm just trying to give you an example of my own expereinces.
But i will tell you this, even after all that i am a much more happy person than i was in high school.
I am still antisocial but slightlt more "well adjusted".
It took me all these years to deal with my personal problems, and even though im in good shape now i still wish i hadn't been such a f##K up in high shcool and my early 20's.

Sorry for the long preaching post, if i do it again you have permision to stone me.

p.s. that took about 15 minutes to write and ten to fix.
I am very capable of writing readable english (not perfect)
i just perfer not to put myself to the trouble and pain of doing it all the time.
And if anyone thinks this typing is too bad please do not ask me to write anything by hand which i can not do.

Yeah thought i would post a little joke. But well grammar is hardest for me math is easy and science is  simple for me. I think i just like to do things in school that i think are fun English class is the least of all the fun things. But hey its high school i shouldn't be having fun at all. I'll try but i don't think I'm going to start to like English class much more then I do now.

yes some people love math and hate english.
i loved shakespeare and poetry more than anything else, biology was cool because i got to cut things open and find out how they work.
Auto shop and carpentry were fun untill i had a problem with a band saw in 10th grade.

OK this is My Schedule

Block    class
A         Team Sports (gym)

B         Environmental Science

C         Algebra 1

D         English

E         World History

F          Spanish

my grades are all C's except in Team Sports because I'm very athletic. I love science and math because i love working with numbers and learning about are world and other worlds as well as the organism's in them. English seems boring to me because i dislike reading what she chooses. I'm into war books and action and she makes us read Poems books and Greek mythology

Sentence structure is not that hard to get a handle on. Here's an exercise you can use to help you get a start on understanding the concept. Once you have a handle on the basics you can then move on to the more advanced stuff.
First write out what you want to say, then read it out loud like you are saying it to someone.
Take note of where you pause, that's a comma. Where do you stop before you begin another part? That's a full stop. Depending on the placement, a breath can be a comma or a full stop. You will quickly figure out how to differentiate here for effect.
Wherever you want to bring up a related but seperate entity, that's a new paragrah. Add capitals as needed and you're set.
Like I said this is just BASIC structuring guidelines, but it's a start and people will find it much easier to follow what you are saying, instant literary credibility, and they will begin to take notice.:aok

Get used to doing things you do not like such as homework and English. I am in college and it is quite obvious to me that I will being doing things that I do not like to do for a long time. I have two classes a day but about four to five hours of work.for them each night.

English is extremely important if you want to go anywhere in life. There is a reason that there is now an essay section on the SATs now. Here in college I am an Aquaculture and Fisheries major, basically I'm going to be working with fish my whole life, and I still need to be able to write and communicate. There are lots of Lab reports to write, and I even have a book report due for my math class. I have been complimented by two of my professors on my writing ability this year and I think that my ability to write comes from hard work in high school. I sure as heck was not born with it, I was born with a learning disability that made writing, as well as other things, more difficult for me than for most other students.

You will learn how unimportant sports and girls really are in the long run. I played three sports at the varsity level in high school, now I play none. Nor have I spoken to any girl from high school since graduation.

The bottom line is that what you do in high school can be crucial to how your life goes after graduation. Work hard and get the best grades you can and you will have the oppurtunity to do whatever you want for the rest of your life. If you choose to slack off then get used to saying "would you like to try a value meal today?".

Well I want to be an astronomer, but i don't think i can become one. I'm good with science and math but to get into college you need to pass English for four years but i think if I try i can bump it up.

I don't think either works, well maybe the second works.

Mics seem to pick up on the higher pitches and make them even higher.  Does the same with female pilots, though not to the extent as it does the young boys.  Just wait a few years, the balls will drop eventually.

Well, let's put it this way.  When you speak on Vox, my dogs starts howl, windows and glasses shatter, my eardrums start to bleed and a dolphin knocks on my door.

Feedback is far more pleasurable to listen to at full volume than it is to hear your voice on vox.

Honestly, I find that about 90% of the people in this game have no idea how to use the English Language properly.
Here are some examples:

one of my biggest pet peeves:  where people use of instead of 've.
For example: Should of should actually be Should've.
Would of should be Would've.

I don't understand how people don't know this????!!!!??????

And all the typical mistakes in spelling.  I'm sorry, but I find it difficult to
take anyone seriously who can't express themselves with proper spelling and punctuation.  And, regardless of what people like to believe, Spelling and Punctuation directly correlate with intelligence and IQ, or at the least the capacity to learn.

I see these people exactly as I see the morons who feel the need to type IN CAPS all the time (followed by nasty little PMs about how one is a dweeb or a noob or a dork because they shot him down).

Actually, would've is a contraction of would have, not would of.

For example:

I would have ignored this post but I couldn't resist the easy jab. [Correct]

I would've have igored this post but I couldn't resist the easy jab. [Correct]

I would of ignored this post but I couldn't resist the easy jab. [Incorrect]

"Would of" came about because it sounds similar to the spoken word "would've.

Now that we know you're firmly in the 90% crowd, you may go.

Neubob is a curmudgeon.

gawd dang whippersnappers.

I'm approaching old fart status myself.  Dispite their misgivings, the younger generation is smarter, more savy and worldly then my generation would have dreamed.  On the flip side they require instant gratification and are filled with a sense of entitlement.   They will grow up as everyone does, and they will carry the torch.  Spelling is over rated.

Raider 73

"Would you like to Super Size that sir"... Get used to saying that because THATS WHERE you will probably end up With your present attitude. Kids with the "IDC" mindset can look forward to incredible opportunities in the fast-food or janitorial industries. It is obvious that you don't talk to adults... Thats why you write like an ignorant kid.

HINT: Microsoft Word can only check spelling and grammer... It won't improve bad ideas! Take a little advice from someone who has been "around the block"... Learn to communicate effectively because you never know when Microsoft Word will not be available to you. If you don't know how to write and spell, and you don't have the crutch of modern technology to lean on you will look like an uneducated fool, usually at the worst possible moment.

First of all, allow me to explain that I wasn't even born in this country, yet I have a better grasped on the English language as well its nuances much better than the average moron (yourself included) who must denigrate others in order to rocket himself to celebrity status on the forum AS WELL as in-game.  You are a pathetic tool who twists what people say to benefit your own grossly inflated ego.

How you managed to coerce your quark sized single ganglion to incorrectly comprehend what I said is beyond my concern.  It is a given that would've/could've and the rest are contractions.  How you make yourself feel better about your limited intelligence by knowing such mundane things is your prerogative (spelled correctly in case you're trying to flame me for an incorrect spelling, fool).

I suggest you keep to more simple matters such as voicing your your grievances with "squeakers" and similar organisms.  This is more your area.  Discrediting people on the forum, especially when you most assuredly twist their words to benefit your ego: I can equate that to the bits of excrement that stick to the rim of a public toilet.

As you can clearly see by your own post, I didn't have to twist anything.   Of course, unless you can show where "would've" is a contraction of "would of" instead of "would have".  Maybe you should look into some ESL classes at your local community college.
