Forgive me if I'm wrong....
But didn't lancs have quad .303's in the tail? One reason that I don't like flying lancs is because of the lack of a belly turret (why the brits didn't spec that is beyond me), but also the pitiful lack of ammo for the tail turret.

Just my guess, but I think thye didn't have a belly turret because of the big bay doors?

The Lanc did have a belly gun but was removed to fit H2S.
As SpikesX said, there was the 33' long bomb bay capable carrying 14000lb of bombs . The B-17 and B-24 sacrificed bomb load for the belly turret.
Late war when the Lanc started flying day missions, the belly turret was re-installed.

While quad .303 in tail was the most common version, the one we have depitcs Lancs equipped with a Rose Rice turret carrying the twin .50 Browning armament.
And while our .50 cal tail turret has less ammo, it's increased hitting power and especially the increased effective range is more than worth the reduction in ammunition capacity.

Since when has "common version" had anything to do with planes or their loadouts?
As you know there are MORE than a couple of uncommon versions.

I think it was a joke, he meant of to give him the .303's since they are useless unless you want to ruin someones paint job.
