Well apparently based on listener requests, a few local radio stations have kicked off "All Christmas Music" from now til New Years.
Now look, I like the holiday music like anyone else. I especially like the Manheim Steamroller versions.
But 24/7 for 38 days? Eh gad.
Now I really wish I had satellite radio at the office!

I've been listening to TSO, christmas music since the begining of November :D .

i HATE anything that has to do with xmas before december 1. I remember when shops and whatnot didnt have a single xmas item on display before december. Now they seem to start in october/beginning of november.
-
Please, I was up at 3:30 so I could be to work at 4:30 (need my coffee and time to get energy drinks). Open at 5AM. Honestly, who goes to Linens 'N' Things at 5 in the morning? Don't people have anything better to do or at least somewhere better to shop? Christmas music for us consists of the same 20-30 songs sung by pop or easy listening bands. It's delightful:rolleyes:
Oh and I think we had Christmas stuff on the sales floor in the middle of September.
-
We've got a silly station like that coming out of Portland. Started listening the day before Thanksgiving, and I'll continue until Christmas! :D

Was a pretty sore issue here some time ago when FDR moved our Thanksgiving holiday up a week to extend the Christmas shopping season longer to jumpstart the economy. Was watching this story the other day on the History channel and one shop keeper said sarcastically "better do your Christmas shopping today, who knows, Christmas might be tomorrow".

Naaahhh, tryed that, didn't help. I think it made me even worse.
But TSO is really good, I like them.

KVIL started doing that a couple years ago. What a beating! It's 85 in the shade and they are playing Winter Wonderland.:huh

A station here is playing Christmas music 24/7, started on the evening of the 21st. Im going to be burnt out on it before too much longer.
I can only take so much from the 10,000 variations of "Frosty the Snowman" or "Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer"
Makes me want to buy a sausage laiden pizza and drown my sorrows in it

Guys, you CAN turn the radio off or switch stations. That's what the rest of those little buttons are for. :p

Unfortunately for me, the rest of the stations that my radio can get is nothing but garbage music. (I only have a radio with an antenna, cant get much inside the house) :(

You work in a grocery store right? Your taste in music was killed long ago by the continuous elevator music. ;)

I really hated working at Centennial. They had MUZAK and it was the same songs in the same order every 3 hours, everyday. Madness!
That's why I listen to talk radio exclusively now.
-
When the Macarena was big there was a station in Colorado that played that one song over and over, 24/7, for at least a month or two.

Amen to that.
It seems to get earlier and earlier ever year.
You know its too early for Cristmas stuff when my daughter complains about it.
I dont get in the mood to hear Christmas music till about 2 weeks before Christmas.
But they way they have it now.
By the time Christmas actually arrives Im absolutely sick of hearing Christmas music

Me too. I listen to talk almost exclusively.
Even the regular stations if you pay close attention play pretty much the same songs with only slight variations every day.
One station I noticed not only played the same songs (with the occasional request thrown in) every day. but at damn near the same time every day.
That was pretty much the last straw for me
with the thousands and thousands of songs out there. You would think they could go for weeks if not months without ever having to play the same song twice.
-
People still listen to FM music?

Yes but you cant escape the non stop ever tooo early Christmas music unless you never leave your home.
Go to the food store and its Jingle Bells
The hardware store has a complete Xmas display blasting out "Joy To the World"
And forget about going to a clothing store or a mall.
Its enough to make me not even want to shop

Yeah and not just the music either. Kinda hard to keep the xmas "mood" over 4 months.
If i could choose i would have it from december 15th to newyears and NOTHING before or after that.
I can dream.:lol

I've started listening to audiobooks while in public on my MP3 player. When I went christmas shopping in the MoA a couple days ago, I was able to spend over an hour there because I was listening to Glory Road by RAH. My mall patience would have expired in about 5 minutes otherwise. This technique can be used to defeat ubiquitous xmas music too.
Bonus: You can accidentally not hear a salesperson who accosts you.

Now there is a better thought then the one I had.
My patience in the malls during the shopping season is about the same before I just want to start swinging a club at everyone.
This year I was considering going with a running chainsaw just to keep everyone away from me.
Ever notice there can be nobody looking at an item that looks interesting to you untill YOU go over to take a look at it?
Then and only then. 4 other people will try to shove their way in front of you to look at the same item.
LOL Im getting short tempered just thinking about it

I need no additional reasons to not want to shop.

This is my favorite time of the year.
Christmas music is on in my truck whenever I am not listening to talk radio.
On the other hand I hate when they bump Savage for a frikken blazers game. Who the devil cares about the fricken blazers? But now there is Christmas music and all the nice lights on houses on my route.

Ugh MUZAK stunk
Up here, we have one locally owned rock station (owned by Stephen King, the horror author). Listen to the station for 3-4 hours and you start hearing the same tunes, over and over. While locals claim to be better than the Clear Channel/big companies, whoever is picking the songs isnt very creative.
I'm restricted by what the radio can pick up. Once the Lifeflight chopper starts spooling up, there goes a few more stations.
Sadly, upon surfing the dial tonight, its down to twangy rock, 3 country stations or the 4 Christmas stations. Ugh!
Might be a good night to make some progress in a new book.
-
LePaul, I'd be willing to bet that station is satellite fed and the DJ's are not even in Maine. TM21 produces about 20 different radio formats and beams them to stations all over the country. You may have 1 or 2 live local guys, but the rest are sitting in Dallas spinning corporate playlists.
-
94.9 FM WHOM :)
Which does King own? Frank or the Led Zepplin station? :P
I just saw him at the Irving in Fryeburg last week.
-
King owns WKIT (100.3 FM) and WZON, a popular AM station for sports.
http://www.zoneradio.com/
WKIT has local DJs. I knew the guy who did the midnight to 7am haul. From what he said, they have a fairly strict playlist since if they go too far off list, they have to pay royalties, etc.
-
We have a Couple of Clear stations, they don't usually get that bad.
Might have something to do with me only listening to one of them... And them only ever playing rock, ever.
So... yeah... I'm not a big holidays person, food yes, happyfuntimes not so much.
Thankfully, our local stations don't start churning out the Xmas stuff for a while. It's just recently cold enough to BE winter...
Crazy Texas...
-
Just sayin it's becoming more widespread. Locally owned stations are turning to SatFeed to get high quality talent and music at a low cost. They have a pretty slick setup and it's hard to tell it's not local. If you ever hear Chaz Mixon on the air, it's a satellite feed from TM21.
-
Well at least on Saturday nights, the House of Hair with Dee Snider gives me 2 hours of excellent music :)
-
Thank COD in my 23 years in radio, I never worked for a "All Christmas All The Time" station. It was bad enough doing 4x an hour up to CHristmas Eve...then most all stations go "All Christmas" Christmas Eve & Christmas Day.
The mentality is this, however: businesses (stores) will leave it on all day, gettin SOME 8-10 hour mentions in the Arbitron rating diary. The stupid part of that is that you are letting your customers hear commercials for other stores (and their consequential "sales").
The other mentality is that houswives will leave it on all day while doing holiday related things (trimming tree, cleaning for a holiday party, etc.) and getting another few "long term" TSL (Time Spent Listing) entries in the Arbitron diary.
The REALITY is that most listeners will tune to any format for about 45 minutes before losing interest and scanning other stations...especially during lengthy commercial stopsets....
And the stopsets are lengthy this time of year as most stations will break their 3 minutes or 5 spots rule per stopset to pick up more station revenue.

What? You don't want to hear Michael Jackson singing Santa Claus is coming to town a few times? How un-American, uh, nevermind.

Just for you Nilsen. Well, Tigeress can listen too.

That's a beautiful song and beautifully performed. I can listen to it over an over.
-
I was reading the bio of the lead singer in this song and wasn't surprised to read this:
Jennifer recalls, "I remember attending Sunday mass with my mother in a crowded auditorium. During the sermon, I jumped up on my folding chair and started blasting out a tune on the top of my lungs, interrupting the priest and the whole congregation... I got my first taste of performing for a big crowd."

I think some people are filled with music and they simply cannot supress it.

The local radio station I listen to in Tucson has reverted to constant Christmas music. I have turned it off until about the week before Christmas. I'll just listen to my tapes and CD's until then.
