Title: history check on pony skin
Post by: Mus51 on November 24, 2007, 09:45:48 PM
Hey guys,

A friend of mine did a skin earlier on ah-skins.com of 1 of the mustangs in the movie empire of the sun but i think they they lack details shadows and good merges. Though i really like that paintjob they did on the pony out of the movie and i know there were a couple of squads in WW2 who flew D pony's in the pacific but i never seen this paintjob on it, does anyone know wich squad this could be? Or if it ever existed?

Thanks in advance..

I think I've seen a 51D with that lightning bolt insignia. The number on the tail doesn't seem right, tho. Generally you'd have the individual airframe number forward of the roundel, with a s/n on the tail.

118th Tactical Recon Squadron from the CBI.

I've not seen that particular plane in a photo but that's the color scheme for their 51s.  CO's bird was numbered 600

It was used on both their C and D model 51s.

Thanks for the info Guppy, these pony's strafed an japanese airfield in the movie wich was based on a true event. I dont know if it was the same squad in real life but if i can get the resources i might skin this plane.

EDIT: also, the nose cone seems different from profiles i found in real life, tho i like this nosecone over the ones in real life.

Let me see what photos I can find.  Better to go with historically accurate over a warbird paint job for a movie.
