That is pretty cool. Don't know if soldiers will be equipped with them soon but it does seem to be inevitable.

Pretty neat.

Now they just need to miniaturize the bulkyness of the components off, make it EMP resistant and do something about the hands.

:)

That's old. Imagine the experimental stuff.  :)
Man, that even looks pretty antiquated.. steam punk sort of stuff.  Miniaturize indeed.

I missed Sergeant Zim, anyone else have better luck finding him? Also where are the tactical nukes,  rocket launchers and the flamer? Oh, this must only be a scout suit. Can't wait until the marauder comes out.

Heinlein anyone?

Someone call Caterpillar, let's see these on carriers and air force bases assisting w/ ammo reloading.

Something like that would also be great for a paraplegic or even a quad as long as they had any muscle control at all.

That thing will use up power so quickly that they would have to replace the
battery every 30 to 60 mins.  either that or it will have to be attached to
some kind of generator, which would limit it's ability to go anywhere.  It
might have some use in a supply role, but until they come up with a power
source that doesn't have to be replinished so quickly it will never be used
by the common foot soldier..

It just needs to be portable enough that it can be carried between engagements and useful enough in combat that it's worth carrying.

If you think THIS is impractical, take a look at the first airplane.  The first Wright-Flyer would have been absolutely worthless on the battlefield, but some folks would agree that modern fixed wing military aircraft are not entirely without their uses today.  It's an R&D device.

even with it's portability issues, I can think of a million uses for this thing in reguards to air craft mait.  All the things that require multiple people, forklifts, and cranes can be replaced or greatly scaled down.  Pallet loading on aircraft could become completly antiquaited.

If nothing else,  the extra strength could, everything else remaining the same, carry lots of armor and/or power supply hardware.

Even tethered to an external power pack, this could really benefit supply movement.  With the proper grappler appendages, one dude and a generator could offload a LOT of heavy supplies without assistance even in hot or otherwise adverse weather conditions.  That's a big deal.  Replacing a 12 man work gang with a couple guys (or even small women... it won't matter) wearing these suits could make a big difference in many situations.

The biggest limitation I see is one of pure mechanical leverage.  I don't care how strong the exoskeleton is, you still have to have a stable base to lift stuff from otherwise you tip over.  But for repeated movement of small/heavy items like those ammo cans and other items where you have to lift from almost directly below such as missile loading, this may be perfect.

No.

Especially not after your other recent post about feeling girly today.

Irrelevant.  There was no context.  Your post consisted primarily of a statement about feeling like a girl, and therefore stands alone.

I have helpfully added the relevant portion of your statement to my previous post, to jog your memory.

batteries are coming along. Only reason there hasn't been any major breakthroughs with battery life is because we haven't really needed it.

I do remember hearing about a 4 year laptop battery not so long ago. News about it was released a month or two ago. So by the time the other parts are small enough, the batteries will likely be ready.

Crockett, I believe they're always researching batteries-If not for something like an electric car, then for something like small portable devices. To be truthful, every battery currently out there has alot of room for improvement.

lol funny you mention anime..

there is one that actually has the characters using an exoskeleton like that one. If i remember right the 'pilot' wore a 'frame' like the one seen in the video here and the robot he piloted was human shaped but about 5X bigger than the pilot was.. and the pilot's frame was inserted in the middle of the robot so the pilot could move the thing just like he moved the frame suit.

Only that the 'robot' thing carried and fired an anti-personel minigun that had a 120mm cannon rifle on top of it and of course, could run buttering fast and jump over buildings.

I dont see why this cant be done with that suit. The tech is there. :P

It could also be used by fire departments and rescue teams.  Think about how it could be used after a major earthquake.

I think that extension cable required for operation might hinder combat use somewhat.

thats truly impressive Viking.

And they said that suit would cost about $20,000 once its comercial in a few years.

Thats the price of a mid-range car... wow. Not expensive at all considering the incredible applications for it.

I was thinking more along the lines of Hienlen's Mobile Infantry suits, from "Starship Troops" (the book, not that piece of cr^p movie).  An adequate power source remains the main issue as far as battlefield use goes.  Still, it could prove very useful in innumerable ways, even if it must be linked by hard-line to a fixed power source.
