The server has been locking up a few times today, five times i beleave.
-
HTC, please replace New Server with OLD Server. I've not seen as much warping in 5 years as I've seen in the last week. Have seen several 1-2 minute complete arena freezes, meaning everyone is shooting and nothing is dying then about a minute later everything goes boom. Pretty unplayable IMHO, That is all. Thank you in advance. :)

I'm having minor problem with new server. 6 discos in what...24 days? I havn't had 6 disco's like that in the past 5 years.
What's up with that?
-
Haing some minor issues myself when logging in....
Arena comes up/ all goes black/ back to desk top with error message.
Never happend before.
Not really having any playing issues though.

Dont forget to mention those plays we shoot down, i.e no wings, no tail, on fire, that chase people down gun blazing for 15 minutes till the person decides to land. Server bug?

i never use to get lag but i do now. i think its AT&T the new server. i understand going with the cheaper server but not if it hurts your product.

Only 6? Man, I have got 38 in the past month and a half... and that is with roughly 35 hours or so in two months of flying time. Getting discoed 4 times in 2-3 hours in no fun and you have to hurry to do anything. Flew for 30 minutes in a bomber just to disco right be drop on a CV.... I am told it is with some of the companies and their connections on who they go through. Ping-Plot it and send it to Skuzzy.

sux to be you LOL
-
I have also had more warps/lags and disco's since the new server. Glad to know that its not just me
-
I'm with Shawk on this one. warps, discos and other cartoon mayhem is making my game even more entertaining than usual. Lord knows I don't play for entertainment.
-
I haven't had any more disco's than normal, but I have noticed a lot more warping as of late. I had assumed it was just me.
-
Same problems there: lag, booted off the game on start up, micro locks
ups, planes blowing out 3 sec or more after your burst etc...
-
While I had much more disco's than usual, most of them were defenitely caused by my ISP and my own hardware :(
-
No discos, but the ol' stick wiggle seems to be much more "effective" now.
I wanna see one of them arena freezes. :D
-
Yeah it sucks balls :aok
-
Only problem i've noticed was people Warping and this weird glitch with planes, I however have not lagged in 2 months, so im happy with that knowing its not my end, however the constant warping of others makes game less attractive :(
-
I was in a fm2 yesterday, had my tail completely shot off along with a wing etc... I flew like a helicopter for about 90 seconds... 50 feet off the water... more like a hovercraft really... sideways, long as I kept the nose up she kept flying.

The smoothing code makes that sound more like it is you than the others. A visible lag and jump of your plane would be your machine stopping, ie to process something else. Everybody else warping, especially all at once, is your internet connection being behind.
-
I wouldn't say everyone, perhaps I see one warper per 50 in main arena, I mean thats pretty good, mainly I see someone on dialup or what not just zippin around lagging.
Funniest warper Ive ever seen was only time my Tempest got bounced, a P-51B at 15k was 5.0k behind me, I was in a climb and seen him and didnt think much of it figuring i'd have my E back to engage him, so Im staring at my speed, up to 350 then, I look behind me, a P51 Warps to 800 behind me then my wing comes off, and he goes 800 infront of me. warping entire time.
sadly it was my internet not his that did this :(

I've been seeing a lot more text buffer lag since the new server went in. Had a couple of delayed kills and a few warpy cons too, but that may have been their connects rather than the server.

More than likely the problems are related to the holidays than anything else. Always happens this time of year.
Again, if the packet loss is at the last hop, then more than likely the problems are on the return trip. Only way to find out is for me to run a trace back to the source.
Comcast and other ISP's who are implementing a new traffic shaping technology are not helping matters either.

This is not normal for me.

The Internet is a dynamic monster constantly changing. Nothing is static. What is true today, will not be true tomorrow. Another truism is, there is alway something broken on the Internet.
This time of year, as the weather changes around the world, and the people are out on holidays and vacations, the Internet is just a nasty mess. Always has been, always will be. It may not effect you today, but there is a very good chance it will effect you tomorrow. Point being, the odds will catch up with you.
Then it will all change again.
A server, any server, would be hard pressed to cause a disconnect. A disconnect is an abnormal termination of a communication stream. If the server was causing it, it would, generally speaking, effect everyone at the same time.
-
I'm discoing to the point of it being non-playable these days. Unfortunately the blinking light on my modem lets me know it's my ISP. Thanks for that info on the new net technology Skuzzy, hopefully that and the holidays is the cause and they figure it out soon!
-
My connection has sucked ever since ATT took over SBC.

You mean since SBC bought AT&T and then adopted the AT&T name?

Neither, and things like this do not help without knowing the exact arena someone is in. The arenas are spread across 3 servers.
There are some consistencies though. Road Runner and Comcast users have both been having severe problems for the last month, or so. The server has nothing to do with this. It has everything to do with the ISP adopting a new traffic shaping system.

Dunno Skuzzy. I noticed some odd chat lags the other night. Someone apologized to me for a false check 6 call on range vox BEFORE I got the check 6 call :) .... it was like "sorry Vulcan, wrong key" ... pause... "Check 6".

What bothers me is no internal changes to the computer but the crashes are all the back to a full restart of the computer. Blue screen off death and a restart of the computer. Then comes the "yer computer had an unrecoverable blah, blah, blah. Wanna report it?" The only thing I run on this computer is the "game" and a few songs.
IMHO, that's not a normal occurance. My ISP has changed over from RR to Comcast but that was more than 6 months ago. This is a recent thing. My count is now up to 6 full discos in the past 24 days. This begs the question...what do we need to do when contacting ComCast?

Comcast is being sued in California for what they are doing. It really boils down to the court case outcome. Comcast would have everyone believe that what they are doing will not effect anything other than heavy users of the Internet. Point of fact, anytime you introduce packet monitoring mixed with qualifying that packet, you just added another step to packet delivery which will have an impact on every packet traversing that network.
Vulcan, what you described is attributable to Internet related issues as well. Folks, the holidays here always have a dramatic impact on the Internet.
Makes it really difficult to weed out the chaffe from the real issues. After tha holidays are settled out, then it will be easier to tell what is happening.
Ren, blue screens are another matter entirely. Send me a DXDIAG output please with a description of what is happening.
There are a number of issues being posted in this thread and everyone wants to blame the server for them. Fine, but if you want to solve th eproblems, then let's step back and take a more pragamatic approach.
Ping plots and trace routes are useless to me without a source IP address so I can trace back to that IP address. There very maybe problems in AT&T's network, but without source IP addresses, I am stuck.
Crashes to the desktop can be a hundred things. I would like to see some details of the machines involved in those. Please use email fo rthis as the DXDIAG output is large and easier get through when it is in an email.

Skuzzy is asking for people who are having troubles to do the following to help skuzzy / HTC find what is causing the problems for you all
ping plotter and/or trace routes that includes your source ip address
emailed print outs of your DXDIAG output ( Direct X Diagnosis )
maybe even type of internet connection - modem/cable modem/DSL/ T-1 etc....
your Internet provider
your computer specs
your geographical location
times of the day that these problems are happening to you.......
is better to be helpful than trying to be the funniehh......

If I did, I would not need everyone to provide information. If you want problems solved, then it is a give and take proposition. I have a good idea of what may be happening here, but it is based on prior historical information.
Could be way off the mark. Current data will provide the proper context to troubleshoot what is going on.
It is difficult to separate the chaffe from what is constant, but not impossible.
The old server was a dual Xeon 2.6Ghz based server with 3GB of PC1600 RAM. The new server is dual 2.66Ghz Quad Core Xeon server with 8GB of DDR2-667 RAM. Running the same load as before. That is why I balk a bit at it being the server. Not saying it is not possible, but right now, with all the information I have, I would be remiss to not look elsewhere first.

ill see what i can dig up,i do know before the lag my frame rate droped for 60 to about 11.Thats how i could tell a lag was coming.

What could be causing the whole arena to "stop" other than the server? The true final hop, maybe...
-
While everyone else was having problems I had four days of excellent gaming and then Sunday night I got three Comcast disconnects. I ran ping plotter and monitored the connection until things cleared up and then no more problems that night. I did notice a little delay in kills exploding and enemy bombs doing damage but it looked good otherwise. Today however the white screen and disco after bombing the city and getting half way home just killed the fun and then I learned the points dont count either. Great just great.

The troubles i was having seemed to have cleared up for the most part a few days ago, but it was pretty bad for about a month or so, but hopefully they will be good for a while for me. but ya never know, i learned more about how the internet works and how servers and the game function then i wanted to know, but once you know a little about how things are supposed to work, it makes trouble shooting alot easier.

A freeze/pause of the client on your computer is your computer causing it. The lack of network packets does not stop the client from running. This symptom has nothing to do with the server or the Internet.
The only case where the Internet might be involved would be the case of a DOS (denial of service) attack on your connection which would cause the CPU to be too busy to service the game.
Pauses and freezes are normally nothing more than resource related issues.

Just think about this, this is the busiest shopping time of the year, and a good portion of the shopping is done on-line. Your going to see all kinds of warps and stuff in the game all due to lag from people using up band-width to browse the cyber malls till christmas. Then we will have all the squeekers back for the winter vacation. So we are pretty much screwed till after the beginning of the new year.
-
The shopping was bad enough it crashed Yahoo's merchant services due to over load.

lols glad i dont shop at all on intardnet
youd think that they would have prepared for that kind of traffic, guess not eh
i dont see very much lag at all on my end and im on bellsouth.net
ATT too i think.
the main thing is white screen of death and nvidia driver stoping responding but these are computer resourse issues and driver issues
i finaly figured out how to get my xp system running clean
i went to black vipers site and learned a lot of system servises i could shut down
also thats the only way to kill my norton antivirus 2008 cause i cant shut that down in task manager.
now at system idle i run 17 proceses instead of 26
usualy still crash out once or twice a day
gonna add a gig of ram for cristmas can't beat it for 40-50 bucks
-
Just FYI, Norton's Anti-virus patches the XP kernel. There is no real way to shut it down. Just because it does not show up in the Task Manger does not mean it is not running.
-

Those look pretty good. The return path on the last one was where the bounces were occurring. It is happening in Level3's network.
Not terribly bad though. No packet loss.
What issues are you having?
-
Text lag/kill message lag. It seems like ever since u guys installed new server, I have been getting text lag. I type a message and 3-10 secs later it posts. It happens quite regularly too and never clears up.
-
I was on last night testing for this and could not get it to happen. You are up in the Northeast. Hmmm,..seems to be a lot of complaints from that area. Dunt know if it is related yet or not.
Was the ping plot done during the occurence? Could you run it for more than 10 samples? Say a 100 samples?
Also, when it happened, did you notice if anything else paused or delayed? Did you try going to the Early War arena and see if it acted the same way?
-
I will rerun it tonight. As far as warping issues and such, no. There are your occasional planes that warp but it usually 1 out of a few planes that does which tells me its that individual and not me. I haven't tried the other arenas except for both LW arenas. Both had the issue.
-
Both LW arenas are on two different servers. One of which is the same one we have been using for years. Did it happen to be on the large terrain?
-
Well, I can't remember a few nights ago but I know lastnight it did which was a large terrian and also only 1 LW arena.
-
I experienced an oddity, sunday on montis map.. landed, /.efluffied, and was put in the tower on an _enemy_ base (map said so at least). no "you landed" or "kvuo75 landed x kills". My brother, on the same connection, at the same time, had similar problem, but when he .efluffied, his put him in a forest somewhere, and told him he had to be stopped to end flight. he was about to reboot, I told him to wait, I think it's some kind of weirdo lag, sure enough about a minute later, we both get the landed successfully and landed x victories messages at the same time..
have had zero problems with warping or discos lately, just these weird lags, twice.
the other time I recall was a week or two ago where everything seems to still work fine, except planes stopped taking damage until some time later -- like about 100 20mm hitsprites dead on a p51 with no result. gave up on him, shot up someone else, same thing, go "wtf?" until a minute later when 2 kill messages and a bunch of text flood thru. lots of people on country channel noticed this occurence. Lots of "wtf's"
we're on comcast, by the way :noid
-
Here is some information over the noise being made with Comcast (http://blog.wired.com/27bstroke6/2007/11/comcast-sued-ov.html). There are more links on that page describing what they are doing.
It is effecting all Comcast customers nationwide.
What is not clear yet, is if Road Runner is also doing the same thing. Not everyone is having a bad time of it. Some are having it worse than others and most people are being effected by many things right now.
Right now, there is no reliable way to tell what is a problem and what is not a problem with anyone on Comcast's network.
-
Just a bit of possible information...
the night before last (Monday the 26th) the entire squad witnessed the same text lag at the same time, it lasted about 3 seconds, and then went back to normal.
Last night (Tuesday the 27th) there were sporadic text lags 1/2 second or so, there weren't too many but multiple people in different locations witnessed the stutters at the same time.
It's not as huge as was a few years ago when you guys put in a different server, but it is sometimes noticeable.
-
Skuzzy I dont know but if I read what you posted right it doesnt look like you remembered to add the link to the information on Comcast.
I want you to know that last night on Titanic Tuesday I was seeing enemy contacts on radar in areas I should not be able to. As the con moved every thirty seconds or so it would show as a green dot and then disappear for thirty seconds. Once in visual range it was an enemy dot and red as usual.
-
Isn't the text buffer/ login server different from the MA servers? I have seen when people couldn't log into the game, the text buffer was also locked up.
-
Fixed the link Chalenge.
The login server is a different server on a different network. Wherever the arena runs is where the comms also runs.
-
Ok, here are 2 100 sample plots from both LW arenas.
Now tonight I didn't notice any text lag in any orange arena. Some in blue but nothing like before. Other arenas were fine.
-
You have packet loss on every hop, starting with the first one, which is your immediate Internet coinnection. Are you running a wireless router on your home network? Are you running a router at all?
I would expect all types of odd problems with that kind of packet loss. I can pretty much gaurantee you the server is the least of your problems.
-
yes I have a wireless router but I not wireless, my sons computer is though. Actually my Modem is a All in one from my ISP. Modem/router
-
Don't know if this is related to what is happening , but Skuzzy
is right about the holidays .
With everyone downloading video's and music all providers good or
bad are running out of broad band .
-
Skuzzy...
I forgot to tell you the ping times in my email are all max pings.
-

Typically any wireless connection is going to suffer some amount of packet loss due to bit error rates. No way to prevent it.
You problems stem right from your Internet connection itself. I would try power cycling the router and see if it clears up that mess. If not, it is time to give your ISP a shout. Nothing on our end could cause the problems seen in that Ping Plot.
-
why is it fine at 80 samples or less?
-
It might start out fine, but your connection slowly fails as your router tries to hold on to its connection.
When ever a router starts dieing here (mine last about 8 months) they will start doing stuff like that. One minute everythings fine, then I can only connect to a few sites, then its ok, then nothing. Power cycling, wouldclear it up, some times for weeks, but it always got to the point I just didn't want to mess with it, and I'd get a new router.
I've been told that router (home versions) last about 8-12 months. The more heat that gets to them the quicker they go. I don't know if thats true, but thats about what mine last on an average ( on my 3rd one now). My Dad seems to go through them quicker. His is buried behind the desk under all the wires, so maybe its true.
-
Well, My old router I had for 2 years which was also wireless and the 1 before that is 7 yrs old and still going strong but that not wireless. Only reason I changed this is the ISP supplied the modem with a wireless router built in along with 4 cable ports on it. My machine is on cable, sons in wireless. This modem is only 4 months old give or take a few.
-
Yes, but most consumer grade routers need to be reset pretty often to maintain thier performance. They are not the most robust routers around.
You should be able to run a 1,000,000 samples with no packet loss. A 100 is a drop in the bucket and should not have any packet loss. Any packet loss like yours is unacceptable for any Internet connection.
