All,
Looking to getting back in to playing war games etc...
it been 10@15 years ago that I was involved in anyway shape or form etc...
It does not matter what the learning curve is etc... hell that is most of the fun. I am NOT looking for any FPS or things like that but more on the lines of turn base strategy Simulations etc... WWII and later
Cheers

It's great, but immensely time consuming.

Ya I have War in the Pacific. Its as close as I can find to the old SSI games. Its very involved. Almost too much for my taste.

I bought the U-boat sim Silent Hunter III on a DD from Ubisoft's website. I have to say I am completely addicted to it. Something about the 180 degree opposite of a FPS and slow-as-molasses-on-a-cold-morning pace agrees with me. I just wish I had the system to play its Pacific war based sequel.

Pacific Storm :Allies
Clunky interface, crashes annoyingly often, is historically very questionable, yet I find it strangely addictive.
Frustrating to be sure, but very cool all the same.
Gameplay is somewhat similar to the 'Total War' series...ie you have a strategic map for moving formations around the PTO, and a 'Tactical Battle Map' for when enemy fleets engage each other or shore facilities.
Resources in the form of oil, iron and aluminium must be managed, and more importantly, shipped back to the home country so they can be turned into ships, planes ammo etc...these shipping and transport lines are exceedingly vulnerable.......a Nation's war efforts can be utterly strangled by denying the use of transport shipping through submarine fleets, air attack or surface fleet action.
Personally I would rate it around 6 or 7 out of 10
Cheap too, and available for download purchase.

Rome Total War, etc. are good for some fun.
Charon

Matrix games has also other good strategy games, like Battles in Normandy and Battles in Italy.
-
I used to like Axis and Allies and have always been tempted to buy the computer version.
Has anyone tried it? Is it any good?
-
I've been trying to get my old copy of A&A (1998) with the patch to work on my XP Pro machine but to no avail so far. I did love playing that game.
-
Are you really talking about the old Avalon Hill and SSI style games or just strategy games for the computer?
If it's strategy games I still play Command and Conquer, the latter games as they run on Win 98 systems. There are others like HomeWorld for space style games and Civilization for a time period spanning style game.

Have found the following....
as anyone tried it?

Here's another turn based Naval Sim.
Navyfield (http://www.navyfield.com/)
-
Doesn't look so much as a sim as it does as some MMO arcade game.
-
The screenshot may look like that but you actually start in a drydock and have to outfit a frigate. Propulsion plant, fire control radar, armor and crew. You earn points and get bigger and better ships.
I have not tried it. Just read up on it. I didn't like my choice of boilers. ;-)

Always stay close with the SK's...they'll hook you up with anything you need. To a point!

Looks to me like Tacops. Which can be found at battlefront for much cheaper. Tacops really only represents Army Combat though. Although this game may be good for an early Christmas Present.
I did buy HPS War over Vietnam, real time strategy of the Air War over Vietnam, they have other titles like that game too.

I think you could find out more info at the site below. Great link. Glad someone started this thread or I wouldn't have found it.
