How do you paint the lines so well on the canopy?

I have a handful of models on my son's ceiling, but I gave up on painting the canopy lines.

Also, how did you get the faded look?  It's almost as if you applied a coat on top of the final paint job.

p.s. Greebo makes the best skins!
Title: Thanks Greebo
Post by: pipz on December 06, 2007, 05:34:59 PM
Yes I agree Greebo does and excellent job on the skins.

For the canopy I use "bare metal foil".Basicly its real thin tin foil that has a sticky back. You can get it at Squadron.com ,if your in Europe Hannants prolly has it as well or try Hobby Link Japan.Basicly ya peel some of this foil off and press it down on the canopy.Once ya rub it on there real good you will be able to see the outlines of the canopy braces.I use  my modeling knife to cut the outlines and peel away the parts that will need paint. That leaves the "glass" portions covered.Just spray your canopy and when dry peel the foil off.

As for the faded part I do this differently every time I think.I may lightin the base color of the plane and thin it down realy good and spray a mist over the model. You can thin down white or a realy light grey and that will give it a worn effect as well.Usualy after I do that and chip and wear the paint I will then spray the model with a mist of some realy thined down "dirt" color.

If ya cant find that foil or have any questions or what have ya feel free to PM me.Ill see if I can help out.

just to get this straight:

you take white or light gray, add a lot of thinner to make it 'thin' and then apply over the model?

thanks for the tip on the foil.  I tried with clear tape with no success- it doesn't adhere well enough and I get bleeding through on the seams.

Post by: toonces3 on December 07, 2007, 01:20:32 AM
do you apply the thin coat over the decals as well?
Title: Thanks Greebo
Post by: pipz on December 07, 2007, 05:38:58 AM
I will paint and decal the model.Basicly It will look like a new plane at that point. So now you want to wear the whole thing down to make it look like its been working outside.
Now thin down the white or grey realy good. This makes it translucent so it doesnt spray on realy heavy like another coat of paint.I will then spray a mist of that over the model.Do this lightly in steps until ya have ya have it to the state of wear you are looking for.Usualy I wear down the top more than the bottom. The reason being the top sits in the sun all the time.
Remember the decals reprisent painted on information that is going to wear just as much as the rest of the plane. So you build it as new and then wear it down from there.I tend to look at real world working items for hints on weathering.Such as Trucks, cars, fork lifts at work, trains.Have a look at something like that and see how it wears where oil leaks from where dirt builds up.

Tape was a good idea.I tried that as well but like you said it doesnt keep the paint out very well. The foil works much better.

Aslo a hint on decals.Paint your model then spray it with a gloss coat. Then apply your decals. The gloss coat keeps the transparent part of the decal from being seen. After the decal is applied you apply a flat or gloss coat over top of it to seal the decal.

Thanks for that Fugi.Speaking of 38s I have been talkin about building one since I was in the 475th.I have an Academy 38J kit started with decals for Jay Robbins painted 38J."I cant recall its name" Jandina perhaps?Part of the hold up has been wether to do it as a bare metal aircraft or painted version.I can get decals for Robbins 38J that was bare metal as well and we have that skin in game.Ahhhh the decisons I have to make in life

Last moments of the Bismark!!This is from my ill fated movie "ACHTUNG BISMARK FRAULINE BABY!!!!"...you may have seen it at the Sundance movie festival.I refused to let Ben Afflack play Captain Lindenman and there is no way Brad Pitt was goin to play Admiral Lutjens. They also said something about my special effects not being up to par....Bahhhhhh this is why movies outta Holywood suck any more.
