Title: sound failure
Post by: Clueso on December 02, 2007, 08:14:47 PM
Long time pilot, new machine.
Intel q6600, vista,4 gig memory, asus p5e mobo.  Sound works fine except in AH. Onboard sound max.  Any ideas would help.  No sound, reboot sound for a minute, and then nothing.  Still testing, any other ideas are welcome.  Thanks

Get a sound card. It won't use computer resources like on board sound will. I think I saw some new sb cards for less than a 100 bucks, maybe around $70. (going from memory)

Vista has some severe issues with sound drivers.  Microsoft removed the DirectSound API from Vista, which has always been a part of DirectX and forces all sounds to be played through the Vista sound API.

The drivers for that API are all new and many have a lot of problems.

There is absolutely nothing the game can do to improve this situation.  Just stay on top of the driver releases and hope they get the kinks all worked out.

I'm guessing the turtle beach and other sound cards still use the windows vista sound management, but maybe I can trade some issues because its almost unusable now.  I see an xp install in my future.

All sound cards have to go through that new API.  Some have better drivers than others, but I have yet to find one which does not have some issues.
