I am looking for volunteers to found the first AH II honor guard.
Pilots, Tankers, as well as Coordinators and Admin People and the like are requested to post replies.
The purpose of the Honor Guard is to lead our comorades in memorial services as well as special events that require our services.
No Geographical Location is required and training shall be held in accordance with squad times.
Pre-Requisites
Volunteers must have account active for more than 6 month period.
Pilots - Must train and be willing to fly military formations in all types of aircraft.
and have general knowledge of military fly overs and formations.
Tankers - Must be able to position their tanks in Military Formations on Runways and with appropriate spacing.
Not everyone has to know about formations but it is good to google them and know how a military funeral is done. Even though this is AHII and not reality it is still a community and I think that other people would like to have an Honor Guard.
The Reason for the 6 month period of account history is for durability of the Honor Guard Squad.

Im up for it,i know alot of formations and im a good tanker.Ive been playing a little under 2 years. It's a sad time for a member of such a small community like AcesHigh to lose someone we flew with or even just talked to on channle.
-
You might want to talk to some of the guy's that have been here a while. It's not that we mind if you use the name Honor Guard because we are Honor Guards the (s) makes the differances, but you will more then likley get a bunch of recoil from the ones that know the HG's past histroy. Im just giving the heads up for what may be ahead. I wish you luck with your idea, it is a good idea to have pilots from defferent squads to perform memorial services

I'm in, always wanted to start somethin up like this. I'll take a formation leader position please. :)
Is this an actual squad? Or sort of like a community organization?
PM me and fill me in.

There are some people that are disheartened at the fact that some people would like to start an official honor guard.
The Honor Guard, would not be a squad, but a squad made out of several people who may not even be in a squad but know flying and know what to do in the situation of being an honor guard.
I have seen memorial videos, and I am not knocking them at all , the guys do a great job in honoring our fallen comrades. I am simply making a suggestion to get someone started in this area of the community.
Having an official Honor Guard would be one of the most distinguished of duties, as a volunteer on the game. Pilots that are willing to fly in formations, as well as practice with one another should be welcome to join. As well as pilots that are wanting to learn should be encouraged to learn how.
For Example, I think that it would be cool to know how many tanks it would take to line a runway down the center from beginning to end at 100FT SPacing between them.
As well as to see 7 tanks at the salute, by the control tower facing the runway for the 21 Gun Salute during a memorial flight.
The Jeep would be at the beginning of the runway in the lead of all the tanks.
The favorite aircraft of the fallen would escort the C47 in the flyby of the field, preferably using their login if possible. If not the Flight Lead of the Escort Aircraft would pilot the C47.
All Other who would wish to be in the serivce can also form up behind the C47 and their Escorts, or at their leisure line the runway facing their vehicles to the front and their turrets at the salute as the procession honor guard rolls by.
We could easily get over 200 players involved in this sort of memorial service. and it would definitely look great for the family of the fallen.
Because as we all know, I think that we are touched by each and every one of the players on here, in one way or another, and the families of the fallen should know, that when they spent so many hours on this game, at the end, that it was appreciated, and that they will be missed, even by people that their wives, husbands, and mothers and fathers didnt even know or ever see for that matter.
Also as, far as taking credit, or participating in this Honor Guard, i would not be able to as I am in the U.S. Army and am currently stationed in IRAQ. I was on leave for my 2 weeks pass and had participated in a memorial flight and that got me thinking about this.
I would be more than happy for someone to take this idea and turn it into a better one, and I would really like to see this go far and be here when I return from duty in the Middle East.

LTCClark,
As a Former Marine, I know a little about Honor guards and what you have said about the fallen flyers favorite plane being the lead that is cool. I have only one sugesstion for that. If they can volunteer have the CO of the squad of the fallen flyer fly that plane. And after the planes fly over and do their thing hav ethe jeep drive down the runway and as the jeep gets to the tanks have tehm fire their main guns. Just a suggestion.
If need be I can arrange a dry run with my squaddies and post the movie here to show what I am talking about.
Also 100% volunteer, and they do it for the community not for recognition ie in signature MEMBER OF AHII HONOR GUARD. Just a sugestion. Let me know what you all think.

so you think this is a bad thing happy?
Cmon now.
This is going to far.

count me in. i have done the tank comand in two memorial flights already and i know how to fly formation. i dont mind practicing with others to become better at it. i know the spacing for tanks i can even print them out and have them on hand at all times.
i have well over the min. time served with Aces High.
and what i think Happy was saying was there is a squad that use to be called Honor Squad or something like that.
and i also liked what 68 said, you can also just put on your sig. Member Of Aces High Honor Squad.
Salute fellas i believe he is wanting some of us to take it over and run with it. i understand being in Iraq makes it hard to log on to these forums any one else willing to pick this idea up with me and run with it????? Pm me and let me know who all is willing to get this idea off the ground. would take like 4 of us to get this going.
-
I'd be interested in flying and practicing with this group.

Not trying to be to negative...
I for one would bow out when it comes to squad related Memorial Squad. No offence meant but I personally feel it's up to each squad as to how they wish to handle the loss of a loved one or friend and don't need to be bossed around concerning how they feel their buddy/family would like it done. IMHO, it's the thought that counts in showing your respect for the person, not how fancy anyone can make it.
What might be more helpful is a sticky on some board with a "how-to" for those who wish to do thier own Memorial should the need arise.
For those with no squad affiliation it might be practical. However, those same folks might not have family or friends who are that interested in what happens in the game as they may be dealing with other real life considerations.
I have participated in some In-Game Memorials out of respect for those fallen friends and will continue to do so.

I have to agree with Ren
I do respect the efforts being made here.....but in my opinion, when we lose someone....there is never a shortage of qualified pilots to fly formation and pay respects.

empty now sorry :D

Ya know what,
I think it's a wounderful idea myself, but theres just one thing wrong. If this is a go, I sugest that HiTech, Skuzzy and the rest of the staff at HiTech Creations Inc. preform the services, after all it is the fallen who put there .02 cents on HTC's pay check.
I don't mean to affend anyone

Just my two cents here, but a memorial flight for fallen players should have some sort of structure to it.
If it were to be a memorial flight for myself this is what I would want to see.
7 Sherman tanks lined up side by side in front of the tower with a jeep parked center to the formation out front. Guns to max elevation and the jeep driver directs the fire order of all seven tanks.
The flyby would start out with all the members of my squad and then anyone else wishing to participate following behind them. Alt would be 500ft down the runway heading as to pass in front of the control tower. No more than 4 abreast during the flyby.
As the last of the main flight crosses the far end of the runway a flight of 4 Me-262's would fly over the tower crossing the runway at 500ft and 400mph in a tight finger four formation. As they cross over the tower number 3 pulls up in a sharp vertical climb, smoke on, level off at 3000ft smoke off and departs the area.
After the missing man formation has passed and the smoke from number 3 shuts off, the tanks fire 3 rounds each starting from the left tank down the line with a 5 second interval between each tank firing. Interval will be called by the jeep commander in charge of the gun detail.
Once the gun salute is completed all pilots may land.
That's how I would do it.
As far as being a participant in something like that, absolutely. Count me in.
-
I think it's a great idea. And I don't think it would offend anyone to have a organized Honor Guard. If a Squad wants to pay tribute themselves then that's fine too, nothing wrong with that.
I myself have participated in Honor guard services as part of the 7 man 21 gun salute during my tour of duty from 1977 to 1984. While Stationed at Ft Bliss Texas in the 978th Military Police Co. from 1977 to 1980 I was also selected to be in Operation "Orbit Stars" which was code name for the Funeral detail of our last 5 star General Omar N. Bradley, although he did not die during my tour there, it goes to show the military was planning this big event well ahead so that everything would go smoothly and give tribute to a great man. I did get to meet and Shake hands with General Bradley as he visited our Mess hall on Thanksgiving in 1979. He was in a wheelchair by that time.
I guess my point is that a Memorial Service done by a well practiced team looks sharp in real life and was very much appreciated by family. Sure, performing this in a arena with animated vehicles and planes is far from the real thing... but the thought is there.

History on the missing man formation:
The first funeral flyover of aircraft occurred during World War I, when British fighter pilots honored the funeral of German ace Manfred von Richthofen ("the Red Baron"). Flyovers of airfields became standard practice in the Royal Air Force, to show the ground crews how many survivors had returned from a mission. In 1936, King George V of the United Kingdom received the first recorded flyover for a non-RAF funeral.
The United States adopted the tradition in 1938 during the funeral for Major General Oscar Westover with over 50 aircraft and one blank file. By the end of World War II, the missing man formation had evolved to include the pull-up. In April 1954, United States Air Force General Hoyt Vandenberg was buried at Arlington National Cemetery without the traditional horse-drawn artillery caisson. Instead, Vandenberg was honored by a flyover of jet aircraft with one plane missing from the formation.
Also in 1954, Captain Joseph McConnell was killed while testing a modified F-86 Sabre at Edwards Air Force Base, California, which was later made into a movie called The McConnell Story, featuring the formation multiple times.

id be interested in doing so
and like many have said before there are plenty of qualified pilots
out there and in reality the greiving squad will most likely want to fly these positions but in the event that we can help the community ill volunteer

I'd be up for this.
I know from participation in previous memorial flights how difficult it is to do this with the precision everyone would agree the events deserve. A trained group of flyers / tankers would be good.
The only thing I'd say is that it would obviously be important to respect the wishes of squads and friends in such occassions and to understand if they wished to handle memorial flight duties themselves.

Would be honored but I dont fall in the over 6 months account status. I am experienced in formation flying due to my EAA buddies that are all AF pukes from way back. My dad taught me most of what I know. I have flown the missing man formation 3 times in my life. Three times two many guys Three times too many.
JUGMAN
P47Gra is my name.

Doesn't matter how long you've been on. Ask most of the guys around here that have seen me 'fly'. I only get the pointy end going the right way 50% of the time as it is :D

Count me in, it would be an honor to fly for a fallen comrad in this community. I am also retired Army and have been to a few myself. I just want to say thanks to everyone the showed their respects for Tailspin.. and Yanksfan to take the time to make the Tribute film. It show allot of class and dedication to the AH community. An Honor Guad could be good, I tell you its hard being in a tight formation, especially when it one of yours. We as a community need to have a crew on standby just in case. Let me know if you need my help. <
