Since it takes time to build one, some of the most successful are also some of the oldest. To be successful might mean to some having a lot of members or ranking highest in a particular category. In truth some of these squads have little impact in the arenas they fly in.
A bomber squad would have an impact on the arenas for sure. Fighter squads may also since they have the ability to temporarily bust up missions but what I'm looking for are the ones that truly make the most difference and cover all aspects of the game well.
I know at one time the MAW did. They were one of the largest and best base taking squads there was.
The Ak's have been here a long time and definitely make an impact along with the LTAR's and AA's and there are many more that I just can't think of off the top of my head right now.
Some of them are newer and some older. Looking at the resent roster of top squads listed below you would imagine they may have the greatest impact in the arenas.
Looking closer you'll see that some only have 1-5 members and I think it takes more than that to make any serious impact on the game... in whole.
Top 25 Squads for Late War Tour 94
~Wings Of Terror~ 1 looks like some of the best pilots but have heard they like to score potato and vulch a lot...Nothing wrong with that i guess if you want to be #1 every tour and they mostly are, WTG fellas. They have plenty of base takes as well with 129
-=Most Wanted=- 2 A well rounded team, plenty of good pilots, score high most tours 62 bases took probably many saved
~~~THE UNFORGIVEN~~~ 3 Another very good squad with admirable qualities as i understand 61 base takes and many more saved i bet
Invalid 4 This is Lusche I believe. No impact on game but has a wealth of knowledge to offer on the BB....which in a way does impact the game I guess
Aces & 8's 5 A newer squad that just hit the top 10. Lots of good members and respectful. An incredible 193 base takes. Now thats an impact
Arabian Knights 6 An old squad having respect honor and experience in the AH community but only 67 bases took. Guess their slowing down :)
The Wingmen 7 3 player squad how do they get here?
The Damned Air Group (actively Flying) 8 Another old and respected name. many don't fly anymore and thats a shame but they seem to do just fine
Invalid 9
65th FS "Fightin noodles" 10 Sixteen members but only a few fly pacers crew. Seems him and lucine carry the squad
The Few 11 British squad i think. very few base takes
Wingbenders 12 Three man squad no consequense
=ARCADIA= 13 Two man crew wtf
VMF-124-=BlackHawks=- 14
THE BLIND BATS 15 Good squad it seems. Now these guys seem to make an impact as well. 167 bases took. If you can do everything well your good imo.
DEATH FROM ABOVE 16 Seems to be just an average squad but I'm probably wrong
Birds of Prey (Falcon Wing} {{ 17 Lots of talk about these guys. some good some bad
Jagdgeschwader1 "Oesau" 18
*VMF 158th GMBs* 18
Invalid 20
**The Flying Circus** 21
Raw Prawns 22
-=Hell Hounds=- 23
Opossum Hollow Gang 24
SOARING EXECUTIONERS 25 Small squad but most all play and are good it looks like
Looking at this roster it's still hard to tell who makes the greatest impact. I suppose some who read this will say Rank has nothing to do with how good you are but I disagree. It shows who is good in all aspects of the game. Even if it can be manipulated it is a show of dedication and great teamwork abilities.
Seems after just a little research and all just IMO, Wings of terror know how to score hvy and the Aces & 8's are a hell of a base taking squad to be reckoned with.
The older more experienced squads like the Dammed , Ak's, Most Wanted, and Unforgiven all definitely know how to hold on to the top spots.
I mean no disrespect to any squad. I just did a quick study because i was bored and asked a question. Which squads were exceptional, notable or time honored having the most impact on the game.
Squad ranks are just useful as player rank. Basically, it just means the entire squadron is in need of a shower and not how skillful the members are.
ack-ack
I think the best squads are the ones who just go out and have fun. They fly together, tell bad jokes, and just have more fun that squads that go out and think about how to win the war tactically. That's one reason I joined ~Gruppe Outlaws~, just a fun bunch since I joined at the end of my 2 week free trial and I haven't thought about leaving them since.
*Cough* Gruppe Outlaws #1 fighter rank last tour *Cough* :D
MY jokes are not bad :D
Yep, noticed you guys were #1 in fighter rank WTG Not easy to do I would imagine ...............but that doesn't mean the other fellas above don't have fun. I'm sure each and every one of them show up to do just that.
Nice post ZX.
We tend to spend WAY too much time slamming certain squads on these boards for the way they interpret the strategy of the game, and their style of play. In the end, there's no "right or wrong".
I propose a toast to all those squads out there in Aces High land...be they large or small. Have fun...that's what it's all about.
-
C-Hawks are probably THE oldest squad still flying today. I our 18th birthday is comin up. :)
I think a lot of people respect us. I'm one of the newer members, only been with squad since August 2006.
One of our 2 founders still fly today, under the name "ALoner". Our other was Jhffo, who has since retired from flying. I'm pretty sure he is in his 70's now. SpiveyCH and Genrl are our acting C.O.'s.
We are also in WW2 online, and Eve.
We are never in the top 50, because we don't care about score, at all. We focus around fun.
Watch our for BelethCH, one of our X.O.'s. His famous last words are "Hey ya'll, watch this!" :rofl
The Few 11 British squad i think. very few base takes
65th is lead by Dace.
The Few has some of the best European pilots in the game. Bruv119 is there C.O. I'm glad that they've come back Knights.
OK. You made me curious enough to look. . . .
Looking at the squads he's listed, I see several that are not exceptional, notable, or time honored. I see some I've never even heard of, others... I will refrain from further comment.
This thread is not titled correctly. It should be named "Top 25 Ranked Squads".
-
yeah i would agree with hub. most squads you see in the game dont even look at there scores. they go up get drunk and have a blast wingin with each other. the game would be boring as hell if every sqaud tried to be #1 lol.
i mean im suprised you didnt mention the army of muppets
or blue knights, or 367th dynamite gang. the gruppe outlaws.
these squads if they actually gived a damn would own almost any squad in the game.
you cant base a player or even a squad on what they are ranked. most people dont care anymore. thats why in player ranks you see all the 1 year players close to the top becuase they think its fun. I WAS LIKE THAT. but ive been playing for like 4 years now. and rank is just boring and unfun trust me!
I suppose in a small way I deviated off what i originally wanted. I used the records to help me find some of them and that led me to which might have made or still do impact the arenas .
To be exceptional you need to good at all aspects of the game like many in the top 25 are. There are many more i expect but thats the list i used.
Notable might be the A8's AA's Bop's Ltars and the rest i mentioned.
There are quite a few Time honored like the MAW, AK's , Damned and C-Hawks which I didn't know were 18 years old WOW!
It will take some time before you see more of them listed. Just wait and watch Hub. It should become a good thread i hope. It's not my list anymore.
Teamwork, honor or respect may play a part as well. There are many listed that demonstrate those quality's while in game play and should be commended IMO.
WidowMakers (14yrs old ish)
I bet the Damned pre-date the CH's. (Fiat? Ren? Rodan? anybody wanna help me w/ that? I can't remember when the Durned Ones started)
I'd toss in the FB's and the 68th's. If you want a time honored squad, I would toss out the Kraits.
The 79th Fighter Group is not the biggest group. And we may not be the #1 group. But we try to have fun flying together. And we do have more room for to increase our numbers. But we also help out real members of the 79th FG from World War II. Our website is one of the few places that 79th FG members stop in to get in touch with each other. We help our past out along with looking into towards the future. We have a good base of pilots in our group. We are always willing to work for base takes, deacking, etc.
We are one of the original historical heavy Fighter Groups of WWII.
Salute to all the members of 79th FG, Aces High II & WWII. :aok
There are so many squads worth mentioning for various reasons. Some that come to me off the top of my head are listed below and have my respect as allies or enemies.
VF31 Tomcatters, 323 Deathrattlers, The Diamond Backs, Blind Bats, Steel Rain, Gruppe Outlaws, SOAR, 68s, CHs, FBs, BoPs, +precision, LTAR, Pigs on the Wing, Six String Samurai, Wild Eyed Southern Boys, JBs, and of course the AArch AAngelz 187th. I am sure I overlooked some worthy squads, no offense intended.
-
Different things to different peeps.
Some like being lost in a horde of other lost souls and feeling proud of playing the "RISK" version of Aces High.
Some like looking for something to make them as infamous as Blood Dragon/ Blood Pig/Blood Whatever - like the 4Qs did in AW just to get a rise outa those too serious to remember it's still a game.
Some ... like me ... are looking for the closest thing they can to immerse themselves in a virtual rendition of the historical squadrons, planes and situations their specific WWII ace heros were in (in my case - VF-17 "Jolly Rogers").
Some don't even need no steenkin' squads.
:D
-
Man the 71st Eagles should be at the top of the list. You should come check out our Vox Channel on gut buster night.
-
If base taking is your criteria then you've named the top 25 squads.
As for contributing to Aces High, I'd suggest you look at a lot of different things.
Which guys design the snapshots, who runs the FSO's, who designs the scenarios. Who does the skinning of the planes guys fly. Who does the maps. Who are the trainer types.
I'd suggest those guys and the squads they come from contribute a heckuva lot more to the game then those who take bases.
Just my opinions of course :)
Latrobe's got it. My little outfit is only four months old now, but we are gaining members a little at a time, just folks that believe in fun above all else. Most importantly, they don't have to be he best, and I admire those that can lose gracefully.
Actually, all 3 of them are Damned noobs. :) The Damned was formed in '88 or '89. We used to have a history on the web page. But, it appears to have disappeared when the new site was set up. I am the oldest active member (some claim to fame, eh? :D).
The "AOL" WidowMakers and the Gamestorm (/\) (\/) types were created months apart from each other. (w/ the Gamestorm being the older of the two).
So yeah, we would be the "fake" ones.
Nice thread.
In my opinion being in a squad isn't about the score or the rank, just about having fun hanging out with some ol friends. But thats just me.
What? The Flying Circus is in the top 25! sweeeeeeeet!!
Yep, I came toward the end of the DOS AW era under Fool's guidence. He was around with NB, JD, SB, Dano, Eggie. I didn't see much of NB in those days but met him at one of the IND Con's. Since he is the last of the orignal active guys you might call him Grampa Ugl...err...pappyNB! :) Wasn't there a Pizza Face too? We fired up a MacAw Damned Group when AoHell took it into their Beta program while the other Damned went over to the dark side (pc's). I think Fool went over to the dark side then and got involved in training on that side. I still had my Cris account at the end of DosAW and Fool used it to go to the giant Frog Auger Conclusion. The Mac guys stayed on that side of AW until it's demise then moved to the dark side. I think that was around version AW3 but it mighta been 2. We all got back together under Lugs on Gamestorm but some of us continued as trainers in AoHell and in Gamestorm. Alot of new folks showed up on Gamestorm under Snowman and that group. I think Rodan showed up then. Fiat was a more recent addtion. I know Fool started back near the beginning using an Amega :). Those are the really old phearts of this game. I believe when the Damned migrated to AH at the demise of AW by EA around 76 Damned showed up on the doorstep of HTC. I might be off by 4 pilots but I thought we brought 3 full squads over because a bunch of the guys that had drifted away came back into the game on the move.
It's interesting to note that off all the Squads in the history these on line fighter sims, the Damned probably made up the largest section of trainers. It's fair to say just about any old Damned was a trainer at one time or another. That says alot for the group as they have always given back to the community.
-
Unlike so many other squad listed, we are one of the newest but with an old school mentality. If this were the 40's we would fit right in.
If you were to visit our site the first thing you would see is our motto: Teamwork, Honor and Respect and our first written rule is to conduct ourselves in a professional manor. We have a lot of fun breaking that one on squad :) but above all is to have fun and enjoy yourself in the company of friends.
There are many new, old and forgotten squads that have left their mark on this game. Most that I can think of have already been mentioned and proud we made the list. I believe us not only exceptional but note worthy<----- my biased opinion of course.
As far as which ones have the most impact on an arena, I'd have to say it would be any squad that works together, talks the least amount of smack and helps others learn the game. Many of our trainers come from these types of squads and the rest of you already know who you are.
Salute
Word to all the squads we work with; AA's Blind Bats Raw Prawns Death Rattlers Hells Angels HellCat fg Most Wanted 52ndKIWI Wings of camera toting pie eating terror and a few others I can remember right now
And to the squads we worry about: AK's Ltar Unforgiven Lynchmob and again to tired to remember all of the honorable adversaries we've had.
I mentioned the Kraits.
I was thinkin' about 'em the other week when I stumbled upon an old burned copy of AW3 w/ the Strategic Aircraft Converter (S.A.C.) on it.
Almost loaded that up just for the memories.
I do remember the Damned on AOL AW as mostly trainers. The WidowMakers were made up of mostly AOL employees and took great delight in hunting down the Durned ones. I recall many a' night typing "here lizard, lizard, lizard" hunting Rodan.
Good time... Good times....
Ren...
My fault. When I took over informal training on AW, we expanded it. Naturally, I hired the folks I knew (Fool and JD) to lead the sessions. They, naturally, hired trainers from the pool of people that they knew.
The same applies about a year later when Airmigan "retired" and I was put in charge of training on AOHell and Compuserve. I ended up at AOL because the only local node I had for Compuserve was 300 baud (it only took about a year to get them to upgrade the damned thing:)).
The Damned have always been a good group that been willing to help the communities in the games they have played.
Oh, since I saw someone else list their squads' games...
Air Warrior, Warbirds, Aces High, WW2OL, Everquest, Ultima Online, Asheron's Call....I know there are others (remember seeing guys posting about them on the list), however, I can't remember them.
i have to say that rank means not a darn thing....its all manipulative just means some ppl have more spare time than others. K/D is the only thing i pay attention to...btw...my sux...anyways
squads....
Killuminati is my favorite squad....we have a small number but when there are a few of us on we wing up and practice wingman tactics...keeping each other alive is the fun for us. We maybe a small squad but we roll in a force......COME GIT U SUM! hehe
-
without trying to big my own squad up or anything, 71 squadron is one of the best.
some of the best sticks in AH, all of whom are really fun interesting guys, we don't care about score or anything, we just have a barrel of laughs and some fun sweeps :)
and it's because of that i think that we're one of the biggest squads too (64 members and counting).
best sticks, best teamwork, no scorewhoring BS, hilarious squad channel, someone always online to fly with, and some really great friendships. i've been around a little bit and there is no doubt in my mind that 71 is the best squad out there.
-
T.S.M.
The Screamin Meanies! RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAA!!! I joined up with them after flying a month or two and have never looked back. Every Wed night gets rowdy on the squad channel. Keep an eye on 200 for us announcing a Death Race, those are always a blast.
That being said, Killuminati are great, they hang out with us a lot. I have a lot of respect for the 80th Headhunters, I usually hope (dread) it being one of them in a p38 because it always leads to a good fight.
Das Muppets are fun, Dutchie pwned me in my spit8 (i was rusty ;) ) in his k4 after we rolled around in a scissors the other night.
I get along with BushLt and his crew well too.
The squads that purely run around in a horde to win the war honestly aren't all that much fun IMHO but it is their 15 bucks.
I would have to say that the 71st is a squad I very much enjoy tangling with in the MA. Although I'm sure that I haven't duelled them all I can say that the ones I have are pretty much always good fights. As a whole...some of the best fights I've had have been against the 71st. However if you ever run across them and they are doing the "squad fighter sweep" thing you better watch your *** because these guys cover each other as good as any that I have seen.
It's guys like this that keep me coming back. Scorewhoring squads mean diddly squat as does score itself. Most of these "high ranking" squads you never see because they are off bombing a factory somewhere.
the only bad one in the bunch is snaphook:D
hehe....
There always has to be a bad apple in the barrel I guess:D
I've had the pleasure of flying with two other highly regarded squads before the 71st...
The AK's and the 327th Steel Talons, both of whom are exceptional in both skill and the quality/character of the individual members. After another case of burnout "burnout" I returned with not real intention of even considering a squad. I ended up talking on range with RedTop and after reavealing my "secret identity" accepted his offer to tag along for a bit. I actually still had no desire to join a squad.
After flying with the guys abit I realized the 71st is unique in that its not a squad...it's a community. At the moment (unless we open a 3rd wing) its a full up community...but alot of folks "tag along" on 171. They know that if there own guys arent up invariably some of us will. We dont even have a squad night. But when the word goes out we can often muster 50 or even 60 for a set of sweeps. We dont take bases, but if the itch is there we scratch it very well. I've seen 4-5 of us roll 6-7 bases in a row in primetime...we dont buff either.....but if we do we'll go shut a whole front down. And usually we'll bring the buffs home...
We all have our moments but all in all I think that all 64 of us fly right. We all can "score" if we want but what matters to us most is what we think of each other...and what the respected members of the community think of us as a whole.
My old squad would be one of the early 90s squad, 1st Guns formed in April 1997, but actually flew together early as 1995, Don't recall many squads still alive since then, still together today http://www.1stguns.de
I wouldn't classify a squad by basetake, 1stguns has squad get togethers across europe to fly Lan meetings, where does that classify a squad?
Nazgul is an old one and is the best Squadron out there, IMO.
-
There is ALOT that goes into making a squad "Notable" "Time Honored" and "Exceptional". Score would be for me right near the bottom of the list.
People make the squad. People and Squads make AH. Each person decides how they will carry themselves in this game. Each person decides how they will be viewed (insert online persona / ingame person). And each that are in a squad will either shine a good light on thier squaddies or bad.
Squads that last and become well known usually have some seriously good sticks that are fairly quiet or have some really good sticks that are loudmouthed arrogant jerks and don't mind showing it.
BK's are about as nice a bunch as I have flown with that back in thier hayday....could flat get busy killing and were for the most part pretty quiet about it.
Grims Reapers , formally USMC or USMC now or whatever they are now , are some base taking fighting fools. They could TAKE some bases and get busy in thier own right.
FreeBirds were much like USMC , and if memory serves , had quite a battle going on for who could do better at land grabbin. USMC or them.
AoM....hmmmm....well...they used to be quiet killers.....but that has changed over the years. Nuff said.
Nazgul....Great squad.
WM's great squad.
Damage Inc. (aka) who is btw one of the BEST guys to fly with...
AK's , JB's , Dynamite Gang , The FEW , Hells Angels , BoP's , VF31 , 56th , 99th ASTAG , 80th FS , M.A.W. , CH's , 68th , 69th , and many more are all IMHO not only Notable , time honored and exception but a pleasure to fight with and against.
My Squadron is IMHO again , the best. I'm C.O. and partial yes but the people I have the pleasure to fly with whenever I log on make the game and my time online the best it can be. We interact not to win the war perse' but to have fun. To laugh , joke and generally give of ourselves for the squad.
It's not about 1 person in 71 sqd. Its about all of us. When someone is haveing a personal problem , they know they can bring it to us as a freind in need and not just a squaddie. Real life happens in 71sqd. ANd EACH of us makes it a whole. Each of us has things to contibute no matter how big or small.
THESE are things that makes squads notable , time honored and exceptional. IMHO of course.
-
All in all I think everyone here that is speaking for there squad. or group. Can say that they enjoy flying in Aces High II. And also enjoy having a great squad. or group of guys & gals to fly with them. I fly with alot of these pilots from different squads. & groups. And most of the time I have a enjoyable air battle with them or against them.
I mentioned the Kraits.
I was thinkin' about 'em the other week when I stumbled upon an old burned copy of AW3 w/ the Strategic Aircraft Converter (S.A.C.) on it.
Almost loaded that up just for the memories.
I do remember the Damned on AOL AW as mostly trainers. The WidowMakers were made up of mostly AOL employees and took great delight in hunting down the Durned ones. I recall many a' night typing "here lizard, lizard, lizard" hunting Rodan.
Good time... Good times....
yes Kraits did it/started it - thinking it was Spiff or 1 of em in charge, Vulch maybe also. ( Flossy's Husband or Son I think had a hand in it also , perhaps )
One of my favorite squads is Sehob.
Granted it's a really tiny squad but is notable.
:)
The Flying Circus one of the first 20 or so formed in Aces Highs' first year.
Vati started us with the name Sturmjager. We were asked many times if we were a Luftwaffe squad. We flew a mix of birds so we thought it best to name the squad TFC. Clowns, little volkswagens, floppy feet and the works.
Five or 6 of us have been around since the games inception still in the squad.
Lot's of us old AWs' also.
Fidd did the Scenario Aircraft Converter with all the skins. It was another KRAIT who did the terrains.
Can't think of the name at the moment.
There are so many squads worth mentioning for various reasons. Some that come to me off the top of my head are listed below and have my respect as allies or enemies.
VF31 Tomcatters, 323 Deathrattlers, The Diamond Backs, Blind Bats, Steel Rain, Gruppe Outlaws, SOAR, 68s, CHs, FBs, BoPs, +precision, LTAR, Pigs on the Wing, Six String Samurai, Wild Eyed Southern Boys, JBs, and of course the AArch AAngelz 187th. I am sure I overlooked some worthy squads, no offense intended.
Thank you to AAolds & RedTop on behalf of the VF-31 Tomcatters <<>>
I think there are alot of great squads out there that I am honored to fly w/ & fight against.
I would never go by who is in the Top 25 to see who is better and who is not, as I believe it's the respect you show others that makes you a great squad.
The fighter rank & taking bases can be a plus; but they are not by any means the reason I have respect for certain squads.
This is not in order of which squads I respect just squads I can think off the top of my head as being everything I can only hope the VF-31 can become.
My list:
332nd, 68th, VMF-251, VMF-214, VOF-1, 71 Sqd. RAF, 31st FG, Dynamite Gang, AK's, AA's, Aces & 8's, 323, Raw Prawns, The UNFORGIVEN, 173rd Guardian Angels, Lentolaivue 34, 332nd, Black Adders, Hellcat FG...
Yep, I remember the 479th from way way back... Murder, AkaK, Crims are all great guys and will show you a thing or two and used to always offer suggestions. There are a bunch more but brain cell kill due to alcohol abuse leaves my mind kinda fuzzy at the moment. Wanna know how to really fly a 38, ask them guys!
All the Best...
