example.
I find a p51 flying along not checking his six and drop down below him out of his field of view and close in for the shot.
I realise i am going way to fast and instead of throttle back the thought occurs to me to turn my engine off.
so i do.
I end up doing s turns underneath the p51 while he is oblivious to this then once i slow enough I turn my engine on to stay on his six while still below his field of view.
he hears this instantly even though i am 50 yards away and immediately pulls a negative G dive and screams to the deck and escapes. (I believe the individual must have been playing with external aircraft sounds turned full up. he should not have been able to hear my aircraft behind his.)
the sound code must be changed to make planes behind you sneaking up on you undetectible by audio.
it should be required to actually see the enemy plane to evade it. hearing somthing with a loud 2000 hp engine in front of you while flying 300mph is pretty rediculous.

I agree.
I know that some people turn their own engine sounds off so that they can hear what's going on around them without having to look.
You should be able to turn your engine sound down.... I have mine turned down a bit in order to hear radio chatter more clearly. This does not give me an 'edge' on hearing aircraft around me though, as it's still loud enough to drown external engines out.

Agreed with this, it's ridiculous.

Gotta agree here, only been up in a couple prop driven planes but I did get to spent some time in the back of a SNJ Navy trainer and you couldn't hear a thing over the sound of the engine. Was even a little difficult to hear the pilot in the front seat over the intercom with the headset on.

Internal and external engine volumes should be tied. As should ground detail range and the range at which you see enemy gv's.

I think you need to be able to turn the engine sounds etc down, for example if you're trying to listen to music (like me) or it you want 2 hear the radio
Wouldn't it be better to group the sound options into pairs: e.g. one set would be 'internal engine sound' and 'external engine sound'. Each of these could be locked, so that turning one down turns the other down...

When your internal engine is on, it severely dampens exterior noises, including enemy engines. This is also true even if you turn your sound slider for internal engine WAAAAY down to zero.
You can show this by turning your internal engine sounds off, and take off in a plane. If you kill your engine with the E key all of a sudden you hear a LOT of things that were almost silent before. The second you start the engine up again, the sounds go away.
Even if your internal sounds are down, you gain no real advantage because the very presence of the sound (regardless of the volume) drowns out others.
P.S. It's not just a rear angle issue. You pass a formation of bombers and you'll hear the dull roar. You merge nose to nose with an enemy plane and you'll hear something.
I don't think it's realistic to expect that these types of planes with these types of engines are going to be undetected by anybody. When I mow my lawn with a gas mower it's very loud, but I can still faintly hear the guy down the street mowing with his gas mower, as well.
IMO making the game not play sounds so that people can sneak up on others is gamey. Your mileage may vary.

You want to hear planes the way they SHOULD sound, doppler, flybys.
Download Tictok's Sound package.
You'll sit in the tower & end of the runway and be amazed.

I just tested this, didn't alter any of my other sounds (all set at 80), just turned off internal, and turned up external. It is very easy to hear an aircraft at 400 yards. It most certainly gives an advantage, Krusty.
