Title: A Case of Mistaken Identity
Post by: Oldman731 on December 07, 2007, 11:16:21 AM
A CASE OF MISTAKEN IDENTITY

On 18 March 1945 Mustangs from the U.S. 359th
FG escorting B-17s deep into Germany encountered
and bounced some Yak9Ms and La-3s mistaken as
109s and 190s.  (An account of the mission appears
in the February, 2008 issue of “Flight Journal.)
As the armies closed in on the dying forces of the
Third Reich, the risk of such encounters became
ever more pronounced.  This week’s setup simulates
the risk of such tragic mistakes - and the potential
for a third world war, already contemplated by
powerful leaders in Moscow and Washington.

Soviets
Yak9U
Yak9T
La-5
A-20
C-47
The M’s
T-34

Americans
P51B
P51D
B-17
C-47
The M’s
Sherman Firefly

Germans
109G6
109G14
109K4
Fw190A5
Fw190A8
Fw190D9
Ju-88
C-47
The M’s
Panzer IV
Tiger I

NOTES

Thanks to Storch for researching and suggesting this
setup.  This may be the first time the arena has hosted
a three-way fight.  Various sectors of the winter Rhine
map have been selected to place opposing bases near each
other.

Some American and German bases also have air
starts enabled to permit simulation of high altitude
deep penetration raids, at altitudes not ordinarily
utilized by Soviet aircraft.  Look for the blue boxes
located near the pertinent air bases.  Each blue box has
one square filled in.  Go to the associated land base
and take off in the direction of the filled-in box.
You will begin high in the sky, by the blue box, with your
gear down and your engine off.  Remember to take care of
those two things promptly.

Finally, please remember that it is not possible to "win
the map" in this arena.  Eliminating all of one country's
bases simply disables the arena until a staff member is
able to reset it.  Consequently we ask that everyone take
care not to over-capture bases - and inform those who may
not have read this message.

ARENA SETTINGS

Killshooter is ON
Visibility is 12.0 miles
Fuel burn rate is 1.0
Ack settings are .25
Base capture: 10 troops (maproom hardness .0015)
Radar (1944-45)
  Sector 369,600
  Tower 237,600

We used to have killshooter off.  Then one night something went wrong with the MAs.  The inhabitants thereof swarmed herein, found out that killshooter was off, and started killing anyone in sight.  People got mad, chairs were thrown, and bartender Skuzzy ultimately had to clear the place with his double-barrel.  We haven't had killshooter off since then.

In practice it really doesn't make a huge difference.  Noticeable, but not huge.

The entire arena was flooded with "so and so landed 45 kills in a field gun" or in a 110G or in a whatever. 100% of the kills were their own team. Oh, P.S. the arena wasn't even that full. There were about 30 folks in there, so it's not as if the entire MA was pouring over. It's just been proven over and over to be a bad idea.

Now back to your regularly scheduled program (thread).

If you want to fly like you're legally blind, feel free to turn your icons off. The pitifully low number of square pixels on your monitor can't come remotely close to what the human eye can see in the real world.

I just looked out the window from the 23rd floor where I work, and can pick out individual compact cars moving on a freeway overpass over a mile away. The semi trucks and busses are clear as day. EDIT: Oh yeah, and it's totally overcast and foggy right now, raining all day and might snow. Imagine if it were a bright, clear day!  If my vision were represented in the field of view AH has on a screen of square pixels, you wouldn't even be able to see them.

The icons are there to make up for the failings in the technology at hand. They simulate depth perception and normal vision.

I believe Hitech has said that maximum zoom in AH is about what you'd have with 20/20 eyesight, but default is zoomed out for peripheral vision.

Wasnt it that night when the MA and backup MAs sever went down and there were like 150-200 people there?

(BTW it was THE worst night in the CT Iv ever had.)

FYI I was on when the event he was referring to happened. The team I was on couldn't even take off because of all the on-runway team killing. It was ugly.

There was just the one base available for one of the countries where this happened repetitiously? If there was one of the staff members available, you should have notified about that. But we've had the killshooter on for a while now, you should drop by and give it a try.

thanks for running this interesting fight and unusal set up for the AvA.

the fights have been fun thus far.  I come away with the impression that the Yak9U is the absolute ruler of this setup.

it's a shame we don't see the Yak9U more often in here.  I'm going to do so Yak9U research along the lines of individual engagements in the eastern front.

Heh.  109K4, 51D and 9U are all beasts, compared to our usual fare!  It's been a lot of fun so far.
