TexasMom...
Dear I'm glad you asked. My nieghbourhood resembles a Warzone. We lost any signs of electricity Sunday around 1:30 pm. The ice hit hard and power was out. Trees all around here are nothing but stumps. The ice, rain and wind did not stop. We had folks trapped in houses who's trees blocked all doors and windows. It's time like this that those who live next to you matter if you live or die. Late at night there were chainsaws going, trees exploding from the cold or just falling from the ice. Sunday we had Thunder and Lightning in the ice storm... It was awesome but I'd rather deal with a tornado.
Cell phone service was out. Phones out last 3 days. It just got colder and colder...doors froze shut.
I have a fireplace in my house. the first day, Sunday we tore up a SWB phone book to get heat and to cook. We lived on what we had in the pantry and in the fridge. A few candles and a watermelon load of blankets.. We camped out infront of the fireplace. I stayed on fireguard all night and after cooking breakfast my wifey took over to let me sleep. Monday and Tuesday got really depressing... yet we managed.
The stores here are out of everything imaginable.. no candles, firewood, batteries, generators. Gas stations are few and far to come by... we found one yesterday. 1 1/2 hours in a line, pay in advance check or cash only.. Police there ensure everyone was being kewl.
They said we were to be without power until the 18th....we just got power back 3 hours ago and thats not to reliable right now. Snow is on the way, temps dropping to lows tonight. Found my chainsaw and 3 hours worth of daylight to cut away the fallen trees infront of the house to clear a path and provide firewood for the days to come.
We survived the first few days... and we'll make it the rest. Just gotta take care of the Neighbors around us.

My prayers are with you Mac. Glad ya'll are Ok.
Pull together... it's the frontier way to survive.
Although there are good people everywhere, in the state I am currently in, elderly people have actually frozen to death on their neighbor's doorstep trying in vain seeking help only to be ignored or feared. They had accidentally locked themselves out of their house.

Glad yer ok Mac.
Times like those make you wish you really had a well stocked emergency kit.

It's the lil things in life we take for granted... until you loose them.
Electicity.
Heat.
Hot Water.
Music.
Television.
My Wifey is just grateful that me and my Son can hit the toilet bowl now... well most of the times.
But all kidding aside... It's people helping each other here that made a difference.
I love where I live. It helps me to believe in People and keep the Faith.

TxMom how did Texas do? Any probs? I haven't seen the news in 3 1/2 Days.
-
Dang Mac....y'all take care up there Brother. :O
I'm not far from the OK/Texas border, myself. I keep thinking it's gonna push south and we might get some of that, but not yet! just a ton of rain the last 2 days. The temps were supposed to rise yesterday, but they didn't get as high as they thought. They dropped again last night and never got above 37 degrees today. So tonight should get chilly, and if it doesn't stop raining we could have an interesting day tomorrow. Last forecast I saw called for Snow here on Saturday.

If it pushes South then do this....
Chop every dam tree down around your house!!! Ifluff'n you can't throw a good sized dog or a dozen cats thru your trees in the front and backyard it needs to come down now...Of course PETA and several Okies Cats and Dawgs will disagree...
The thought of dieing because of a fallen tree blocking a house just upsetted me to no end.
Mac
And look after your Neighbors... It's Christmas time. Help those you can. It may not be much for you, but to bring warm food to a trapped elderly couple means alot to them.

Wow! That sounds terrible. Why don't you guys have underground electrical lines in states that are prone to bad winter weather? Or was this a fluke storm?
-
Lived here 12 Years, never anything this fast and harsh.
Hmmm and I believed in Al Gores Global Warming chit.

Hang in there. That's incredible.
Hard to believe ice storms still do that kind of damage in 21st century USA.
Yes, we all perhaps take vital utilities too much for granted.

Yeppers...
Monday morning I made HoBo Coffee...
Ifluff'n you must ask, HoBo coffee is a few scoups of coffee grounds into a can of water and boiled... then either drink it or run the coffee thru some article of cloth to hold the grinds back.
Wifey asked me what I was gonna strain it thru and I said the back of my underware cuz I don't think yer thongs would stop the coffee grinds.
:p

Man I am beat!
Could barely get out of bed this morning. Slept for 10 hours. Body aches from all the wood cuttin yesterday.
Cleared most of my front yard and an elder couples yard across from us. Max and Mama Jo are a great couple both in their mid 70's. He's a Korean War Vet...Air Force... kinda stubborn, yet level headed.
I'm just getting to dam old now.

We got a little ice but nowhere near as bad, but it still had me stuck at home for 2 days due to living out in the sticks and them not bringing an ice truck out this far.
Must be bad for an old fart like you MAC !!

Ya know xbrit. I'm so glad we pissed each other off Years ago or we'd probably never have been friends.

The ice storm has cut down on my shopping for presents though...

Being without electricity and potentially freezing to death as a result really really sucks.
Glad you are okay.

TxMom how did Texas do? Any probs? I haven't seen the news in 3 1/2 Days.
It'll take more than this to keep you down Mac. You and I are too stubborn to do so.
Glad to hear all is "apparently well", let's just hope you can start the heat now.

The wife and I just put in one of these puppies...
http://www.quadrafire.com/Products/Pellet_Burning/Pellet_Model.asp?f=mtvernon
This is the best piece of equipment ever. Burns corn, wood pellet, sunflower seed and wheat. As quadra fire approves new fuels for it, they send us a flash drive with the program for the fuel, we plug the drive into the thermostat and it programs the stove for that fuel. Then its just a matter of selecting the type of fuel we are going to burn on the thermostat.
Best part is, its a 12 volt system, so in the event of a power outage, I put a deep cycle car battery to it and its fully functional.
It cost us just over $4700 installed (wife HAD to have the top of the line options ) but will pay for itself in about 3 1/2 years.

We're doing well, better than most. We are looking after others here.
I'm just glad to still be as young and not to dependant on others to survive... comes with the German Blood and Red Hair. Not bad for being near 50. LOL
Hmmm a care package?
I miss the cold Winter Days in Germany of shopping with the Wifey and sipping on warm Gluvine.
Or a good Miasels Hefe Weissen.

Are you feeling guilty about something Mac? I was just curious. I thought maybe you had a satellite con or a generator.
You're the one who said power was out for 3 days, and that phone service was out.
It's not like you haven't exaggerated in the past you know.

Respectfully let it go?
Here's what I can add, seeing this thread is turning into a Mac hunt....
I work for Cox Communications in Phoenix. I work in the network operations field with plant design and maintenance. The last two weeks, I have had a 4-man crew in the greater Tulsa area working to re-lash our service lines (Coaxial feeder and Fiber) to new strands connected to new pole. Reason being, about 1000-1200 power poles down in the greater Tulsa area. My guys have been working with Cox crews from New Orleans, Dallas, Omaha, Las Vegas, San Diego and Virginia. They are scheduled to come home tomorrow.
Owasso and Skiatook areas were hit the hardest. There is no Cox services in Skiatook but some of our guys have helped the power Co-ops up there with stringing lines. Depending on where Mac lives in the Owasso area, he stands a very likely chance that his utilities are underground. Most of the Owasso area is newer and the utilities are underground. In these areas, our service came and went with the power. Seeing our plant is powered in order to run our in-line amplifiers, BTD/BTE's and line extenders; we are at the mercy of the power grid. The Owasso area should be powered by the Oologah Power Generating Plant in which there were transmission lines affected here and there from the plant, south, through Collinsville and rural Owasso areas. Those lines also fed much of greater Tulsa. The lines weren't down, per-say, but rather spotty due to the grids being up and down in Tulsa. Mac's area should have been like a blinking light for many days. I looked at some of the network stats on our Polaris tool today and many of the nodes in Owasso were hit and miss for many days. Today shows much of the Tulsa area back up with some spotty node outages in North Tulsa and Mid-town Tulsa.
Mac, glad you guys made it through okay. I'll see ya in January bud.
