I currently have a german shepard mixed with collie, she is starting to get to where she can hardly walk very well. I am looking at getting a small dog, I am hoping it will perk my current dog up and add at least a year to her life span. I have had my current dog for 6-7 years now. I have been looking at the mini daschund, mini schnauzer, possibly a welsh corgi, or a silky terrier. I know that I will be getting one before Christmas ( hopefully)
Any reccomendations would be helpful. :aok
Thanks,
Arian:aok

I have a german shepherd / collie mix too. She's so very awesome.
We're talking about getting a smaller dog after she's gone. We're looking at the taco bell dogs.
-
Anything that's larger than a case of beer.
Otherwise it's only 1/2 a dog.
-
Arian,
Not to sound alarmist but has she been to the vet? Your comment about a middle aged dog having trouble walking got my attention, her being a Sheppard mix also makes me wonder. Another dog in the house may not be the solution.
As for the breeds mentioned, I'd go with the Corgi. Small dogs with large dog dispositions.

TxMOM we love our chihuahua.

We have a mini dachshund and he is great around our kids.
-
How about a 50-50 mix between an Icelandic shepheard and a Border collie ;)
Just got 3 last night. Wonderfully good tempered, playful and robust.
Not so big, just like a Border collie.
BTW, I have sent dogs to the USA ;)
-
NOT fired the first shot!
We love our Nellie! :) She's 1 year 3 months old now:

The perfect dog. :D
Lol Rip. The second picture looks like she's just taken the kid down and is hovering over her prey. ;)

If your dog has a medical problem causing difficulty walking, getting a new dog is not going to fix it. You would be better off addressing the problem by getting her examined by a veterinarian.
-
Get a YORKIE!!!!! :D
-
great thread :aok :)
-
I wouldn't get another. We put our Shepherd/Golden mix down this past year after he got cancer, couldn't control bowel movements, and could barely walk So it was a little late even then. Almost 3 years ago we got a Shepherd puppy and it really ran the older one ragged, noticeable amount of aging when the new dog was introduced due to his energy and want to play all the time.
Best of luck to you though.

Yes I have taken her to the vet, there is nothing we can do for her :cry .
The vet has said that it was a degenerative thing in her hips.

Get a pug. They are good with kids, decent temperment, fairly intelligent and ugly as all get out on 4 legs.
-
Hey Arian, I also would caution against getting a new puppy at this time.
Hip problems with Shepherds are fairly well known. I have a Shepherd cross..."Bone" is his name. He's 12 and a half years old now and is getting pretty stiff and sore in the hips.
He's always been a really great dog and a fantastic buddy. He sleeps alot now and when he gets in the mood to play he's very reserved and careful. He certainly doesn't have the ability to pull very hard or even run anymore, but he has more than earned his keep here, and our loyalty.
I wouldn't even think about bringing an energetic puppy into the house until Bone has pulled the pin. He's earned his golden years without the constant annoyance of a doggy "toddler" pulling on his tail.
Just my humble opionion mind you.
cheers,
RTR

That Dachshund pic reminds me of the time a bald eagle ate my neighbors miniature Dachshund at the top of a big cedar tree in my back yard.
-
I think for sure that I will get a mini schnauzer or a mini daschund.
Oh, I was wondering when mac would get in here.
Arian.

We have a 14 year old Pit/Dobi/Blue healer mix. He weighs about 100 lbs and has had hip problems for the last 4 years. We have had him on 200mg ZUBRIN for 3 years now. It really makes a difference. He can walk but sometimes it is a chore to go out and do his thing.
My dog is getting up there now and this is probably his last winter.

No target, that is not mac, that is the winner of the "Worlds Ugliest dog contest". There were some pretty ugly buggers on there.
-
I have a Yorkie/Chihuahua mix. Smart as hell, and cute. Useless as a guard dog though, his job is helping me get numbers. Hes good at it.

Mac could win that contest . . . easily.

Our little buddy Maximillion Thurston Howell IV aka Max. I thought the long, showdog name was funny.
He's a Jack Russel.

One of the best dogs I ever owned was half catahoula, one-quarter blue heeler, and one-quarter beagle. Try to find something similar. Failing that....breed your own.

About 10-15 pounds. Most of the dachshunds you see these days are miniatures. You don't see a lot of standard doxies anymore.
