If anyone is interested, our "friends" @ Microsoft have released a preliminary version of SP3 for Windows XP. It has had some good reviews, some calling it a "worthy update". Others have even said that it has improved their system's performance. I managed to downloaded and install it several days ago and noticed some immediate improvements all around. Here is a link for those of you who would like to give it a shot. I've had absolutely no issues whatsoever with this update. I've done a complete investigation of this update and it's the real deal, not the assortment of hot-fixes that some have released and claim it to be SP3. As with any significant update to Microsoft products, it'd be wise to back-up anything essential.

Never download MS service packs unless you get them directly from MS itself. Go to microsoft.com if you plan on downloading anything (or use the windows update tool on your computer)
-
There is no SP3. It's a hoax or some kind of trojan/malware.
I just checked the microsoft page and it shows nothing of this supposed "SP3"

It's not out yet, as far as this article is concerned.

Reading the white paper at that link doesn't make it seem like SP3 actually does much... I think I'll wait, even after it's out.
-
Krusty no offense but I think you should google up a bit or do some other research on issues before you recommend action. To much misinformation lately, mate.

Take recommendations from the internet for what its worth. Some person you've never met (for the most part) telling you what to do.

they are coming out with sp3 for xp ... there just waiting to see if they can fix vista 1st ... its all for the $$$ you know .
as for off shore service packs ...sp1.5 for w98 was one of the best ones ever done . so i wouldnt toss out those ... just beshure you test them on a basic general use pc or a spare harddrive ....dont test this stuff on your main pc. this goes for the M$ service packs too .
as mentioned "Do the research"

There is an XP sp3 but it's not yet available to the public. If you are a Technet/MSDN subscriber the release candidate is available now.
-
I installed the SP3 today and so far everything seems pretty normal.
The only visible difference is that now COD4 multiplayer takes about 0.5 seconds to connect to a server where it used to take 5-9 seconds or timeout totally.
Can't be a coincidence because every server has been lighting fast for me today and never before.
-
So many are so quick to scream "MALWARE" or "TROJAN" when they can't corroborate facts about a new release. Krusty, I've done my homework and I'm also a Technet subscriber. So, my fellow subscribers and I have known about this for some time. And there is an "SP3" update out there that really isn't SP3, just a bunch of hotfixes bundled together by somerone, which is NOT malware either. This is the real deal. Don't be so quick to cry "THE SKY IS FALLING" when you haven't comepletely done your homework (well, not entirely). Are you a Technet subscriber? We've had this release for subscribers only for some time. It has just now been released for public use. This is pretty much what service pack 3 will be. Although there are a few more add-ons that will be incorporated, including some elements (mostly visual) from Vista.
Regards

Yes, this has been the case with many who have installed it. I too have seen improvements on many levels. So far, I'm satisfied with it.

It is standard procedure for MS to release this to a specific audience who can fully test it to work out any bugs. Of course Microsoft isn't going to release it to the public. But I can assure you that this IS made by Microsoft and it's a release candidate for SP3.

Well, it's not just some person tell me what to do. I am by no means an amateur when it comes to PCs and I do my homework before I decide to install a major update. There have been many reviews for this update and out of the many that I've read, no one had anything bad to say about it. As I've said before, many people noticed an improvement in their all around performance.
Hey, I just pointed you guys in the direction and told you my experience so far. It's up to you if you want to give it a shot. As far as people I've never met, I am in daily communication with my fellow Technet friends as too how their systems are working out with this update. Believe me, I am not the type of person to throw someone a bone laced with cyanide. I wouldn't just put this out on here for all of you to download if I didn't think it was safe. ;)
-
SP3? I'm rolling back to SP1 sometime this week, SP2 broke to much networking stuff imho.
-
Im going to give it a shot, tweakXP is a pretty trustworth site, ive used many programs and tips off of there before,..
worst case scenario it wipes everything out, piss on it, time for a fresh format anyway.
-
Redgiant, how does it do as far as game play goes? Notice any difference in FPS? Any difference in lag issues?

I've run previous leaked versions of sp3 beta and they were all stable and have run the SP3 released candidate that RedGiant kindly provided the link to. I ran it through the courses and it is pretty solid. I've used it in AH with NO ill effects whatsoever and connects do seem a tad quicker. SP3 was supposed to be released in August of 2007 but it's been pushed back and back as Mickysoft keeps hoping that VistaWare will take off. Talk about wishful thinking... ROFLOL I would only recommend VistaWare to ex-wives and such other miscreants.
All the Best...

You learn something new everyday. Being that you installed i guess what would be called a version, do you think the final will be released to the public anytime soon?
It sounds like it's worth upgrading.

Does SP3 install IE7? If it does there is no way I am getting near that update.
-
I believe MS's overview stated that it did not install IE7 but would update it if already present.
-
I've found that IE7 does relatively little harm to the system as long as you never open it. The box where I installed the SP3 to had already IE7 in so I can't say if its included or not.
-
I haven't tried it, but I did read the links posted. It stated that it will not install MSIE. If you have MSIE 6.x it will update it with patches for that, and if you have MSIE 7.x it will update it, but it doesn't seem to install one or the other (just updates)
-
Why would it matter if it installed IE7? I haven't seen that icon on my screen in a long time. Only thing I can think of is that some programs, depending on the link you click open in IE no matter what your default browser is set to.

Nope, the earlier builds and the Release Candidate did NOT install IE7 on my system.

Thank you.
And the reason is, there is a lot of Vista that goes with IE7. The installation of IE7 effects everything in your computer due to the DLL's MS updates. Even FireFox gets effected.
-
Skuzzy, I backed up my pc and I installed SP3 and no it didn't install IE7. Infact I can't tell a difference with anything.

Thanks again. I appreciate it.

been running SP3 since this post came out..
no noticeable difference good or bad

Hi All,
I loaded up SP3 on my box after reading this thread & I have had no problems at all. What I have noticed is that my DSL connects (networking) are slightly more crisp & noticeably smoother now than before this update.
I wouldn't say the connect speeds improved (ran ping test--saw no change in ms from before SP3 then after SP3 due to the fact that the SP3 install didn't change any settings made prior within the Registry), but I would say that it appears that SP3 does make some improvements as to how my box handles packets received and/or sent, which is a good thing IMHO.
Outside of this, I haven't noticed any other differences-not to say that there aren't any others-I just haven't noticed them.......................ye t.
So far it's been a good ride.
Thanks for the link RedGiant!

Well SP2 did screw up the networking stack pretty badly.

I'm not real computer savy, but I tried this SP3 thing and my 3DMark06 score droped from 10140 to 9837. Guess I'll stick with SP2.

I went back and checked mine. It's still the same at 12698. Are you sure there's no new processes started?

Guys 3DMark is a joke. It tells very little about real world performance and chasing 100 points in the mark serves no purpose other than bragging rights on other users who chase the same said points in an exersize of futility.
Several small alterations in the system can affect the scoring and in the past people have managed to fool the benchmark with several tweaks which do not affect performance but the way the benchmark reads scoring points.
Static benchmarks are nice to see sometimes but you shouldn't put too much emphasis on them.
-
Its a nice little test tool, I dont rank myself against others I set my own benchmark then try and improve upon that which I think is probably the best way to go.
After SP3 I did see an increase in both my 2d and 3d tests compared to my previous benchmark.
For what its worth.

3DMark only tests your performance in games. It ignores file transfer speeds etc. etc. and won't give you a comparison of real world computing (non-video games0
-
No 3dmark only tests your performance in 3dmark nothing else. Real game benchmarks (timedemos) are the only reliable way to test your performance. Hunting benchmark points is futile.
-
I like it !
:aok
